Surging welterweight contender, Ian Garry has laid an eye-catching prediction for his sought after fight with former interim division gold holder, Colby Covington – vowing to “beat the mouth off” the outspoken veteran in front of ormer United States president, Donald Trump.

Garry, who made his Octagon return over the course of last weekend, turned in a dominant, albeit uneventful split decision win over Geoff Neal, improving the Dubliner to 14-0 as a professional to boot.

And off the back of his victory, Portmarnock native Garry has landed at number six in the official welterweight rankings.

Shooting his shot for his next opponent, Garry firmly has his sights fixed on a fight with former interim champion, Covington – vowing to beat the Clovis native in front of former president, Trump if they share the Octagon.

“I’ll talk to him (Colby Covington) when I beat the f*ck out of him in the Octagon,” Ian Garry told MMA Fighting. “If (Donald) Trump’s in attendance, I will drag Colby in front of Trump, and I’ll beat the mouth off him, and I’ll say, ‘This is what you’ve created’. Boom. ‘This is MAGA.’ I’m like, ‘It’s not more. Get rid of him. Get him out of the UFC.’”

For Covington, the MMA Masters staple has been chasing a fight with former title chaser, Stephen Thompson since his most recent outing back in December – which saw him falter in a third attempt to become the undisputed champion, dropping a decision shutout loss to the incumbent, Leon Edwards.

Staking his claim for a potential Irish homecoming ever-since his eventual Octagon landing, Garry has since claimed that he may be too much of a “star” to make a return to Dublin, leading to outcry from fans to maintain the 26-year-old does not have ideas above his own station.

UFC welterweight Ian Garry reveals that he cries during the lead-up to a fight.

Following his win over Geoff Neal this past weekend, Garry finds himself as the UFC’s number six ranked welterweight and potentially one big win away from a shot at the title.

Unfortunately for the Irishman and despite his best efforts, he continues to amass a large group of detractors. He and his wife have reived an enormous amount of hate over the past few months, but Ian Garry refuses to change, still posting to social media, doing interviews and open up about his personal life.

When appearing on The MMA Hour Garry rather honestly admitted that he cries during fight day, all the way up to after his warmup.

“As soon as I’m done with my warm-up, I give myself about 20 minutes to just calm the body down and let the body relax,” Garry said. “I put on all my gear – my headphones, my music, whatever it is, my jacket – and put my hood up. I get on all fours, put my hands on my head and my forehead to the ground, and I swear to God, Ariel, it’s instant tears. (H/T The Independent)

“It’s being grateful for the journey that I’m on, the abilities that I have, for the people that are here, for the people that I wish were with me sharing the journey.

Garry would liken the experience to that of taking off armour – to his credit there are not a lot of fighters who would admit to something like this.

“Throughout the day I just feel myself getting more and more emotional,” Garry continued. “The truth is I cry my eyes out and thank God for everything I’ve been blessed with. It’s like taking all the armour off me and then going out and just being myself.”

Despite all the outside noise, Garry would squeak out a decision against the tough and hard-hitting Geoff Neal last night. While the contest may have lacked the drama fans wanted, Garry kept his undefeated record intact and takes another step forward to a shot at a title.

During his post-fight speech, Ian Garry would call out former interim champion, Covington, seemingly confident of a noteworthy victory over ‘Chaos’.

The only issue is that since his initial come-up, Covington’s activity has been spotty, with him only fighting four times since his first title attempt against Kamaru Usman in 2019. The American also seems more interested in taking on more established names and seems willing to wait it out for big fights.

However, Garry seems confident that the UFC could force Covington to face him next,

“He doesn’t have a choice,” Garry said during the UFC 298 post-fight press conference. “He’s lost three title fights. He doesn’t have a choice. Sorry, I don’t mean to interrupt, but there is no other f****** option for him. Who else are they gonna put? He’s not going to sign the fight grapplers, that’s for sure. He’s not gonna fight [Stephen] ‘Wonderboy’ Thompson. Do you know what I mean? What’s the point of putting them two together? (H/T MMA Fighting)

While Garry did may not be a fan of Covington’s antics, ‘The Future’ did compliment the 35-year-old’s fighting ability, but reiterated that he is not in the same position as he was during the peak of his career.

“I might be talking s*** about him – there’s a lot of respect on his name from all the MMA community,” Garry said. “Do you know what I mean? He wrestles hard, he puts up output in fights, but he’s just not 1/10 of the fighter I am. And it’s my job to go out there and prove that, and I would do that with a smile on my face.

“I don’t believe he’s in a position to be picking and choosing his fights. If he wants to fight, he’s going to do what he’s told, and I’m sure [UFC execs] Hunter [Campbell] and Dana [White] will tell him that.”

Unbeaten welterweight contender, Ian Garry is likely set to land within the top-10 of the official divisional rankings come Tuesday next week, turning in a split decision (30-27, 28-29, 30-27) win over Geoff Neal in the pair’s rescheduled clash on the main card of UFC 298 in Anaheim, California.

Garry, who improves to 14-0 with tonight’s victory against Dana White’s Contender Series alum, Neal, circled throughout the Octagon over the course of his three round clash with the Texan striker.

Turning in his fourth straight victory since March of last year, Portmarnock striker, Garry managed to counter Neal when the above-mentioned pressed him to the Octagon fence over and over.

That quickly changed on Friday night as ‘The Future’ was leaving Anaheim’s Honda Center following the weigh-in ceremony.

As Garry was heading out, a fan made a disparaging remark about his wife — Layla Machado Garry. “You talking sh*t about my wife? Don’t f*cking do that,” warned Garry as he was being held back.

Garry’s marriage has come under fire in recent months after fighters, including Sean Strickland and Colby Covington, labeled him a “cuck” and claimed that his wife was still involved with her ex-husband, Richard Cullen. Garry has vehemently denied the accusations.
