At age 20, most young men don’t know what they want to one day do for a living.

If all goes according to his plan, Sam King will someday make his living in the world of mixed martial arts.

“I started wrestling when I was 14,” said King, who wrestled for three years at Archbishop M.C. O’Neill in his native Regina, Saskatchewan before coming to Complete Martial Arts and Fitness two years ago. “(After high school), I didn’t do anything for a year and I started training at Complete.”

“I just liked fighting, so I started training,” King explained with a laugh. “When I played hockey, I was always the fighter. I was an aggressive kid, I guess.”

According to King, who trains under AJ Scales six days a week in Regina, it didn’t take long to come to the conclusion that this is what he wanted to do for a living.

“I’ve loved it from the beginning,” King said. “I intended on fighting from the very beginning, too. I see myself one day making a career out of this—I want this to be my life.”

According to Scales, a black belt in Brazilian jiu-jitsu and undefeated mixed martial artist, it wouldn’t be a stretch to see King one day collecting cheques in the highly-competitive world of mixed martial arts.

“(Sam) has a great attitude,” Scales noted. “He’s very disciplined and he’s willing to learn anything …I think he can go very far. We’re grooming him to do all the right things and take all the right steps. If he wants to be a professional in this sport, I think he can.”

King, who recently spent time at the famed Tiger Muay Thai academy in Thailand, is now preparing for his first mixed martial arts match—a two round amateur contest against Chris Berry under the Saturday Night Fights banner on Saturday in Regina.

“I feel good and I just really want it to happen,” King said. “I’ve been waiting for this day for a long time…I’m going to go in there, touch gloves and see what happens.”

“I feel really good about (Sam’s upcoming match),” Scales added. “He’s been in the gym six days a week, he’s done all of the work that he had to do to come into this match on Saturday and I feel very, very confident.”

Although King intends on picking up a big victory on Saturday evening and wants to go as far as he can in the sport, he is nevertheless taking his career one fight at a time.

“The next step is just to get back to the gym, get better and start looking to the next one.”

It’s hard to deny just how success the Ultimate Fighting Championship has quickly become over the most recent decade.

Behind President Dana White, the UFC has quickly emerged as the front-runner for all mixed martial arts organizations.

A major reason for this success is the unmatchable entertainment provided from the fighters who represent this prestigious organization.

However, they certainly aren’t the only ones, as the UFC’s foundation is built upon a collaborative effort from every individual involved. One of these individuals is Brittney Palmer, an Octagon girl who’s emerged as a fan favorite across the globe.

In a recent interview with Palmer, I had the privileged of going behind the scenes and learning more about the Brittney many fans love and appreciate, as well as learn about her future plans with the UFC.

Garrett Derr: Brittney, you’re recognized as one of the most popular ring girls in the UFC. But, there’s obviously a lot more to you than that. There’s a lot of talent that fans don’t know about. One of these being your love for art. Can you tell us a little bit about how you got into this career and how it became such a huge part of your life?

Brittney Palmer: I’ve always been into art, dancing or something related to those fields. About a couple years ago I picked up the paint brush again and found a really cool niche. I enjoyed painting and listening to Jimmy Hendrix and vibing out with that.

I started posting my paintings on Twitter and the fans responded well and they loved it. So, I said to myself, maybe I can make a career out of this.

GD: So, is this something you would consider doing following your career in the UFC?

BP: Yes of course. Ultimately this is what I want to do, this is my passion. Do I think being a UFC Octagon girl is great? Absolutely. It’s my dream job. But, I do know one day my looks will fade [laughing] and I’ll have to depend on other things. So yes, that’s my ultimate goal.

GD: You took some time away from the UFC and fans clearly weren’t happy about it. There’s now rumors you could be returning for UFC 140. Is there any truth behind this? Is there anything set in stone?

BP: Yes it is set in stone, I will be back for UFC in Toronto for New Years! Fans will see me there for the first time. But, yes I did take some time off. I was doing classes and it was so hard to squeeze everything into one. I just wanted to take a vacation and figure out my life. I was raised in Vegas my whole life and moving to another city, you want to stay grounded.

GD: Since your coming back for UFC 140, do you have any predictions for the fight card?

BP: You know, it’s so hard for me to do predictions because I’m always wrong [laughing],  I’m a terrible gambler, I always lose, and I’m horrible at it. I expect a really bad ass night and for the fights to go a couple rounds. And, hopefully be an all-out drag-out war.

