Former UFC heavyweight, Alistair Overeem has tested positive for a banned substance following his bout against Badr Hari.

Overeem made his return to kickboxing last month, taking on former foe and kickboxing legend, Badr Hari. ‘The Demolition Man’ would knockdown Hari twice in the final round of their bout, securing the 42-year-old a unanimous decision win.,

Following the fight, a sample provided by Overeem tested positive for a banned substance, which has been reported to not be performance-enhancing. The results from the B sample are still to be released.

After his match against Badr Hari in October,” Lars Van Soset of De Telegraaf wrote. “The 42-year-old kickboxer handed in a [sample] in which a prohibited substance was found. Various sources have confirmed this to De Telegraaf. Overeem’s management is currently awaiting the results of the b-sample and would not comment further. However, according to them, the substance found is not a performance-enhancing substance.”

This is not the first time that Overeem has been in trouble regarding banned substances, failing a test back in 2012 for elevated testosterone levels. The former Strikeforce champion had T/E levels of 14:1, over twice the allowed limit in competition and around seven times more than the average man.

What’s next for Alistair Overeem?

Overeem seemed the likely candidate to face Glory heavyweight champion Rico Verhoeven, who would enter the ring to confront Overeem. The fight had the potential to be a big event, especially in their home country of the Netherlands, but now the matchup seems unlikely.

No official ban has been passed down Overeem as of yet and neither Glory or athletic commissions have given an indication on the next steps.

Alistair Overeem is not ending his career yet. The former UFC heavyweight has signed a multi-fight contract with Glory Kickboxing.

The UFC released Overeem following his second-round KO defeat at the hands of rising star Alexander Volkov. The move surprised many. Before the loss to Volkov, Overeem, 41, was on a two-fight win streak. He had won four of his last five fights. Dana White explained the decision later, citing Overeem’s age as the main factor. The UFC released Junior Dos Santos in the same week. The moves signaled their intention to continue to grow the division with fresher, younger talent.

Overeem’s impact on the world of Mixed Martial Arts is undeniable. Before challenging for UFC gold, Overeem held belts in Strikeforce and Dream. He also won the K-1 World Grand Prix, one of only two UFC fighters to win the prestigious tournament. Overeem has amassed an impressive 47-19 record over his 20+ year career in the sport. His record includes victories over Brock Lesnar, Frank Mir, and Andre Arlovski (all future HOF contenders). Overeem appeared reinvigorated potentially making one last push at the UFC heavyweight title before his release.

After the release, it was unclear if Overeem would retire. As the news spread through the MMA community, fighters like bellator/” rel=”noreferrer noopener”>Ryan Bader (Bellator’s current heavyweight champion) called for Overeem to join their promotions.

Today, Overeem’s management team confirmed to ESPN that the legend has decided to return to his roots and has signed with Glory Kickboxing. The move makes sense as Overeem found success in the sport (10-4) before transitioning to MMA.

Now that the contract is signed, we will await what’s next. Glory has not confirmed when Overeem will make his debut. We also don’t know who he will be his opponent for his first match.

Chaos erupted during Glory 42, which took place yesterday (June 10, 2017) from the AccorHotels Arena in Paris, France.

The co-main event of the evening featured a welterweight battle between Murthel Groenhart and Harut Grigorian. In the second round, Groenhart dropped Grigorian with a brutal right hand after Grigorian oddly turned his back to Groenhart.

The fight was immediately called off, but that’s when the chaos erupted, as Groenhart, who was celebrating his victory, was attacked by two fans, who jumped into the ring and began striking Groenhart.

Check out a video of the bizarre event courtesy of caposa on Twitter below:

Commentator Todd Grisham also captured footage of the event, but from a different angle.

Speaking on the attack, Groenhart revealed that he may have suffered a broken jaw:

“Some guy caught me with a hook to my face,” Groenhart said on the broadcast. “I got my guard up. With those hands without gloves, it came through to my chin and my teeth. I think it’s broken [jaw], I don’t know. It hurts.”

While admitting that some people tend to get emotionally involved in sports, Groenhart said the way the fans behaved was simply unacceptable:

“I was in the corner and I saw these guys coming out,” Groenhart said of the attackers. “I was like come on guys this is a sport. Things happen. Some people get emotional, too close. But this is a sport and little children are watching this sport at home. You can not come into a ring like this.”

What do you make of this situation?
