NFL Legend Sparks UFC GOAT Discussion With Jon Jones and Kitchen Appliances

NFL Hall of Famer Shannon Sharpe is closing the debate on Jon Jones‘ GOAT status.

On Saturday night, undisputed UFC heavyweight champion Jon Jones returned to the Octagon nearly two years after his title-winning performance against Ciryl Gane at UFC 285. This time around, ‘Bones’ was tasked with taking out consensus heavyweight GOAT Stipe Miocic as the two combat sports titans headed up a loaded UFC 309 card in Madison Square Garden.

Jon Jones

Though it took Jones a little longer to dispatch Miocic than it did Gane, ‘Bones’ was nothing short of dominant in their heavyweight headliner, finishing the two-time titleholder in the third round with a vicious spinning back kick to the body.

Not long after ‘Bones’ handed his title belt to President-elect Donald Trump who was sitting cageside for the main card, Sharpe called for an official end to the great GOAT debate on social media.

Jon Jones

“The GOAT UFC fighter is JON ‘BONES’ JONES,” Sharpe wrote on X. “The pound 4 pound best fighter is also JON ‘BONES’ JONES. Please no more questions about who it is. It’s him and it’s not close. Go debate with your kitchen appliances.”

After UFC 309, is Jon Jones’ GOAT Status undeniable?

With a 28-1 record, two world title reigns, and wins over some of the biggest names in mixed martial arts history, it’s hard to argue against Jon Jones being the greatest fighter of all time.

Of course, there will always be those who discredit Jones’ work inside the Octagon by pointing at his shenanigans outside of it, but even Jones’ biggest of haters are going to have a hard time denying the label that Sharpe and many others have given him.

After his decisive victory over Stipe Miocic in New York City, is Jon Jones the undisputed GOAT of MMA?

Alex Pereira Backs Dana White’s Claim, Declares Jon Jones the MMA GOAT

Alex Pereira thinks Jon Jones is MMA’s undisputed GOAT.

This Saturday (October 5), ‘Poatan’ will return to the Octagon for his third defense of the light heavyweight title in 2024. Meeting him in the UFC 307 headliner will be heavy-hitting contender Khalil Rountree who looks to shock the world and stop Pereira’s destructive reign atop the 205-pound division.

Alex Pereira

In just a few short years, the ‘Brazilian Boogeyman’ has entered the GOAT debate with wins over a slew of former world champions, including Sean Strickland, Israel Adesanya, Jan Blachowicz, Jamahal Hill, and Jiri Prochazka on two separate occasions. However, ‘Poatan’ isn’t ready to dub himself the greatest of all time.

Instead, he leans toward the side of White who has unapologetically hailed Jon Jones as the undisputed GOAT of mixed martial arts over the last several months.

“Right now being active, Jon Jones [is the MMA GOAT],” Pereira told Helen Yee. Like Dana White says, he’s the man.”

Does Jon Jones’ Antics Outside the Octagon exempt him from GOAT Status?

Jon Jones’ resume as a (mostly) unbeaten fighter with title reigns in multiple divisions undoubtedly puts him in the GOAT conversation whenever it comes up, but those who deny him the designation often point to his long stretches of inactivity, his failed drug tests, or his slew of run-ins with the law.

Daniel Cormier recently suggested that while ‘Bones’ is a great fighter and one of the biggest draws in the game today, he shouldn’t have a spot reserved on the Mount Rushmore of MMA because of his antics outside the Octagon. Of course, ‘DC’ still has plenty of beef with ‘Bones’ stemming from their days fight over the light heavyweight title, but he makes a reasonable point nonetheless.

Octagon icon Georges St-Pierre dubs Jon Jones modern-day GOAT of MMA: 'It's hard to find someone better'

When it comes to modern-day mixed martial arts, UFC Hall of Famer Georges St-Pierre believes Jon Jones is the greatest.

Debating who belongs at the top of MMA’s pound-for-pound list has never been GSP’s forte. ‘Rush’ insists that the world’s greatest combat sports athlete likely hasn’t even been born yet, but when picking from today’s crop of MMA icons, St-Pierre is adamant that there is no one who does it better than the UFC’s undisputed heavyweight world champion.

