The UFC has revealed the main events for two upcoming cards which were announced earlier today.

UFC President Dana White announced UFC 249 would take place at the VyStar Veterans Memorial Arena in Jacksonville, Florida. Two other fight night cards will also take place at the arena on May 13 and on May 16.

Light-heavyweight contender Anthony Smith will square off against Glover Teixeira in the main event on May 13. The pair were originally supposed to fight at UFC Lincoln tomorrow. The card was unfortunately cancelled due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, but they will now be able to get it in just a few weeks’ time.

Smith will be looking to work his way back into title contention after falling short in his 205lb title fight against Jon Jones. Last time out he beat long-time contender Alexander Gustafsson and now has the chance to add another top fighter to his list. Despite being 40-years-old Teixeria is still a force to be reckoned with at light-heavyweight. He is riding a three-fight win streak and will be hoping to earn another title shot himself by taking out one of the divisions best.

Three days later MMA legend Alistair Overeem will headline in another rebooked main event against Walt Harris. The heavyweight duo was due to meet at UFC Portland on April 11. Now the fight will take place in Florida on May 16.

Overeem will be desperate to get back in the win column after falling at the last hurdle against Jairzinho Rozenstruik last time out. Harris is currently riding a two-fight win streak and will want to make it three in a row. He will be returning to the cage for the first time since the death of his stepdaughter Aniah Blanchard last year. (Per MMA Junkie)

Jones Teixeira

If it were up to Glover Teixeira, UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones would be suspended for a year following his latest mishap.

Jones made headlines earlier this month after he was arrested for aggravated DWI among other things in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Although he escaped with a relatively light punishment, given his repeat offenses, there have been calls for the UFC to punish him by potentially suspending him and stripping him of the title.

And although Teixeira — who fought Jones for the title in a losing effort back in 2014 — feels for the champion, he believes the UFC ultimately has to do the right thing and not let him off easy.

“Were it up to me, he’d be out for a year,” Teixeira told Ag Fight (via Bloody Elbow). “I have to look at things from my perspective, he’s already the champion, he’s financially stable. If we remove him, the line moves faster. I don’t root against him outside of the Octagon. Jon Jones f*cked up and it’s not the first time, but it’s complicated. I just hope he learns from that and doesn’t f*ck up anymore. It’s annoying. A friend of mine showed me a video of him crying when he got arrested. That made me sad. Who doesn’t make mistakes?”

“I do enjoy a drink, I’ve had a couple of beers and then went out driving before, but I was not hammered like he was. He had a bottle of tequila and a gun with him. he had to rely on his luck. I don’t know if he’s overconfident, but he has done that many times before. It gives an impression he does that all the time. If I f*cked like that, I would be punished, for sure. The UFC has to do the right thing.”

The former light heavyweight title challenger certainly has a point.

Meanwhile, Teixeira is slowly staking a claim for another title shot with the Brazilian veteran currently on a three-fight winning streak following wins over Karl Roberson, Ion Cutelaba and Nikita Krylov last year.

The UFC announced on Friday that two former light heavyweight title challengers will meet at UFC Lincoln on April 25. Anthony Smith will face Glover Teixeira in the nights main event match-up.

‘Lionheart’ enters the fight off the back of his career best win. The 31-year-old scored a fourth-round submission victory over Alexander Gustafsson in June 2019. Before that he fell short against light heavyweight great Jon Jones, to snap an impressive win streak. Smith finished Rashad Evans, ‘Shogun’ Rua and Volkan Oezdemir on route to his first ever title shot. He’ll now look to earn his second by continuing his hot streak against Teixeira.

Since his title shot
in 2014, the 40-year-old has struggled for form. The Brazilian has lost four of
his last 12 fights. However as of late he has been impressive. Teixeira has won
his last three fights beating Karl Roberson, Ion Cutelaba and Nikita Krylov. He
now faces a serious step up in competition against Smith, who would be one of
the biggest wins of his career.

Also announced for the event, Antonina
Shevchenko meets Cynthia Calvillo in a flyweight bout. Evan Dunham
ends his brief retirement to face off agasint the always entertaining Michael
Johnson at 155lbs. Andrew Sanchez squares off against Zak Cummings at middleweight
and Anthony Rocco Martin meets David Zawada at welterweight.

UFC Lincoln represents the promotions second event in the city, after hosting a fight night in August 2018. The card was headlined by a fight between lightweight contenders Justin Gaethje and James Vick. The UFC Lincoln main card will air on the ESPN+ streaming service.
