Ilia Topuria confident he will overtake Cristiano Ronaldo as the 'Highest-Paid athlete in the world' by 2025

If there is any one thing that Ilia Topuria lacks, it certainly isn’t confidence.

Even before his highlight-reel-worthy knockout of Alexander Volkanovski in February to claim the UFC’s featherweight crown, ‘El Matador’ was talking a big game. More importantly, he has backed it up every step of the way, going 15-0 and capturing a world championship in the process.

Ilia Topuria

With a horde of European fight fans behind him, Ilia Topuria expects to unseat famous footballer Cristiano Ronaldo as the world’s wealthiest athlete in the coming year.

“Look, I can tell you that I have no doubt that in 2025, I will be the highest-paid athlete in the world,” Topuria told Webpositer. “I’ll be there. I’d be surprised if I didn’t do it. I have no doubt, really” (h/t MMA Fighting).

Ilia Topuria Doubles down on his BMF title demand

Given that so many of his predictions have already come to fruition, it’s hard to doubt anything Ilia Topuria has to say about his own career. However, to reach that next level, he’ll have to go through some of the toughest names in the game — namely Max Holloway.

Holloway is coming off a career-defining knockout of Justin Gaethje at UFC 300 to claim the promotion’s bragging rights belt, the BMF title. That has all but guaranteed ‘Blessed’ a crack at Topuria’s featherweight strap — so long as Holloway puts his new hardware on the line as well.

Max Holloway

“You are the BMF champion, you have the opportunity for the title, to fight for the title,” Topuria said. “What are you going to do? Are you going to fight or are you not going to fight? He says, ‘Sign the contract,’ this, that, such and such. Where are you? Put the title in the game.

“What I said was how I’m not going to fight him if he doesn’t put the BMF belt on the line. [Holloway] was like, ‘That’s not the way a real BMF claims the title.’ You want me to come and put this belt on the table, and you don’t want to put yours [on the table]? That is, if you lose, you want to continue being the BMF. How does this work? I mean, what BMF are you?

Topuria vs. Holloway is without a doubt the No. 1 fight on every fight fan’s featherweight wishlist. Should ‘Blessed’ get passed over, ‘El Matador’ has his sights set on a rematch with Volkanovski or a potential showdown with division mainstay Brian Ortega.

Brian Ortega

“If [the BMF belt] is not on the line, the only thing that makes it relevant, I would first give Volkanovski the opportunity for a rematch,” Topuria said. “Before that, I would fight Brian Ortega, who was much closer to finishing Volkanovski in one fight than Max did in three.

“[Ortega] always puts his face in there and he fights. He has won his last fight, he has several good victories. Would I like to go ahead against him, of course, I would, because right now it’s like who but him?”

Newly-minted undisputed featherweight champion, Ilia Topuria has been linked heavily in recent weeks with title defenses against both former titleholders, Alexander Volkanovski, and Max Holloway, however, has identified Brian Ortega as the ideal opponent to face him next.

Topuria, the current undisputed featherweight champion, most recently headlined UFC 298 back in February in Anaheim, turning in a spectacular second round knockout win over the previously mentioned, Volkanovski in the pair’s heated championship fight.

As for Ortega, the two-time title chaser has been sidelined since co-headlining UFC Fight Night Mexico City back in February, rallying with a third round arm-triangle choke to beat former interim champion, Yair Rodríguez in the pair’s rematch.

Boasting a Performance of the Night bonus as well as the number three rank in the division with his victory over Chihuahua native, Rodríguez at Mexico City – Ortega had been backed the most likeliest opponent to stand opposite Topuria by the bookies in the Spaniard’s first title defense.

And urged to get on with things amid his championship tour following his UFC 298 title coronation, Topuria has dismissed a grudge bout with newly-minted BMF gold holder, Holloway, in favor of a clash with the recent winner, Ortega instead.

“Brian Ortega makes most sense,” Ilia Topuria told during a recent interview with WebPositer. “He’s always ready to fight plus he just beat Yair (Rodríguez). Max (Holloway) can wait.”

Furthermore, long-time color-commentator, Joe Rogan claimed recently that Topuria had been approached regarding a potential rematch with the above-mentioned, Volkanovski at UFC 305 in August in a trip Downunder, however, rejected the immediate re-run

With his knockout win over the New South Wales native back in February, Topuria improved to 15-0 as a professional, recording his thirteenth stoppage success to boot.

Touring his championship strap throughout his residency in Spain since his coronation in February, undisputed featherweight titleholder, Ilia Topuria has been urged to make his UFC return soon – and especially against top divisional contenders.

Topuria, the current undisputed featherweight champion, landed that moniker back in February in the main event of UFC 298 in Anaheim, stopping the dominant reign of Alexander Volkanovski with a blistering second round KO win.

Remaining unbeaten with his stoppage of Volkanovski, Ilia Topuria was spotted at the Santiago Bernabeu in his residency of Spain, parading the championship belt through the country’s capital city.

