Former pro wrestling star Bobby Lashley stepped back into the mixed martial arts cage Friday night for the Titan Fighting promotion, and the good news is he won.

The bad news is that he showed that he’s still the one-dimensional fighter with absolutely no cardiovascular endurance that he’s always been.

“It was not as good as I wanted,” Lashley said afterward. “But it was a victory.”

One of the longstanding goals of the UFC is to implement the unified rules of mixed martial arts, as sanctioned by the athletic commissions in North America, everywhere that MMA takes place. That’s why the UFC uses the unified rules even in places where there is no sanctioning body, it’s why the UFC imposed the unified rules on Strikeforce and it’s why the UFC didn’t adopt any of the old Pride rules when it purchased Pride.

Implementing one set of rules everywhere is a worthy goal and a positive step toward mainstream acceptance of MMA around the world. But while the UFC is set in its ways of using the unified rules, some folks in MMA think the unified rules should look a little more like the rules used in Pride.

That includes Wanderlei Silva, who fought most of his career using Pride or Brazilian vale tudo rules but has spent the last three years in the UFC. Michael Schiavello asks the “Axe Murderer” on the upcoming HDNet show The Voice vs. Wanderlei Silva which rules from Pride he’d like to see in the UFC, and Silva said he’d love to be able to use knees to the head on the ground inside the Octagon.

Bobby Lashley, the former WWE wrestler who dabbles in mixed martial arts, will step into the cage again next week for the first time since suffering the first loss of his MMA career in a Strikeforce fight last year. And in case there’s any doubt that Lashley’s promoters, Titan Fighting Championship, are setting Lashley up for an easy win, here’s what you need to know about Lashley’s opponent: He’s a middleweight with an 8-7 professional record.

Lashley’s opponent was originally supposed to be a guy named James Jack, but Jack has dropped out of the fight and been replaced by a guy named John Ott. In his last fight, a unanimous decision victory over Brian Imes at Bellator 26, Ott weighed in at 184.75 pounds.

Yes, that’s right: Lashley, who’s 246 pounds of chiseled muscle, is going to fight a guy who’s been fighting 185 pounders, and losing to them almost as often as beating them.

Danillo Villefort won in the main event at Shark Fights 14 Friday, but it was Tara LaRosa who put on the night’s best performance.

Villefort took a one-sided unanimous decision over Matt Horwich, winning 30-27 on all three judges’ scorecards. It was a fine showing for Villefort, who improved his record to 13-3 and has now won four straight fights since losing his first and only UFC bout. But it wasn’t particularly exciting, and it left a lot of the fans in Lubbock, Texas.

The fans were thrilled, however, by the way LaRosa won.