GD: I understand you’re quite the athlete. Between surfing, snowboarding, and even sky diving. What are some other things you like to do outside of the Octagon?

BP: I work with the Gamma Labs which is this awesome nutrition lab. I’ve been doing Muay Thai training. There’s a video with Kenny Florian and I doing ground-and-pound workouts. I love to snowboard, I love to surf, I love to bike. I’ve been backpacking in Colorado. I love everything. I want to go to Italy. I want to snowboard the Alps. Anything that gets my blood pumping.

GD: So, is there any chance of you entering mixed martial arts?

BP: No, there’s no chance [laughing]. I just love the workouts.

GD: Doesn’t hurt to ask. You know, fans love you not just because you’re with the UFC, but because you’re a great person all around. Who do you credit your success to? Who’s someone who’s really helped you along the way?

BP: I have a really great home base. My mother and grandmother are really important and supportive of me. Just growing up in Vegas and seeing people getting stuck in the whirlwind, noticing what everyone else is doing and not being that was my goal.

Everything I’ve done this far has always been the product of the environment I grew up in. A lot of people aren’t really happy so I kind of learned my own way with things and it’s working. I’m trying to be the best person that I can be and just be honest with myself. It’s so important to me that people look at me and see me as a good person.

GD: And, you certainly are. You have a new calendar coming out, tell us a little bit about this. Where can fans get a copy?

BP: Yes! I have a 2012 Brittney Palmer bikini calender and it’s super cool. I’m the creative decorator behind everything. All the pictures, the looks, the locations and the wardrobe is copyrighted to me. It’s special knowing I did 100 percent of it. You can find it on my website at BrittneyPalmer.com and it’s really cool. When we’re doing a tour they’ll be there.

GD: Great. Well, Brittney it was great talking with you and congrats on making it back to the Octagon. We’re excited to see you at UFC 140!

Strikeforce’s Alexis Davis on Ronda Rousey vs Miesha Tate: This Is MMA, Not Judo

The too-often overlooked sport of women’s MMA has suddenly received quite a bit of attention this week following controversial comments coming from new Strikeforce contender Ronda Rousey, who recently flawlessly submitted Julia Budd in her second fight for the promotion. The young fighter has already made a splash by calling out current Strikeforce 135-pound women’s champion, Miesha Tate.

After competing in just a total of four MMA fights, though, Rousey has received quite a bit of backlash from her fellow contenders as well as Tate herself, who believe that Rousey should have to take her place in line behind those who have established themselves in the division already.

One of those competitors who has already made a name for herself as a contender, is Strikeforce 135-pounder, Alexis Davis. The Canadian mixed martial artist is on a three-fight win streak which includes two huge victories in recent months over Julie Kedzie and Amanda Nunes.

Davis was not going to sit on the sidelines while a new face to the division shot past her into immediate title contention. Still, she understands that while Ronda Rousey has frustrated some, what she has been doing since her most recent victory has put the kind of spotlight on women’s MMA that it has rarely received.

“Morally, I wouldn’t do it quite that way, but it’s gotten everyone’s attention, hasn’t it? With her being so forthright about it, it’s really getting everybody talking,” Davis told Bleacher Report MMA. “If she gets a chance in there, that’s going to be why… She’s coming out, she’s calling out people, she’s causing controversy with all of women’s MMA. Everybody’s looking at her, she’s going to sell tickets. But a lot of us aren’t like that. We’re humble. That’s just the way we are.”

That humble way of addressing the media, and respectful way that Davis and other women in the sport have gone about presenting themselves, has done a great job of bringing legitimacy to women’s MMA. However, while Davis admires what Rousey has done throughout her young MMA career, she is not quite sold on the budding star as a championship contender at this point.

“I think Ronda is a great fighter, she has a lot of skills,” Davis admitted. “But do I think she should get a title shot? I don’t think so. Not right now. She’s had four fights and that’s fantastic. You did awesome in those four fights, but to go from where you haven’t even fought in the division to ranked in the top of it, I don’t agree with that.”

This sentiment was shared by Miesha Tate, who joined Bleacher Report MMA’s Steven Muehlhausen on the Fight Club Chicago earlier this week. Davis and Tate seem to agree that while Rousey is a former Olympic medalist Judo player, that should not change the fact that she has only fought in four professional MMA fights.

