Ex-UFC champion believes Conor McGregor's UFC 303 withdrawal 'is actually a really good sign'

Henry Cejudo is looking at the bright side of Conor McGregor’s withdrawal from UFC 303.

After nearly three years on the shelf, the Irish megastar was scheduled to make his long-awaited return to the Octagon on June 29 for a five-round welterweight clash with former Bellator champion ‘Iron’ Michael Chandler. Sadly, that is no longer the case after McGregor reportedly sustained an undisclosed injury, forcing him to bow out of the bout.

Conor McGregor

UFC fans were understandably disappointed by the news, but ‘Triple C’ believes there is a silver lining to the otherwise unfortunate turn of events.

“Let me put it to you this way Kamaru, the fact that Conor McGregor has to pull out is actually a really good sign… Now what do I mean by that is he’s probably killing a little bit of his ego and now he’s taking it a lot more seriously than ever,” Cejudo said on his Pound-4-Pound podcast with Kamaru Usman.

It’s also an experience for him, so the way that I’m taking it too is that they’re going to fight, but he’s at that point where ‘I want to make sure I’m 100%, like this comeback to me is [finally] real.’”

Kamaru Usman can’t help but agree with Henry Cejudo’s hot take about Conor McGregor

Usman echoed a similar sentiment in response, telling Cejudo:

“There’s no such thing as 100%, as fighters we always go in there with bumps and bruises but obviously, you’re right.

“It’s significant enough for Conor McGregor to say ‘You know what, I want to put out the best possible product out there for all the fans who have been waiting for my return, I want to put out the best me that I can – so I have to push this back because I am not able to give that right now.

“For him to say ‘Imma sit for a little bit, I’m going to push this back, and just prepare myself a little bit more’; it does say a lot, I agree with you.”

Not long after Cejudo and Usman offered their unique take on the situation, McGregor broke his silence, releasing a statement regarding his withdrawal.

Though no details about the injury itself have been revealed, reports suggest that it was minor enough for the UFC to start looking at dates in either August or September to reschedule the scrap.

Instead of McGregor vs. Chandler, UFC 303 will be headlined by a light heavyweight championship rematch as current titleholder Alex Pereira put his gold on the line against Jiri Prochazka in a sequel to their November 2023 showdown. Both men took the fight on just 16 days’ notice with ‘Poatan’ recently offering fans a chance to see the exact moment he was asked to step in and save the day.

Aljamain Sterling still fuming about being coerced into O'Malley fight at UFC 292: 'I succumbed to the pressure'

Aljamain Sterling is ready to close the book on what is undoubtedly the biggest regret of his mixed martial arts career.

In August, the ‘Funk Master’ surrendered his bantamweight world title following an early second-round knockout against Sean O’Malley at UFC 292. A mere three months earlier, Sterling successfully defended his title against Olympic gold medalist Henry Cejudo, giving him little time to properly heal and prepare for ‘Sugar.’

Sterling has been quite vocal about the pressure he received from the promotion to jump right back into the fire after going five hard rounds with Cejudo. Now the recently released Fight Inc: Inside The UFC documentary is forcing him to relive it all over again.

In one behind-the-scenes clip, the promotion’s Chief Business Officer Hunter Campbell asks Sterling to take the August fight not long after securing his third-straight title defense.

Needless to say, seeing the scene brought all of Sterling’s aggravation bubbling back to the surface.

“From that night, I said, I don’t know what he’s talking about,” Sterling said on his YouTube channel. “‘I have no desire to fight right now.’ And that was the whole thing I was saying. I have to heal up and see how my body holds up. We can fast forward, yes, I came into the fight compromised, into the training camp compromised. O’Malley got hurt during his training camp, two completely different things, but still the same. Both guys came into the fight with some lingering injuries.

“I think the difference was, in my personal opinion, the mind set. I think O’Malley was there to win at all costs. I was there to win, but I was also just there to be a participant. I hate to say it, but it’s the harsh reality. There’s a complete difference when someone is on, when they’re in the zone, and you can see when someone’s flowing, everything just went perfect.

“In a basketball game, in a football game, fighting, wrestling, when someone’s just on. You ever see those guys in wrestling tournaments that end up winning the whole thing as an unseeded person because something just clicked? They want to be there, they’re excited, and everything was just in sync for them. I didn’t feel that that night in August. No excuses, once again, no excuses. The better man that night won” (h/t MMA Fighting).

Aljamain Sterling still frustrated by the poor pPV buyrate of uFC 292

While the subject is still a sore one for the former 135-pound champ, Aljamain Sterling’s biggest regret isn’t necessarily taking the fight on short notice or even putting himself in a position to lose the belt.

