UFC lightweight contender Islam Makhachev doesn’t plan on revisiting his rivalry with Rafael dos Anjos if he emerges victorious against Dan Hooker at UFC 267.

In a similar fashion to his teammate Khabib Nurmagomedov’s matchup with Tony Ferguson, Makhachev’s feud with dos Anjos appears to be a cursed one that will never see the inside of the Octagon.

The Dagestani was originally set to face the former UFC Lightweight Champion at UFC 254 last October, a card headlined by Khabib’s final career appearance. After the Brazilian tested positive for COVID-19, the bout was postponed. The pairing was kept intact and was made the main event of a Fight Night event in November. Just six days before the headlining clash, Makhachev was forced to withdraw due to a staph infection.

After a victory for dos Anjos over Paul Felder, and two wins over Drew Dober and Thiago Moisés in 2021 for Makhachev, the top-10 lightweights were once again matched up against each other. Their previous failed attempts to meet in the cage, combined with the verbal jabs the pair took at each other on social media, made the anticipation for their UFC 267 fight high.

Perhaps proving that third time lucky is a myth, the booking collapsed yet again towards the end of last month. After undergoing surgery, dos Anjos pulled out of the event. In his place has stepped up Dan Hooker. Just days out from his UFC 266 victory over Nasrat Haqparast, “The Hangman” accepted the short-notice bout and will be looking to derail the Makhachev hype train in Abu Dhabi this Saturday.

Makhachev Closes The Door On Dos Anjos Rivalry

Makhachev will now be facing a higher ranked opponent on October 30. Along with many, the #5-ranked contender believes a victory over Hooker will secure his place opposite the champion in 2022. That’s despite fellow top five’s Justin Gaethje and Michael Chandler preparing to collide next weekend at UFC 268.

Ahead of his third Octagon outing of the year, Makhachev appeared at UFC 267 media day on Wednesday. The 30-year-old was asked whether he could see himself eventually facing dos Anjos after this weekend’s event. In response, Makhachev suggested he’d gain nothing from facing the Brazilian if he gets past Hooker.

“After this fight, I don’t think that dos Anjos is good idea for me. I have to (be) looking forward for someone from top three or if they give me title fight I’m gonna be ready.”

Makhachev had similar sentiments for Tony Ferguson, who he revealed was offered the short-notice UFC 267 bout but didn’t answer the call. It’s clear that with a victory at the Etihad Arena on Saturday, the surging lightweight contender will have his eyes set on a championship opportunity, or at the very least a title eliminator.

Should the winner of UFC 268’s Chandler vs. Gaethje fight earn the right to face the champ next, perhaps a clash with #3-ranked Beneil Dariush will be the next step for Makhachev.

Who would you like to see Islam Makhachev face if he defeats Dan Hooker this weekend?

Hooker: Makhachev Fight Is A Title Eliminator, Not Chandler/Gaethje

UFC lightweight contender Dan Hooker believes his upcoming fight with Islam Makhachev is more of a title eliminator than UFC 268’s Justin Gaethje vs. Michael Chandler clash. UFC lightweight contender Dan Hooker believes his upcoming fight with Islam Makhachev is more of a title eliminator than UFC 268’s Justin Gaethje vs. Michael Chandler clash.

Hooker was recently in action at UFC 266. At the September pay-per-view, he faced the unranked Nasrat Haqparast. After consecutive losses to Dustin Poirier and Chandler, “The Hangman” rebounded inside the T-Mobile Arena with a comfortable unanimous decision victory over his German opponent.

Just days out from his latest outing, which came after weeks of training and visa issues, Hooker accepted a short-notice opportunity against one of the most highly touted names in the division, Makhachev. The Russian was initially slated to fight bitter rival Rafael dos Anjos at UFC 267 this weekend. After the Brazilian withdrew through injury, Hooker stepped up to face the #5-ranked lightweight contender in Abu Dhabi.

Ahead of this month’s non-pay-per-view numbered event, Hooker has suggested his matchup with the surging Dagestani is likely a number one contender bout. That’s despite the general consensus seemingly following the idea that the November 6 contest between former title challengers Gaethje and Chandler holds that status.

During an interview with It’s Time For Sports, “The Hangman” said that despite not receiving confirmation of it from the UFC, he “feels” as if the winner of his UFC 267 main card fight will compete for the 155-pound gold. The New Zealander believes his matchup with Makhachev is more of a title eliminator than the blockbuster lightweight showdown set for Madison Square Garden next month.

