Frankie Edgar and Gray Maynard will meet at UFC 131 on May 28. The fight will mark the third time that these two competitors have met. It will be the second time they will do battle for Edgar’s UFC lightweight title.

The first time the two fought, in 2008, Maynard (10-0-1-1) handed Edgar (13-1-1) his first and still only loss of his career, taking the fight by unanimous decision. The two had a rematch on January 1, 2011 to fight for the title that Edgar captured from BJ Penn. The rematch ended with a majority draw and Edgar retained his title.

In the first round of the rematch, Maynard dropped Edgar, “I’m thinking this is done, I’ve reached my goal,” Maynard said. However, he could not finish the champion. The final score cards read 48-46, 46-48, 47-47 for the draw.

One thing will be certain going into the title-fight rematch: These two will not be looking to let this fight go to the judges’ scorecards.

UFC 130 is only a few weeks away, but already the card is shaping up to be one of the most solid nights of fights in recent history–only another great card to add on to what the UFC has already put on in 2011.

On the Spike TV card, which also features Rick Story facing Thiago Alves, Miguel Angel Torres will look to extend his streak in the UFC to 2-0 at Demetrious Johnson, who has a great Wrestling base and has been known to be very explosive when he lays in some shots.

Torres is a former WEC Bantamweight Champion with great striking, long limbs, and some very good Jiu-Jitsu, but without question Johnson poses one of the toughest threats to date for Torres.

So what does he have to do to beat Mighty Mouse?

Gray Maynard Says Pettis Has Fought Scrubs, Hasn’t Proved Himself

Number one Welterweight title-shot contender, Gray Maynard pretty much told MMAFA he’s not all that impressed with Mr. “Showtime Kick,” Anthony Pettis. In the interview, Maynard sums up his opinion of Pettis by saying:

Number one Welterweight title-shot contender, Gray Maynard pretty much told MMAFA he’s not all that impressed with Mr. “Showtime Kick,” Anthony Pettis. In the interview, Maynard sums up his opinion of Pettis by saying:

“I mean, who has he fought? I’ve been in the trenches this whole time fighting the toughest guys. He throws one kick and then he’s the greatest in the world? Let’s look at who he’s fought. Ben Henderson is the best name. And I don’t mind fighting him; I don’t care if I win the belt and then I have to take him on. But for me, guys like Miller, Melendez and all of these guys who have been on the f***ing grind, fighting the best competition for the past few years… that’s what I look at. Who have you fought? I don’t care about how good you looked when you fought a scrub. That doesn’t matter. If a guy isn’t good then you’re not supposed to look good. And for me, [Pettis] has fought one good guy in Ben, and he isn’t proven yet. He’s tough as hell, but we’ll see.”

Um… Maynard… has… a… point? But to Pettis’ credit, he’s also finished 3 of his last four fights, and all things considered, the Ben Henderson victory could be looked at as a TKO. Maynard, though extremely deserving of his UFC 130 rubber match, hasn’t finished anyone since a KO over Joe Veres in 2007. *Note: that KO did come in the first 9 seconds of the first round.

Both fighters have earned our respect and we can’t wait to see Maynard vs. Edgar 3 or that Anthony Pettis vs. Clay Guida upcoming June 4th spectacle.

They say that three times is a charm, although I’m not exactly sure who “they” are…

Perhaps they are gypsies? Or fortune tellers? Or Bas Rutten in the flesh?

I don’t really know, but I do know that the current UFC Lightweight Champion, Frankie “the Answer” Edgar, had better hope that luck is on his side on the 28th of May, when he is set to face-off for the third time in his professional MMA career (second time consecutively) against his old nemesis, Gray “the Bully” Maynard, at UFC 130 in Las Vegas.

After two previous meetings, it is apparent that Maynard holds the advantage against Edgar, despite fighting to what was a very exciting draw at UFC 125. The first encounter between these two warriors was approximately three years ago at UFC Fight Night: Florian vs. Lauzon, which saw Maynard win via unanimous decision (hence the edge).

Edgar has yet to redeem that loss, and like any competitive athlete, I would have to think that it weighs heavily on his mind from time to time (yeah…that’s an understatement).

If Edgar plans to retain his belt for a third successive title defense, he had better hope for a better game plan than simply surviving the first round. As impressive as Edgar was for weathering the storm, I wouldn’t think that he would be so lucky a second time around.

If he finds himself in trouble again like the last time, I don’t see this fight going the full distance—a rarity for both fighters.
