Gus Johnson, the lead mixed martial arts play-by-play man for CBS who has called many of the most-watched fights in the sport’s history, is reportedly leaving the network.

Richard Deitsch of Sports Illustrated reports that Johnson, who’s best known for calling college football and the NFL, is leaving after failing to come to terms on a new contract with the network. UPDATE: The New York Daily News reports that while Johnson’s contract with CBS has expired, it’s still possible he could reach a new deal.

It’s not clear whether Johnson is also out at Showtime, where he has been both a boxing and MMA play-by-play voice. Johnson will still be part of Saturday night’s Manny Pacquiao vs. Shane Mosley pay-per-view broadcast, but it seems unlikely that Johnson would stick around at Showtime, which a division of the CBS Corporation, for long.

From the ‘Why Couldn’t This Have Happened a Year Ago’ File: Gus Johnson Leaves CBS for Fox

According to a Sports Illustrated report, MMA’s most maligned play-by-play commentator Gus Johnson is leaving CBS to work for Fox.

Not sure if this has anything to do with the fact that the UFC bought Strikeforce and UFC president Dana White has made no secret of the fact that he doesn’t care for Johnson’s fight calling abilities and as such it seemed unlikely that GuJo would be included in their vision of business as usual .

Maybe this is a sign that CBS may be revisiting its relationship with Strikeforce under the new Zuffa regime, or maybe its nothing one has noting to do with the other, but at least there’s hope now that the lipstick-sporting, reporter-calling, Renzo Gracie blue belt has left the network, that if they can come to terms, we won’t ever have to hear Gus proclaiming things like Seth Petruzelli beating Kimbo Slice is the greatest upset in MMA history on network television.

Johnson’s last gig with the network will be his calling of the Showtime pay-per-view broadcast of the Manny Pacquiao-Shane Mosley bout, but after that fans may never see his make-up aden mug during another MMA broadcast.

Showtime Hits With UFC-Strikeforce Purchase, Misses With In-Cage Action

Gegard Mousasi and Keith Jardine battled to a draw at Diaz vs. Daley.Saturday night’s Strikeforce: Diaz vs. Daley card was the first major event on Showtime since the UFC purchased Strikeforce, and it was a good opportunity to see how Showtime would handle its MMA broadcasts now that the premium cable channel is in business with a promotion that had previously been a rival.

Overall, I thought Showtime did a solid job of handling the UFC’s purchase of Strikeforce. But once it was time for the fighters to step into the cage, the coverage of Saturday night’s biggest controversy — the Gegard Mousasi vs. Keith Jardine draw — left something to be desired.

Let’s start with the good: Showtime handled the UFC’s purchase of Strikeforce appropriately by tackling it at the outset. It’s a major story that deserved the upfront treatment it got.

Strange Twist in Strikeforce Heavyweight Grand Prix Format: Overeem’s Belt Will NOT Be Up For Grabs During the Tournament

(The winner of the tournament will take home a case of Rockstar Energy Drink and one of each item from the summer collection of Gus Johnson’s new clothing line.)

Scott Coker made a somewhat surprising announcement today during the promotion’s conference call ahead of its heavyweight grand prix that left a few on the call scratching their heads.

According to the Strikeforce president, the first round bouts of the tournament will consist of three rounds, meaning that the Overeem-Werdum bout will not be a title fight. In fact, Coker went on to explain that only the tournament final will be five rounds, but even if Alistair is one of the contestants of that match, it will be a non-title affair.

Coker, who didn’t say what the prize for winning the tournament would be, blamed the change in the planned format on the various host city commissions who he says refused to sanction five-round non-title bouts. According to Coker, "It wouldn’t have been fair to make some of the guys fight five rounds and the others only fight three," which is why they decided to put the belt on the shelf until the tournament is over.

If you aren’t on the cusp of sports fashion like we are, you probably haven’t heard the news that Strikeforce commentator Gus Johnson has recently started his own clothing line, called "Rise and Fire," after the football and basketball play-by-play man’s oft-used signature catchphrase.

In the video above, GuJo talks about why he started the company and his aspirations to make Rise and Fire the next FuBu or Roca Wear.

Somehow, with designs like this one that looks like it was lifted from a Santa Cruz skateboard, we have our doubts.

Since Gus is our homie who sometimes calls us late at night to discuss his work problems, we thought we’d offer him a few design suggestions that would appeal to the MMA crowd.

Check them out after the jump.

Strikeforce fighter Jason Mayhem Miller thinks CBS announcer Gus Johnson is an “idiot” for his comments at the end of the April Strikeforce show, and UFC announcer Joe Rogan agrees with that assessment.

In a wide-ranging discussion on Rogan’s UStream show, Miller and Rogan expressed their agreement with what many MMA fans said immediately following the CBS broadcast: Johnson made a bad situation even worse by describing the brawl following the main event as the kind of thing that just sometimes happens in MMA.

Miller, who provoked the brawl that broke out in the cage by confronting Jake Shields following his victory in the main event, said that as he was being hit by Shields’ entourage, “The freaking idiot Gus Johnson goes, ‘Gentlemen, this is national television.’ I’m like, ‘Ha ha, no s**t’.”