“They’ll never put that in writing. That’s not something that they do. It’s more just a feeling. I feel like this is a title eliminator more than the Chandler fight [vs. Gaethje]. Like, I was more uncertain about whether me vs. Michael Chandler was a title eliminator than this fight [vs. Makhachev].”

According to Hooker, the classification of his fight as a title eliminator comes from the stock the promotion is putting into Makhachev. He believes a victory for the American Kickboxing Academy product would certainly see him challenge for the lightweight belt next. With that in mind, the #6-ranked contender doesn’t see why he wouldn’t be afforded the same treatment should he defeat the 30-year-old on October 30.

“The amount of stock they’re putting into Islam, they’re setting him up for a title, like, 100%. And that’s just not how a title eliminator works. You can’t have a title eliminator where one guy wins and he gets a title [shot] and the other guy doesn’t. That’s not a title eliminator. So, I feel like when I get the job done, that’s what’s next for me.”

Makhachev Is Top-5 Pound-For-Pound In The UFC

Dominance MMA CEO Ali Abdelaziz believes UFC lightweight Islam Makhachev sits among the top-five pound-for-pound best in the entire promotion. Dominance MMA CEO Ali Abdelaziz believes UFC lightweight Islam Makhachev sits among the top-five pound-for-pound best in the entire promotion.

Makhachev has experienced a rapid rise towards the top of the 155-pound rankings. Since suffering his only career loss at the hands of Adriano Martins in 2015, the Dagestani has built an impressive eight-fight win streak that includes victories over Nik Lentz, Gleison Tibau, Arman Tsarukyan, Davi Ramos, Drew Dober, and Thiago Moisés

The 30-year-old American Kickboxing Academy product secured his first UFC main event following his triumph over Dober earlier this year. In the UFC Vegas 31 headliner, he faced ranked lightweight Moisés. After a comfortable three rounds, Makhachev submitted the Brazilian in the fourth frame. Despite defeating the #14 man in the division while he was sat at #9, the Russian found himself inside the 155-pound top five following the next rankings update.

While many questioned the four-place rise up the lightweight ladder, especially considering Makhachev is yet to defeat a top-10 contender, the former combat sambo world champion’s manager believes a place in the upper echelons of his division still doesn’t do justice to the Dagestani’s abilities inside the Octagon.

Speaking during a recent interview with ESPN MMA’s Brett Okamoto, prominent personality Ali Abdelaziz gave his thoughts on his client’s title credentials. As well as stating that Makhachev is a future champion, the 43-year-old suggested the Russian is one of the top-five P4P best fighters in the UFC.

“Everybody don’t wanna talk about him. But I tell you today, I’m not talking about lightweight division, if you do the pound-for-pound rankings today, I will rank Islam [in] the pound-for-pound top five in the UFC; the whole UFC. The lightweight division know, the UFC know, the media know, but everybody will know very soon how good Islam is.

“I think right now, he’s a problem. If I was a fighter right now, I don’t wanna fight him, for what? You know, why am I gonna need to get half my check? He’s a problem for the division. I feel before all said and done, he’ll be a champion.”

Makhachev will have the chance to further prove his dominance in the cage when he returns to action in Abu Dhabi later this month. He was originally scheduled to clash with bitter rival Rafael dos Anjos at the UFC 267 event. However, due to injury, the former UFC Lightweight Champion was forced to withdraw.

On short notice, and just days removed from his victory over Nasrat Haqparast at UFC 266, Dan Hooker stepped in to replace the Brazilian. Whilst Makhachev’s friend and teammate Khabib Nurmagomedov doesn’t believe “The Hangman” has a chance, the New Zealander is confident in his ability to cause an upset come October 30, and says he won’t bring any short-notice excuses into the main card contest.

UFC lightweight Dan Hooker is hoping to “outclass” Islam Makhachev at UFC 267, rather than catch him with a submission or knockout shot.

Hooker’s reputation as an always-game and tough contender has been exponentially enhanced over the past month. In September, the New Zealander overcame extreme adversity to make it into the Octagon at UFC 266. Ahead of his clash with Nasrat Haqparast, “The Hangman” experienced run-ins with his country’s police over his inability to train at his own empty gym due to lockdown restrictions, was unable to prepare alongside his teammates, and struggled to secure a US visa. After a rough few weeks, Hooker arrived in Las Vegas just one day before the weigh-ins. Nevertheless, he made weight and delivered a mature and intelligent performance against his German opponent.

Having rebounded from his prior defeats to Dustin Poirier and Michael Chandler, the expectation was for Hooker to return to New Zealand and perhaps pursue a future move to the US. Amazingly, the #6-ranked lightweight instead accepted a clash with the surging Makhachev just days out from his latest UFC outing.