Jon Jones

“In terms of where we are now, I think it’s hard to find someone better than Jon Jones,” St-Pierre told Henry Cejudo and Kamaru Usman on the Pound 4 Pound podcast. “Jon Jones is so good. Jon Jones is extremely talented, but he’s also extremely tough. People have no idea how tough he is. I’ve trained with him, I’ve seen him going through the grind. He’s so freaking tough. I remember the fight that he had with Vitor Belfort, I think his arm got dislocated, and he fought even with a dislocated arm. Even one of his fights, his toe was broken.

“Most of the time when you have a guy that is very talented, it doesn’t come with toughness. Jon Jones is the full package. He’s got everything. Elite striker, elite grappler, [and] he’s good everywhere. Of course, there’s things that people will say, ‘He did this, he did that,’ but in terms of who’s the best, he came back, beat Ciryl Gane the way he did. It’s hard to have an argument.”

Jon Jones’ meteoric rise to the top

Since making his MMA debut in 2008, Jon Jones is essentially undefeated with his lone loss coming against Matt Hamill after being disqualified for illegal elbows. Winning the light heavyweight title at UFC 128, ‘Bones’ defended the belt against a crop of MMA legends, including Quinton ‘Rampage’ Jackson, Lyoto Machida, Vitor Belfort, Chael Sonnen, and Alexander Gustafsson. After amassing 11 defenses over two separate reigns, Jones vacated the title in 2020 and announced his inevitable transition to heavyweight.

Fans would have to wait more than three years to see Jones step back inside the Octagon, returning at UFC 285 to challenge Ciryl Gane for the vacant heavyweight strap. It only took ‘Bones’ 124 seconds to submit ‘Bon Gamin’ to add another world title to his collection.

Jon Jones vs. Ciryl Gane

Jones was scheduled to defend his title against Stipe Miocic in November, but after suffering a pectoral tear weeks ahead of fight night, ‘Bones’ was forced to bow out of the bout. No official announcement has been made regarding his return, but UFC CEO Dana White is holding out hope that Jones vs. Miocic will go down sometime this summer.

Jon Jones GOAT drug tests UFC 285 coach

Tristar MMA head coach, Firas Zahabi has disputed the consensus call of Jon Jones as the greatest mixed martial arts fighter of all time off the back of his UFC 285 heavyweight title victory earlier this month – pointing to the Endicott native’s prior failed drug tests.

Jones, a former two-time light heavyweight champion to boot, headlined UFC 285 last weekend in Las Vegas, Nevada – clinching the vacant heavyweight title with a dominant, first round guillotine choke submission win over former interim gold holder, Ciryl Gane

Locking his hands round the waist of Gane in the early goings of their main event clash, Jon Jones dragged the Frenchman to the ground – before scooting his way to the Octagon fence.

Fighting hands for some time, Jon Jones locked up a guillotine choke on Gane – forcing a rather timely tap on the MMA Factory Paris staple, minting himself as the heavyweight champion.

And off the back of his victory, Jones has been touted as both too much for former undisputed titleholder, Francis Ngannou – and former two-time titleholder, Stipe Miocic by Zahabi – with the latter expected to return fight Jones at UFC 290 in July.

“Jon (Jones) with one ab, beat Ciryl Gane – easy,” Firas Zahabi said on his YouTube channel. “And if they restarted that fight, I would pick Jon. If they restarted that fight 10 times, I would pick Jon. I think he’s levels above [everyone else].”

“And if he fights (Francis) Ngannou – call me crazy if you like, but he’s going to beat Ngannou,” Firas Zahabi explained. “Not that he’s going to fight Ngannou – I don’t think that fight’s going to happen. But he beats Ngannou. And if he fights (Stipe) Miocic, I’m telling you guys now – I haven’t done a pre-fight analysis [yet] – he’ll beat Miocic. He’ll beat him.”

Firas Zahabi disputes Jon Jones’ status as the GOAT

However, Jones, who had tested positive for a turinabol metabolite following an eventual official ‘No Contest’ against Daniel Cormier in 2017, has been ruled out of the GOAT debate by Zahabi – who claims he should have been slapped with a lifetime suspension from MMA.

“Jon Jones calls himself the GOAT,” Firas Zahabi said on his YouTube channel. “I hate to say it, he’s not the GOAT. You can’t fail drug tests and be the GOAT. If you guys ask me, can i put my vote in the hat? If you get caught on a banned substance – okay not weed or like they have some weird things on there – if you get caught with a hormone, I cthink you should be banned for life. It’s irreversible by the way, the University of Toronto they have a study on hormones and PEDs, and the effects are irreversible.”