“That’s great, she fought Judo in the Olympics, but that’s been how long ago? It wasn’t yesterday,” Davis explained. “No one can take those accomplishments away from her. She’s a great Judo fighter, but it’s not Judo! Just like if somebody comes in and wins the world [championship] for jiu-jitsu. Do you think, right away, they should be high-ranked? No, because it’s MMA. It’s mixed martial arts. It’s not Judo, it’s not jiu-jitsu. It’s not Muay Thai, it’s not kickboxing. It’s combined martial arts.”

While she didn’t discount the chances of Rousey eventually earning a title shot, Davis does believe that the newcomer needs to prove herself against a higher level of competition before she starts calling out the top 135-pound women’s fighter in the world.

“I think there’s a lot of people out there who underestimate Miesha Tate. She is the women’s champion and she’s the women’s champion for a reason.”

Fellow top-level contender Sarah Kaufman has also been involved in this situation, as some believe that she should be the next contender for the women’s 135-pound title. Davis understands why Kaufman feels that way, but has a differing opinion from the woman who defeated her in her professional MMA debut.

“I want a title shot and I think I deserve one. If it was my decision, I would say I should have one, and I bet Sarah [Kaufman] is thinking the same way,” Davis said. “But if I have to fight another fight before I get that opportunity, then I will. If Strikeforce thinks that Ronda should be a top contender, then obviously I’m going to prove, not just to myself but to Strikeforce, that it should be me.”

Davis’ management told Bleacher Report MMA that Strikeforce has instructed them to be ready to compete in January 2012. While no opponent has officially been named, Davis has quite a few options with whom she would be satisfied fighting.

“I would love to fight Miesha, obviously, she’s the title-holder. If I can’t have her, I’d love to have a chance at Sarah Kaufman to avenge a loss,” she continued. “[Sarah]’s got a target on her back, too, because she’s fought so many top contenders out there. And you know what? I’d like to see Marloes [Coenen] come back, too. So there are some top contenders out there who you can have other than Ronda. If it is Ronda, I’m obviously going to fight her. I’m not going to let her walk by me to get her title shot. I think I deserve it more than she does and I won’t sit on the sidelines.”

No matter who she fights, though, Davis understands that women’s mixed martial arts needs to get more attention somehow. She’s just not sure that the way Rousey is going about is the best solution.

“We may all disagree with Ronda and the way she’s doing it, but there’s a problem… We need to get more attention on women’s MMA. It’s just a shame that it’s got to be bad press and we have to talk crap about each other in order to get attention.”

A B/R Interview: Jesse Gross Ready to Get Back on Track Against Cruickshank

Jesse “The Ghost” Gross is ready to make things right in his young MMA career as he has taken a last minute tilt against tough, unorthodox, Michigan puncher Daron Cruikshank this Saturday night at The Meltdown in Sarnia.

Gross burst on the MMA scene in 2009-2010 with six consecutive wins before a very controversial loss against Brad Cardinal in May of this year derailed his run. If not for a questionable referee stoppage “The Ghost” could have easily remained an undefeated 7-0 in his career.

Gross then made his debut in Bellator in July and lost a tough one to Alexandre Bezerra via rear naked choke. It has been a tough time for Gross to meet the expectations he set with his impressive start. His opponent this weekend knocked out Cardinal in the first round in June.

The Meltdown, is presented by The Score Fighting Series. The event goes down from Sarnia, Ontario, and is a packed card filled with local MMA stars.

Find out who “The Ghost” picks in Meltdown’s Clements vs Clementi in the full interview video attached.

Here are some interview highlights…

On his opponent Daron Cruickshank

“I have a last minute fight here against Daron Cruickshank. I’ve known Daron since I started fighting. I made my amateur debut and I think he made his debut or his second fight the same night so,” he said.

“We came up together in amateur in XFC and he was the welterweight champion and I was actually the lightweight champion so. We were always the same size and I was always asking him when he is gonna drop down because I thought he should be fighting at lightweight, now he’s finally made the drop down and crushed through some top ten Canadian lightweights now.”

“He is making quite a name for himself over here now he just became the Ringside lightweight champion by beating Mike Ricci and he’s no slouch.”

