Two-weight champion Henry Cejudo is open to moving up further and even believes he could defeat Conor McGregor in a featherweight fight.

Cejudo won the vacant bantamweight title after getting a TKO finish over Marlon Moraes at UFC 239 last month. He has since called out Frankie Edgar in an attempt to win more gold, especially if the latter were to defeat Max Holloway for the featherweight title at UFC 240 on Saturday night.

However, another fight which would certainly entice “The Messenger” would be McGregor, who was the former featherweight champion. A Twitter user recently posed the question as to whether Cejudo would be able to defeat McGregor in a 145-pound contest.

Cejudo actually replied to the tweet last week, but his response is now gaining coverage:

It’s not the first time the two have interacted. When Demetrious Johnson was traded to ONE Championship last year, Cejudo responded in a now-deleted tweet to McGregor’s jibes about the flyweight division:

“Don’t worry about the flyweight division Conor,” Cejudo wrote. “You should worry about your wrestling and grappling skills and your spirit!”

Most recently, McGregor congratulated Cejudo on matching his accomplishment of being a simultaneous two-weight champion. In all honesty, however, a fight between the two is highly unlikely.

Regardless, do you think Cejudo has any chance against the much bigger McGregor *if* they were to fight?

A pivotal flyweight fight between Alexandre Pantoja vs. Deiveison Figueiredo is going down at UFC 240. With champion, Henry Cejudo out, both have said a win here gets them an interim title shot. Whether or not that happens, is to be seen.

“If I win this fight, I want Benavidez,” Pantoja told MMA Junkie. “I think if Benavidez wants to fight Cejudo, he needs to fight me first. I want to fight Cejudo now. I think it’s a great opportunity to fight an Olympic gold medalist and a guy that has two belts.”

Although Pantoja is calling for an interim flyweight title fight, he is not looking past Figueiredo. He knows he is a tough opponent and has only lost once in his career. With that, he is viewing this fight as a title fight.

“Deiveison is a tough opponent,” Pantoja said. “He’s a very dangerous guy. He’s like a Brazilian warrior, like an old-school fighter. I’ve been training all my life for this fight.

“I think all the fights are for the belt because you need step after step to win. If I win this fight, I think I need to fight Benavidez for the interim belt and wait for Cejudo to come back.”

With Cejudo out until 2020, and him being the flyweight and bantamweight champion, Pantoja wants to fight Joseph Benavidez should he win here. There, the two would fight for the interim title and the winner would fight “Triple C” when he is healthy.

“Cejudo is a good friend, I love this guy,” Pantoja said. “I learned a lot from Cejudo – not just game, but mentality. I have this fight on Saturday, and I need to prove that I’m ready for Benavidez.

“All respect to Benavidez, but I’m feeling ready for the title, and I need to fight Benavidez.”

Do you think flyweight needs an interim title fight with Henry Cejudo out?

Frankie Edgar has a 145-pound title opportunity in front of him. With that being said, he’s not at all focused on the trash talk of 125 and 135-pound champion Henry Cejudo.

“Triple C” recently suggested he’d like to jump up to 145 pounds and challenge for the division’s title. His ideal matchup for the strap would be against Frankie Edgar, as he mentioned in a recent interview.

Speaking to MMA Fighting, Edgar called all of Cejudo’s talk “garbage,” and noted he’s fully focused at the task at hand ahead of him this weekend (Sat. July 27, 2019) – Max Holloway:

“That dude says a lot of s—t. Most of it’s garbage so you’ve got to kind of take it with a grain of salt,” Edgar said. “Who knows what he’s talking. My focus is nowhere near a 35-pounder right now. I’m not looking to fight the smaller guy. I’m looking to fight the best guy and that’s Max right now.”

Edgar and Holloway will main event the UFC 240 pay-per-view (PPV) from the Rogers Place in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. It will be “Blessed’s” first title defense back at 145 pounds after a failed attempt to capture 155-pound gold earlier this year.

What do you think about Edgar disregarding Cejudo’s desire to fight him for the 145-pound title?
