Alexander Volkanovski was one of the most active champions on the roster during his UFC featherweight title reign but after losing the belt earlier this year, he’s finally taken some long overdue time off.

Rather than jumping right back into a rematch with Ilia Topuria following their first encounter at UFC 298, he made the decision to wait and see how things play out.

In his absence, Topuria is expected to face BMF titleholder Max Holloway in the coming months with a recent social media post from the champion suggesting that an announcement isn’t far away.

Though Volkanovski is going to be ready and waiting for the winner, he may also be keeping his phone by his side during fight week for the featherweight title bout.

Alexander Volkanovski Says He Will Be Fight-Ready Just In Case He’s Needed

It has become a regular joke amongst MMA fans that Volkanovski will answer the call to step in for absolutely anybody after what went down at UFC 294 last year.

The 145-pound champion, at the time, stepped in on two weeks notice to face lightweight king Islam Makhachev in a rematch and ultimately regretted his decision after the fight didn’t go his way.

Despite his coaches believing that this was the wrong decision to make at the time, it doesn’t appear to have deterred Volkanovski.

He openly admitted that he wasn’t in fighting shape when agreeing to face Makhachev but he’s now ready to ensure that if the UFC come calling, he’s good to go.

During UFC 304 fight week, he told The Mac Life in an interview that though he’s happy to wait to face Topuria or Holloway, he will be just one call away if either man is unfit to compete.

“It’s a situation obviously, again, I’m going to be getting antsy but you know, we’ve got plenty of good content coming. I’m going to, you know, I will stay ready and Ash [manager] ain’t going to like this one. I’ll be training really hard and fight fit cuz if there is a late notice, cuz that s*** excites me man, it gets me going but I’ll actually be ready for it this time. I’ll make sure I’m in good nick all year round because I want, so even me having that in my head that if you have to save the day here or there, it’s going to help in training, keep things exciting.”

Max Holloway Hits Back At Ilia Topuria Blaming Him For Fight Delay: ‘Guy Is Just Making Things Up At This Stage’

If someone is to blame for the lack of a date for their fight, Max Holloway has told UFC Featherweight Champion Ilia Topuria that it does not lie at his door.

Holloway, a former titleholder at 145 pounds, appeared to secure his position as number one contender in the division with his exploits up at lightweight this year.

Following back-to-back wins over Arnold Allen and “The Korean Zombie” in 2023, “Blessed” returned to 155 pounds to challenge for Justin Gaethje’s symbolic BMF strap at the milestone UFC 300 pay-per-view event this past April.

After delivering a highlight that is being discussed among the most memorable in UFC history, Holloway outlined his intention to regain the featherweight gold. While Topuria appeared to favor other options, even naming Brian Ortega as a more logical opponent, he’s since vowed to be the first to knock the Hawaiian out.

That bout is still awaiting official confirmation, however, and “El Matador” claims that personal matters and weight difficulties on the side of Holloway are the cause.

“It’s not because of me,” Topuria said when asked why the UFC hasn’t announced his first title defense yet. “They called me to say Max Holloway was having family issues, that he was having trouble cutting weight, and that he wanted to fight at a higher weight class. Honestly, I don’t know. I have no idea.”

It didn’t take long for Holloway to call those remarks out as false…

Holloway Drops Sphere Event As Preferred Date After Rejecting Topuria Claims

Following Topuria’s comments while attending the El Matador film presentation in Madrid, “Blessed” quickly took to social media to accuse the champ of “making thing up” regarding why their fight is yet to come to fruition.

“Guy is just making things up at this stage,” Holloway wrote. “I been ready.”

When Topuria responded by inviting Holloway to drop a desired date, the former champ pointed to the upcoming pay-per-view at Las Vegas’ Sphere on September 14.

“Been talking to them brother. You need to check your numbers. Since you said it the Sphere by toe hold. See you soon.”

Ilia Topuria

Undefeated UFC featherweight contender, Ilia Topuria has claimed the promotion are “protecting” lightweight favorite, Paddy Pimblett from a fight with him next, after scoring a dominant submission win over Bryce Mitchell at UFC 282.

Topuria, an alum of Cage Warriors, recorded his fifth consecutive Octagon victory over the course of weekend in a main card opener against grappling standout, Mitchell – finishing the Arkansas native with a second round arm-triangle choke win, moving to 13-0 as a professional.

As for Pimblett, the Liverpool native also remained undefeated during is respective Octagon tenure to date as well, landing a debated and scrutinized unanimous decision win over Jared Gordon in the night’s co-main event.

However, earlier this year, and even during the course of the week’s pre-fight press conference, Pimblett and Topuria have shared a harsh and fierce war-of-words, with many calling for the duo to eventually share the Octagon with each other in the near future.

Ilia Topuria claims UFC are protecting Paddy Pimblett from clash with him next

Suggesting a fight with Pimblett next as well as calling for the promotion to make their debut in Spain – his country of residence, Topuria claims the UFC are protecting the Liverpudlian from a fight against him.

“The UFC is protecting him (Paddy Pimblett) from me, you know,” Ilia Topuria told Ariel Helwani on The MMA Hour. “I don’t know why – in reality, that’s the fight to make right now. Because it’s one of the biggest fights I think in the UFC.”

“We can perfectly sell a pay-per-view [together],” Ilia Topuria explained. “I think so. That fight makes more excitement for people, than most championship fights.”

Topuria’s submission success against Mitchell followed a prior knockout win over Pimblett’s compatriot, Jai Herbert in July of this year at UFC London – making a brief lightweight division excursion.

As for Pimblett, the outspoken former Cage Warriors featherweight champion claimed those who questioned the legitimacy of his judging win over Gordon over the course of the weekend were only “haters” of his.