And accused recently by UFC color-commentator, Joe Rogan of openly rejecting an immediate title fight rematch with the above-mentioned, Volkanovski as soon as August at UFC 305 in Perth, Ilia Topuria was also recently blasted by Max Holloway – who questioned the lengthy nature of his call out.

Himself offering to defend his title against perennial contender, Brian Ortega should Holloway refuse to put his symbolic BMF crown on the line in their pairing, Topuria has been urged to get on with it by Hall of Fame inductee, Daniel Cormier.

“You need the name that comes from the generation before,” Daniel Cormier said on his YouTube channel. “Ilia (Topuria) seems to be taking another approach. I don’t know exactly what it is, though, because he said he wasn’t going to fight Brian Ortega, he said he wasn’t going to fight Max Holloway, and now it sounds like he’s not wanting to fight Alexander Volkanovski again.”

“He has to make a statement saying, ‘This is what I want as the champ’ and then put the ball in Max’s court to deny it,” Cormier explained. “But right now, it’s not coming off great. He’s batting away all these guys with no clear idea of who else there is – it’s just weird. He’s not telling us what’s next, but he’s saying no to a lof things that can be right no. I don’t know that you can do that as the champ.”

Receiving a rather lengthy call out from undisputed featherweight champion, Ilia Topuria after his stunning UFC 300 victory, Max Holloway admitted he was taken aback at the Georgian’s offer – claiming he didn’t even take the time to read the response.

As for Topuria, the Spaniard resident headlined UFC 298 back in February, ending the dominant featherweight title run of Alexander Volkanovski with a crushing second round KO win in Anaheim.

Weighing up a slew of fights in the aftermath of his stoppage win against Gaethje, Hawaiian favorite, Holloway welcomed clashes with lightweight kingpin, Islam Makhachev, as well as a featherweight return to tangle with the above-mentioned, Topuria.

Laying out his demands to defend his title with Holloway on home soil, Topuria claimed if the former would not oblige, he would simply face off with would-be common-opponent, Brian Ortega instead.

However, taking umbrage with Topuria’s comments, Holloway claimed he was surprised at the length of the defending champion’s social media response.

“He (Ilia Topuria) writes like a freakin’ paragraph to me,” Max Holloway said during an appearance on The Joe Rogan Experience. “I didn’t even read it, that’s how long it was. He writes a paragraph to me, and I was just tripping out. It was like an angry girlfriend text, you know, Like my wife don’t even text me like that.”

“I read the first sentence and I was like, ‘I’m not reading this, bro,”’ Max Holloway continued. “‘What the hell is wrong with you?’ I don’t know what’s going on. I rea the first two and then I saw you had to scroll, I was like ‘What the f*ck? Did I make my wife mad?’ I had to make sure it wasn’t her.”

Furthermore, during Rogan’s conversation with Holloway – the long-time color-commentator claimed he had heard Topuria turned down the chance to fight the above-mentioned, Volkanovski in a UFC 305 title fight rematch in August.

“I don’t know who he (Ilia Topuria) wants to fight next,” Joe Rogan said on The Joe Rogan Experience during an interview with former featherweight titleholder, Max Holloway. “But I mean – I guess he feels like he’s the champ and he can call the shots.”

“I know he turned down the Perth one [UFC 305], the 305 – the (Alexander) Volkanovski rematch,” Rogan explained.

Max Holloway took quite a few leg kicks from Justin Gaethje during their BMF title fight at UFC 300.

Holloway scored an incredible fifth-round knockout win over Gaethje to become the BMF champion. It was an incredible win from Holloway, but he did take some nasty leg kicks, and during the fight a welt started to show.

Following the win, Holloway was on his Kick live stream and showed off some of the damage he took from the leg kicks.

His leg was still swelled up from the kicks, showing how serious the leg kicks were, but Holloway powered through the leg kicks through the fight to get the knockout win.

Max Holloway eyes featherweight title shot

With Max Holloway becoming the BMF champion, the plan for the Hawaiian is to return to featherweight to fight Ilia Topuria for the title.

Even before Holloway won the BMF belt, he and Topuria had been trading shots at one another, and that has only increased since then.

Speaking on The MMA Hour, Max Holloway says he wants Ilia Topuria next time out and hopes it does happen.

“That was always my main goal. My main goal was always fighting Ilia,” Holloway said. “This was a fun fight. Shout out to Justin Gaethje. Justin Gaethje’s a legend, ‘The Highlight,’ he had everything to lose. He gave me the shot and this happened. But in my mind it was always, no matter what, win, lose, whatever it is, even until today, I wanted to fight Ilia.

“People always ask me, ‘What are your thoughts on Ilia?’ The only thing that comes to my mind is it’s questionable. The dude is super questionable. Every other 145 contender that they wanted to fight [Alexander Volkanovski], they went through me. They fought me or they had to fight me. That’s one guy that eluded me. I don’t know how, I don’t know why, but he did and he got the title shot,” Holloway added.

Currently, the fight between Holloway and Topuria has not been booked, but both men are calling for the bout to happen next.