“The only thing I say I regret is if I knew the pay-per-view numbers were going to be what it was, I would have just sat until January, February, March, and waited to fight,” Sterling said. “That’s the only thing I regret, because I felt like it was the opportunity of a lifetime after saying no, being coerced into doing it. Nobody put a gun to my head. I eventually succumbed to the pressure and said, ‘OK, fine. I’ll do it. And after this I’m going on my vacation.’ I said, win or lose I’m going on my vacation.”

“In hindsight, I wish I stuck to my guns and just waited, because the bag of loot, the golden pot, Lucky Charms, or whatever at the end of the rainbow — I mean, I made good money, but it wasn’t what I was thinking it was going to be, and I’m motivated by money. I’m a freaking prizefighter, I fight for money. We all do. So if the bag was going to be that and it was known, obviously, hindsight 20/20, I would have just opted to chill.”

Aljamain Sterling

The buyrate for UFC 292 has not been released, but insider reports claim that the event drew in somewhere around 350,000 purchases.

According to a report from Hal Singer, champions typically receive $1 for every pay-per-view ticket sold when the buyrate lands between 200,000 and 400,000. Over 400,000, the payout doubles to $2 per PPV purchase and then again bumps up to $2.50 once the event eclipses more than 600,000.

That would mean Aljamain Sterling took home an extra $350,000 in addition to his base pay and other bonuses. In total, the ‘Funk Master’ is said to have left Boston with nearly $1.3 million.

Dominick Cruz eyes rematch with Henry Cejudo at UFC 306 I think we'd make an awesome fight

Former two-time undisputed bantamweight champion, Dominick Cruz has voiced his interest in a rematch clash against former duel-weight titleholder, Henry Cejudo later this summer at UFC 306 in The Sphere, claiming they could put on an “awesome” rematch fight.

Cruz, a former two-time bantamweight titleholder and current number thirteen ranked divisional challenger, has been out of action since August 2022, most recently headlining a UFC Fight Night San Diego event.

And despite starting well against most recent title challenger, Marlon Vera, Cruz dropped a devastating fourth round high-kick KO loss to the Ecuadorian.

Linked with a return earlier this year, Cruz was reportedly in talks to take on the returning former featherweight champion, Jose Aldo in a ‘super fight’ from years gone by, until an undisclosed injury ruled the veteran from a UFC 301 outing.

However, Cruz has welcomed the chance to feature at UFC 306 in September at The Sphere in Las Vegas – eyeing the chance to take on Olympic gold medal winner, Cejudo in a re-run.

“There’s a Mexico Independence Day card coming up, and I lost a fight,” Dominick Cruz said on the Overdogs Podcast. “I look back at my loss and I lost it fair and square to Henry Cejudo, but I do believe he could get a better version of me and really face a better version of me.”

“I’ve had rematches against (Joseph) Benavidez, I’ve had rematches against Urijah Faber, I’ve had rematches against that whole Team Alpha MMA where I had to take each guy out, step by step, in order to keep my title,” Dominick Cruz explained. “So, I would love to a rematch with Henry Cejudo on Mexican Independence Day in The Sphere. I think we could make a pretty awesome fight there.”

UFC fans slam Henry Cejudo for calling out 1-4 fighter for a clash at The APEX: 'I just feel sorry for you'

Henry Cejudo is without a doubt one of the greatest combat sports athletes of all time. Aside from holding two UFC world championships simultaneously, he is an Olympic gold medalist, accomplishing a feat only a tiny percentage of human beings will ever achieve.

So why is he practically begging to fight someone barely clinging onto a top-ten spot inside The APEX?

After winning both the bantamweight and flyweight titles and defeating the likes of TJ Dillashaw, Demetrious Johnson, and Dominick Cruz — three of the biggest names in their respective divisions — ‘Triple C’ packed his bags and went home. It was a confusing decision at the prime of his career, but the retirement didn’t last long.

Three years after laying down his gloves, Cejudo returned to challenge then-bantamweight champion Aljamain Sterling at UFC 288. Despite a valiant effort, he came up short on two of the three judges’ scorecards. Still, Cejudo’s performance against one of the best 135’ers of all time was enough to get excited about his second run in the sport.

Henry Cejudo

Then he fought Merab Dvalishvili.

The Machine’ absolutely dominated Cejudo for three rounds at UFC 298, establishing himself as the division’s top contender and knocking ‘Triple C’ even further down the ladder.

Desperate for his first win in more than four years, Cejudo is now turning his attention toward Rob Font, practically begging the Tampa native to sign on the dotted line so they can fight in front of 50 people at The APEX in Las Vegas.

