Bold Statement of the Day: Miesha Tate Will Shoot Herself in the Face if Ronda Rousey Armbars Her Again

(What a tragedy. And she was such a pretty girl, too. / Miesha Tate ‘Body Issue’ photo by Ben Watts for ESPN The Magazine)

To say that Miesha Tate is still haunted by her gnarly armbar loss to Ronda Rousey last year would be an understatement. In a recent interview with MMAFightCorner (via BleacherReport), Tate explains that suffering a second armbar loss to Ronda at their rematch at UFC 168 in December would be a suicide-worthy scenario. Figuratively speaking. Maybe.

It’s never too early to train and practice that gameplan over and over and over, I’m going to beat it into my skull if I have to,” Tate said. “Swear to God, she’s not going to armbar me if it’s the last thing I do. I will seriously shoot myself in the face before I leave that cage if she armbars me again. It can’t happen.

Two things…

1) I wasn’t aware that fighters were allowed to bring guns into the Octagon, following the Diaz-Cerrone Peace Accords of 2011.

2) I have no problem with this.

Tate went on to give her own explanation of why she fell prey to Rousey’s signature move, and described the Rondabar in terms that make it even more mysterious and scary:

2) I have no problem with this.

Tate went on to give her own explanation of why she fell prey to Rousey’s signature move, and described the Rondabar in terms that make it even more mysterious and scary:

“For one, not being too emotional. I think that was the biggest problem last time was she got inside my head and she made me really, really angry,” Tate said. “I just don’t think I feed well off of negative energy. I’d rather just be positive about it and just be happy. I love the sport, I love fighting and that to me is definitely the key to victory. Other than that I think I possess all the skills to beat her, I think I just need to calm down a little bit and not go grabbing a hold of her and letting her just launch me into an armbar again. It was just really stupid.”

As far as the gameplan, Miesha explained that Rousey’s judo and trademark move that’s stopped all seven women that she’s faced requires special training. That’s something she’s planning on focusing in on right away.

“Everyone thinks it’s an armbar, it’s not. It’s like a move of it’s own,” said Tate.

“I also need to stop the judo. I mean that’s another part of it. If she goes out there and throws me and she can’t armbar me, that’s a big part of the fight too,” said Tate. “That’s what I’m going to do from now until December 28, it’s going to be an anti-judo camp.”

Stop the judo? Dang, why hasn’t anyone ever thought of that before!

Tate is clearly fired up for revenge, but there’s a reason why Rousey is nearly a 10-1 favorite in this rematch, which was only booked out of convenience. Are you guys seeing another first-round armbar victory for the champ?

Great Dana White Vlog or Greatest Dana White Vlog?

UFC 162 takes place this Saturday in Las Vegas and organization President Dana White has released his first video blog of the week leading up to the event. It’s pretty good.

In it, UFC Hall of Fame fighter Chuck Liddell teaches TUF finalist Uriah Hall how to set up his deadly over hand right punch, as well as wrestles around with Mike Tyson and Royce Gracie. Liddell protege Glover Teixeira gets to meet Tyson, a hero of his and Uncle Dana personally makes the streets of Vegas safer.

Enjoy the vlog in between charred meat sessions today, all you American taters. For our Canadian friends – enjoy work, suckers!

Crap. I guess I’m working today too…and without that whole socialized health care benefit to boot.

Still, ‘Merica!

Dana White: If Anderson Silva Loses to Chris Weidman, He Will Receive an Immediate Rematch

(Weidman watches and comments on Anderson Silva vs. Stephan Bonnar live, last year in Brazil. Video via YouTube.com/fueltv)

On Monday, UFC President Dana White told MMA Junkie that, should middleweight champion Anderson Silva lose his title defense against Chris Weidman this Saturday at UFC 162 in Las Vegas, “I’d do the rematch the next fight.”

White went on to explain why Silva’s title defense against Weidman might just effectively be a warm-up match for the champion. “[Silva] hasn’t lost in the UFC ever, has beat everybody. He loses that fight, he’s the guy for a rematch if he wants it.”

While a decision like this could be perceived as indicative of the UFC desperately wanting to keep Silva champion and of their willingness to do just about anything to make sure that happens, immediate title rematches are not without precedent and are, in fact, becoming quite common in the organization. (These kinds of rematches also have a long tradition in boxing, where bout agreements often include automatic rematch clauses for champions.)

Silva certainly deserves one based on past accomplishments, as White suggested, but a rematch could also just be good business. For his part, Weidman is certainly not surprised by White’s announcement. The #1 contender has already says that he expects to have to face and beat Silva twice. Heck, his coach Matt Serra had to do the same thing when he beat Georges St. Pierre in 2007.

“If I beat Anderson Silva, I definitely kind of expect a rematch,” Weidman said recently.

“Unless he decides to retire because he’s the greatest of all time. He’s been undefeated in the UFC, and I’m sure he’s not just going to lose and then fight a couple of guys to get a title shot again. He’s going to be right back in there.”

Do you think automatic immediate rematches are fair to underdogs who manage to pull out wins, Potato Nation? And, if you are one of the many who are giving Weidman more than snowball’s chance in hell, do you think he can take out “The Spider” twice in a row?

Awww Snap! Renzo Gracie Says Anderson Silva Not a Humble Guy

Renzo Gracie fought on the UFC 112 card where Anderson Silva infuriated most of the known MMA world with his taunting of Demian Maia during their main event bout. Gracie is also connected with #1 middleweight contender Chris Weidman, who challenges Silva in one week at UFC 162.

In case you were wondering if Gracie and Silva’s shared mother country would keep the Jiu Jitsu legend from talking smack about Silva – it won’t. Speaking to The Fight Network, Gracie said, “Anderson is a guy that rubs many people the wrong way. He’s not a humble guy.”

Alright, so it’s not exactly mother f_cking Silva, but Renzo does seem to mean it as a serious criticism.

“Even though he may speak humbly when he talks, when he’s in the ring he doesn’t act humble. He puts down his opponents. He acts in a way that again, we always know what is right and wrong, and by looking at that, we know it’s wrong. It’s like you can beat your opponent, but do it with respect,” Gracie continued.

Saying Silva isn’t humble is a bit like saying that Michael Jordan is arrogant. No kidding, and who really cares?

Throwbacks like Renzo, we suppose. Renzo might hold on to a choke way after a ref has stepped in, or stomp on the head of an opponent of one of his fighters after the bell, sure.

He’s ruthlessly aggressive in fights but we can’t ever remember him taunting opponents during the fight. He’s all business, and it’s a grimy business.

Check out the video above for Renzo’s take on the bout as well as that of Weidman’s striking coach, Ray Longo.
