Perhaps no one has been more vocal about the future of the flyweight division than the man who has been competing in it since its inception, current #2 contender Joseph Benavidez.

Thus, with there still being no official word on the future of the division, Benavidez took to Instagram with the hopes of forming an unlikely ally to band together to help save the flyweight division: former opponent and current flyweight champion Henry Cejudo.

No matter what was said between us before this battle I gained so much respect for Henry after our fight! Watching his performances and seeing what he’s done for this division (the one that I’ve been fighting for since it’s beginning) I have only gained more respect! Henry – other weight classes will be there but ours is still not certain. We have the power now more then ever to keep it moving forward and bring the respect it/we deserve! We represented for the flyweights that whole TUF season and delivered in our fight! (One of the hardest of my life and I know you feel the same) and we also did that on Saturday in Brooklyn! I want that belt, I was the first person to ever fight for that belt and I know the competitor in you wants to try to avenge the loss to me on your record! But like you said it is bigger then us … if you believe that to be true then this is the only option to keep this division moving forward, for all the current contenders, up and comers and the thousands dreaming right now of becoming the UFC Flyweight Champion. @henry_cejudo

“We have the power now more then ever to keep it moving forward and bring the respect it/we deserve!” Benavidez wrote. “We represented for the flyweights that whole TUF season and delivered in our fight! (One of the hardest of my life and I know you feel the same) and we also did that on Saturday in Brooklyn! I want that belt, I was the first person to ever fight for that belt and I know the competitor in you wants to try to avenge the loss to me on your record!”

At UFC Brooklyn, both Joseph Benavidez and Henry Cejudo were victorious. Joseph Benavidez earned a unanimous decision victory over Dustin Ortiz and Henry Cejudo logged his first flyweight title defense. Now, if the division is to continue, there is only one natural progression, Benavidez argues.

“But like you said it is bigger then us … if you believe that to be true then this is the only option to keep this division moving forward, for all the current contenders, up and comers and the thousands dreaming right now of becoming the UFC Flyweight Champion. @henry_cejudo

In their first bout 13 months ago, Joseph Benavidez got the better of Henry Cejudo in a razor-close split decision in a fight where Henry Cejudo found himself deducted one point in the first round for consecutive low blows.

Henry Cejudo was able to avenge his other loss to Demetrious Johnson last year by becoming the second UFC flyweight champion of all time, and Benavidez is dangling the idea of avenging his other loss in front of his face for the larger good of keeping the flyweight division moving and therefore alive.

Do you believe Henry Cejudo will face Joseph Benavidez next? Or will it be T.J. Dillashaw in a rematch from UFC Brooklyn?

T.J. Dillashaw’s manager believes the whole UFC Brooklyn situation is ‘unfortunate’

But he is adamant that the two champions need to run is back no matter the weight class. Tiki Ghosn, Dillashaw’s manager, doesn’t care whether the rematch takes place at flyweight or if it’s at bantamweight. Bottom line, he just wants the two to run it back.

“I think it definitely needs to be run back,” Ghosn told MMAjunkie Radio this week. “It needs to be run back at whatever weight – it just needs to happen again.”

An Unfortunate Situation

Henry Cejudo stifled Dillashaw’s bid to become the UFC’s fourth “champ-champ” when he lit up the bantamweight champ with strikes in the first round of their main event title fight last weekend. While some fans don’t have a problem with the 32-second stoppage, others, including UFC President Dana White, think referee Kevin MacDonald was premature with his stoppage.

“The whole thing is unfortunate – it sucks – and that’s not to take anything away from Cejudo,” Ghosn said. “Being a fighter, I know what these guys go through. I know they’re both prepared and trained their asses off for it. And if it was the flipside, too, and it was the other way around, it would suck. The whole thing’s unfortunate.

“As a fighter, you want to go until you can’t possibly go anymore. If it was one of those situations where he was knocked out cold, laying on the floor, there wouldn’t be any controversy. The controversial part of this is that they were still in the scramble. Yes, T.J. was in bad position and he had an Olympic wrestler on top of him. But this is MMA and T.J. scrambled out of some bad situations like that. Like when he fought Cody (Garbrandt the first time). He came back and finished him.”

Save Flyweight?

While Ghosn is careful to not discredit Cejudo, he is quick to point out that any theories of Dillashaw’s weight cut affecting his chin are not true. He just believes Cejudo landed right on the button. As far as the rematch goes, Ghosn thinks 125 pounds makes the most sense, but at the end of the day, Cejudo is holding all the cards.

“Here’s the question, and here’s the challenge: If Henry wants to save the 125 division, then I think the rematch needs to happen at 125,” Ghosn said. “You could say (he already saved the division), except for the controversial stoppage.

“There are two ways to look at it: Did Henry Cejudo earn his chance to become a double champ? Yeah, I think he did. But it just comes down to what (Cejudo) wants to do moving forward. What are they going to do with the 125-pound division? That’s the catch.”

UFC President Dana White and reigning flyweight champion Henry Cejudo have two very different takes on the ESPN+ 1 stoppage.

Cejudo did more than just beat T.J. Dillashaw to retain his 125-pound strap in last weekend’s UFC on ESPN+ 1 main event. He announced to the MMA universe that he is a legit pound-for-pound threat, and he perhaps saved an entire division (at least for the time being).

His win, however, was not without controversy. Immediately after Cejudo KO’ed Dillashaw, the bantamweight king flew into protest mode over what he thought was clearly an early stoppage.

Uncle Dana’s Take

Dana White agreed with his bantamweight champion’s assessment.

“I thought it was an early stoppage, too. You’ve got two of the best guys in the world, two world champions in a super fight. Let them fight. Let them finish. I’m not taking anything away from Cejudo cause the fight went 20 seconds and Cejudo busted him up. I’m sure when you saw him sitting here, he looks like was in a three-round fight but Jesus Christ, let them fight. Horrible stoppage.”

As you might imagin, when Cejudo got his chance to speak at the post fighter press conference he didn’t see eye to eye with the boss.

“It was a great stoppage. I felt his body go limp. I went in at 146 pounds when I fought him, strong. Every blow that he took, he was eating some hammers. Personally, I thought it was a good stoppage because he was going to take another 10, 20 hits.

“Your body goes limp like that, you cut weight like that, thinking you’re going to go out there and take my belt from me, that’s not the way it works. I think it was a great stoppage. If I was to talk to that ref, you’re OK, we were both in there. We saw him go limp a few times. Watch it again. You’ll see it.”

We’ll never know if Dillashaw would have been able to weather the storm. We may find out, however, if he fares better in a rematch – either at flyweight or back up at bantamweight.
