And since booking a rescheduled bout with welterweight striker, Neal for a return to the Octagon at UFC 298 in February in Anaheim, California, Garry has vowed to make up for his withdrawal from UFC 296.

Flying home I met so many fans who flew out specifically to see me. F*ck. This is not how I wanted to meet you. I wanted to put on a show more than anything. Thank you for all your kind words, wonderful messages and to everyone who was there for me.”

“You might read hateful comments online but I’ve discovered they aren’t real,” Ian Garry explained. “In real life, you book flights, hotels, you drive miles, and you show up, in Vegas. I appreciate the hell out everyone and I promise I’ll make it up to you all in February.”

UFC welterweight Geoff Neal discusses Ian Garry and his choice to print a t-shirt featuring Neal’s mugshot.

Garry has not done himself any favours over the past few months. While the Irishman has always had his share of detractors, the levels of criticism have spiked significantly recently.

Some of the criticism has come because of Garry’s private life, but some has come because of his ‘trash talk’ or attempts to get under his opponent’s skin. This includes accusing Neil Magny of child abuse, which Magny has said has impacted his custody battle, and Garry putting Neal’s mugshot on a t-shirt and posting it to social media.

While some of the hate towards Garry for his personal life is unwarranted, it must be said the 26-year-old has opened himself up to some criticism after sharing large parts of life online, and also taking shots at fellow fighters.

Geoff Neal talks of attesting Ian Garry booking

Unfortunately, Garry had tri withdraw from his UFC 296 fight against Vicente Luque after catching pneumonia. Instead of rebooking the fight against the Brazilian, the UFC decided to rebook Garry vs. Neal, this time for UFC 299 in Miami.

Talking of Garry’s previous actions, and looking ahead of their bout, Neal did not seem pleased with Garry and was happy to get the fight rebooked.

“I figured we would run it back after because I got sick and I couldn’t fight that last fight — well, just health issues — so I figured he would want to run it back,” Neal said Monday on The MMA Hour. “But then he was talking s***, ‘Well, I already beat him, so I don’t have to fight him.’ Weird s***. I’m glad we got a chance to run it back now.

“It was difficult, especially after all the s*** he was talking and all the stuff going on. Pulling out of the fight, it just looks bad.”

Chael Sonnen hits out at Ian Garry ahead of UFC 296 his PR team sucks it's terrible

Former two-division championship challenger, Chael Sonnen has labelled the public relation team utilized by undefeated welterweight contender, Ian Garry as “terrible” – amid the Dubliner’s sudden withdrawal from his slated UFC 296 return against Vicente Luque this weekend.

Garry, the current number ten ranked welterweight challenger, has been sidelined since he featured on the main card of UFC 292 back in August, most recently improved to 13-0 as a professional with a one-sided unanimous decision win over perennial contender, Neil Magny.

Scheduled to return to the Octagon at UFC 296 this weekend in Las Vegas, Nevada, Portmarnock striker, Ian Garry skirted his pre-fight media day availability on Wednesday, with his wife and manager, Layla Anna-Lee confirming how the Dubliner would not be appearing at his pre-fight obligations.

Chael Sonnen shares his thoughts on Ian Garry

Sharing his thoughts on Garry’s withdrawal from the bout with Luque as he battled pneumonia, former title challenger turned analyst, Sonnen claimed the Dubliner should have at least showed his face to assembled media, before criticizing his PR team.

“I just think there was a few ways to handle that,” Chael Sonnen said during last night’s MMA Awards ceremony. “I think Ian Garry’s got very good advice. He’s clearly had great coaches. Just by example: He’s a handsome guy, he’s well-spoken, he gets the game, his skills are top-shelf. His PR sucks. Not that it’s bad – it sucks. It’s terrible. I only share that because there’s only one thing you can’t do, which is nothing – which is what he did do.”

“He could have showed up to the press conference, sit with a book,” Sonnen explained. “He could have set it up and walked out and the book just sits in his spot. He could have gone to the press conference, put a cigar in, put his feet up and read the book at the press conference and ignored the questions completely. He could have done anything but nothing.”