“Hey Rob Font, my wife told me I need to spend more time with my kids so let’s meet up July 20th at the Apex,” Cejudo wrote on X. “Don’t even worry about getting me a Father’s Day Gift, the beating I’m gonna give you will be good enough. Sign the contract hoe.”

Henry Cejudo

That’s a far cry from a fight with Brandon Moreno inside The Sphere.

UFC Fans lament the downfall of Henry Cejudo

Needless to say, fight fans were taken aback by the callout considering that Rob Font is 1-4 in his last five with his only win in the previous three years coming against Adrian Yanez.

Henry Cejudo comes to defense of "innocent" Jon Jones amid drug testing fiasco I would sue for defamation

Former UFC bantamweight champion Henry Cejduo comes to the defence of Jon Jones following latest allegations.

For just about as long as Jon Jones has been a star a trail of controversies and misdeeds has followed him. Incidents have included hit-and-runs, DUIs, domestic violence and positive drug tests from both cocaine and PEDs have all been linked to Jones.

Now Jones has been accused by a tester from The UFC’s drug testing partners Drug Free Sport International, of threatening to kill her while making a visit to his home. Jones has since denied the allegations, but an arrest summons has been issued for the current UFC heavyweight champion.

Henry Cejudo comes to the defense of Jon Jones

While trouble is still following Jones he remains a revered character in the MMA world with many still willing to show the support of him.  Former training partner Cejduo is now the latest person to come to the public defence of Jones.

Discussing the incident on his YouTube channel, Cejudo says he fully believes Jones is innocent.

Henry Cejudo shuts down retirement plans after UFC 298 loss I cannot let it roll like this

“Is Jon Jones innocent? One hundred percent,” Henry Cejudo said. “It’s almost like these people want to somewhat create a story because they want to portray, keep going with the storyline that Jon Jones is ‘the monster.’

“From what I saw in the video, and getting a chance to know Jon, I could get frustrating at times. Trust me by that, I’ve gotten into it with guys from USADA. People who I’ve known for years, people who have tested me for years. They catch you at a party, they catch you at early in the morning. I mean, it’s normal for you to kind of get frustrated like, ‘Hey man, what’s going on here?’” (H/T MMA Junkie)

Cejudo would even go as far as to say Jones should take legal action against the alleged victim and encouraged him to fight for his name.

“If I’m you Jon Jones, you know what I would do? I would get her for defamation of character,” Cejudo continued. “I would get her for being a two-faced c*nt, and trying to come at you for something that you really didn’t do.

“I think if anything Jon, you should probably start fighting this and go against them. Make them think twice before they start bringing your name up. Make them think twice before they’re going to make up a story about you, you know, threatening to kill somebody or whatnot.”

Do you agree with Henry Cejudo’s stance on Jon Jones?

Max Holloway urged to withdraw from UFC 300 title fight with Justin Gaethje he will hurt you

Former undisputed featherweight champion, Max Holloway has been urged to consider withdrawing from his UFC 300 symbolic BMF title fight with Justin Gaethje in April by former duel-weight champion, Henry Cejudo, who claims the former interim lightweight champion will cause irreversible damage to the Hawaiin if they fight.

Holloway, a former undisputed featherweight gold holder, has been sidelined since he headlined UFC Fight Night Singapore back in August – turning in a Fight of the Night display against former title chaser, Chan Sung Jung, landing a spectacular third round KO win ovsr the South Korean.

And as for Gaethje, the Arizona native landed hismelf the symbolic BMF title back in July of last year in Salt Lake City in the main event of UFC 291 against common-foe, Dustin Poirier, turning in a stunning second round high-kick KO in Utah.

Slated to feature in a high-profile UFC 300 main card clash in April, Gaethje will attempt to lodge his first attempted defense of the symbolic BMF crown against Holloway – and hopes to earn an undisputed lightweight title siege with a win.

Max Holloway backed to exit UFC 300 title fight return

However, ahead of the much-anticipated pairing between Gaethje and Holloway, the above-mentioned, Cejudo urged the Hawaiian to eject himself from the BMF title clash – at all costs.

“Get Max Holloway out of the fight with Justin Gaethje and give him that fight [against Ilia Topuria] in Spain,” Henry Cejudo told MMA Junkie. “You fight a guy like Justin Gaethje – Justin Gaethje is a dude that will hurt you, and you will not be the same. He’s done it to Tony Ferguson, he’s done it to a lot of people.”

“It’s lights out when you fight a guy like Justin Gaethje,” Cejudo explained. “I think sometimes you probably gotta save these guys from themselves.”

Do you think Max Holloway can defeat Justin Gaethje at UFC 300?