“Ill tell you right now he definitely has better wrestling than I do, If he chooses to take it down it’s going to be a tough night for me to try to stop it.”

“Because he is such a good wrestler he gets away with a lot of wild stuff because people can’t take him down. He’ll go out there and try to throw a lot of flashy kicks, like spinning this and flying whatever. I’m hoping to be a step up from strikers he’s faced in the past so he won’t be able to get away with that.”

On what this fight means to his career and future in MMA

“I’ve got my back stuck against the wall and I’m gonna fight to get out of it.”

Jesse Ronson is set to take a nice leap forward in his career on Saturday night when he gets a chance to test his skills against a tough veteran in Tony Hervey at The Meltdown, presented by The Score Fighting Series. The event goes down from Sarnia, Ontario, and is a packed card filled with local MMA stars.

Ronson is a very technically sound yet slick striker who is 7-2 in his career and an impressive 3-1 in 2011. Look for this fight to possibly take Fight of the Night honors on Saturday night.

Find out who “The Body Snatcher” picks in UFC 140 fights Jones vs Machida and Hominick vs Jung in the full interview video attached.

Here are some interview highlights…

Was he disappointed in how The Global Warriors event went down

“I was pissed when that event fell through. I’ve had probably 200 people ask me the same question. It probably took years out of my life just to deal with it.

“I’m not gonna lie obviously I partied for like a week straight and bulked up and therefore the diet was pretty strict leading up to this fight.”

On getting on The Meltdown card and his opponent Tony Hervey

“I was glad to get on the Meltdown card, I wanted to get on Instinct MMA, I called out one guy in particular Derek Gauthier and I tried to get a fight with him but it didn’t happen and he just ended up fighting Ricky Goodall so.

“I was looking all over for a fight, called out Brad Cardinal I called him out too.

“Tony Hervey, they call him the Lionheart, and I watched his fight with Gomi and I don’t know if he has the heart of a lion or the chin of a cinder block because he can take a beating and keep coming, and I like that.

“I see this fight being a striking war. I consider myself more technically sound and I gotta be on my guard with his wild looping shots. Then again, with my power, he doesn’t want to take any of my shots either.

“Every lion can be tamed.”

A B/R Interview: Chris Clements Fights Rich Clementi This Weekend

Chris Clements finally gets a chance to test his skills against a veteran UFC name this weekend when he fights Rich Clementi in The Meltdown, presented by The Score Fighting Series. The event goes down from Sarnia, Ontario and is a packed card filled with local MMA stars.

Clements is coming off a spinning back kick win in July, and I took the time to visit him at his home gym, the Adrenaline Training Center in London, Ontario this week to get his vibe heading into Saturday’s fight.

Find out who “The Menace” picks in UFC 140 fights Jones vs Machida and Hominick vs Jung in the full interview video attached.

Here are some interview highlights:

What has he been up to since his last fight:

“I have a baby on the way.”

“I didn’t get too out of shape after the Briere fight. I was supposed to fight right away in October for The Score against Marcus Davis, but it kinda interfered with the wedding and I didn’t want to take a fight like that lightly. Then Shawn’s passing set us back again, so it just wasn’t a good time for me.”

On if he is back ready to face Clementi:

“I’m happy with the opponent. I just wanted a UFC vet, and Rich Clementi is a very well known UFC vet so that’s what I was looking for. I wanted to test my skills against a world-level opponent, so I’m happy that they found me someone like that.”

“The big difference is I was preparing for Forrest Petz, who is a striker and right handed, to one week’s notice now I gotta prepare for a left handed grappler pretty much, so it’s a big change up in the game plan. But all in all, I’m prepared for anyone, any time.”

On whether we will see a confident ground game:

“Yeah, I have a really good ground game, close to 70 percent of my training is on the ground. I don’t spend a lot of time on my striking, I was just kinda naturally good at it.”

“When I’m in a fight situation, I just see a chin and I want to hit it.”

On his fighter Jess Ronson and his match up with UFC veteran Tony Hervey:

“Tony Hervey is a very tricky guy, I’ve seen a lot of video on him. I’m also Jesse Ronson’s manager, so I had to accept the fight.”

“He’s a little bit more wild than Ronson, he may have a little bit more natural athleticism than Ronson, but Ronson’s so technically sound, his boxing and his kickboxing and he angles and stuff like that is just…technically sound will beat athleticism every time.”