After Rafael dos Anjos withdrew due to injury, the opportunity for Hooker to earn another pay check in Abu Dhabi later this month wasn’t one he was going to turn down. He’ll challenge the dominance of Dagestan’s latest sensation at UFC 267 next weekend.

Despite facing one of the most highly touted contenders in the 155-pound division, and having barely a month to prepare, Hooker is confident he can get the job done on October 30, and says he won’t bring an short-notice excuses into the fight. But Makhachev’s team doesn’t appear to be taking any threat from their man’s new opponent seriously.

Both Khabib Nurmagomedov and American Kickboxing Academy head coach Javier Mendez recently suggested Hooker doesn’t have what it takes to defeat Makhachev across three rounds. “The Eagle” claimed the only way his friend and compatriot could lose is through a “lucky punch.”

Responding during an appearance at UFC Vegas 41 media day, Hooker said that not only is he capable of beating Makhachev, but he’d rather outclass him and secure a dominant decision than land a fortunate punch or catch the Russian in a submission.

“I can beat him, I can beat him. That’s like, a fact. That’s like, how I’d prefer the fight to go, is to not catch him in a submission, not catch him with a knee or anything like that, and beat him. I feel like that [a complete 15-minute performance], over snatching his neck or catching him with a knee is like… will make me feel better on the inside, give me a warm feeling in my belly. Just to like, prove everyone… that will really shut everyone up if I go out there and just outclass him. Then what’s everyone gonna say?”

Hooker added that in his mind, he actually has more ways to win than Makhachev. While “The Hangman” believes he can finish anyone on the feet or on the ground, he doesn’t see the Dagestani being able to defeat him in any way other than on the scorecards.

“Go out there and prove where your grappling lies in the division and make him look a bit silly. That’s my intention and like, my plan for the fight. That’s the only way he’s going to beat me, is by a decision. I feel like he’s gonna try and hold me down for two rounds, and that’s the plan. That will be their plan coming into the fight,” added Hooker. “He’s not like, a big ground-and-pound guy, he’s not a really slick submission specialist. It’s more like, pressuring guys and tiring them out and forcing them to give up a submission, as opposed to being like a Charles Oliveira, like a real slick submission specialist that throws up all these different submission attempts and catches guys.”

Who do you think will have their hand raised at UFC 267, Dan Hooker or Islam Makhachev?

Makhachev Responds To Five-Round Proposal, Hooker Sees It As A Yes

UFC lightweight contender Islam Makhachev has responded to Dan Hooker’s five-round proposal for UFC 267, which “The Hangman” has perceived to be an acceptance of the challenge. UFC lightweight contender Islam Makhachev has responded to Dan Hooker’s five-round proposal for UFC 267, which “The Hangman” has perceived to be an acceptance of the challenge.

Makhachev was originally slated to fight bitter rival Rafael dos Anjos on October 30. However, due to recent surgery, the former UFC Lightweight Champion was forced to withdraw from the UFC’s non-pay-per-view numbered event. In his place stepped up Hooker. Just days out from his three-round clash with Nasrat Haqparast at UFC 266, which ended in a unanimous decision victory for the New Zealander, Hooker accepted a short-notice clash with one of the promotion’s fastest-rising title contenders.

As if accepting a short-notice bout against one of the most dangerous and feared men in the 155-pound weight class wasn’t enough, Hooker recently suggested their fight fight be moved from three rounds to five.

Hooker’s proposal came after members of Makhachev’s camp doubted “The Hangman” and his chances of victory this weekend. The Dagestani’s friend and teammate Khabib Nurmagomedov recently suggested the only way his compatriot could lose is through a “lucky punch.”

Having previously responded to “The Eagle” and those doubting him by claiming he “can knock out or submit any man in this world,” Hooker has doubled down on his confidence by revealing his willingness to enter the cage with the #5-ranked lightweight for 25 minutes.

In response, Makhachev took to Twitter to suggest Hooker’s request would create a far worse scenario for the Auckland-born 31-year-old.

“It’s worse for you,” wrote Makhachev.

Having recently defeated Thiago Moisés in the fourth round of his first scheduled five-round bout in the UFC, Makhachev clearly believes he’d have the edge over 25 minutes at UFC 267.

However, Dan Hooker is no stranger to five-round battles. “The Hangman” went the 25-minute distance in back-to-back wars against Paul Felder and Dustin Poirier last year. During a recent appearance on Submission Radio, the 31-year-old explained why he requested for his matchup with Makhachev to be moved to five frames.

“Let’s do it. I just feel good, man. I feel like there was a couple of really hard weeks getting back into it, getting back into the swing of things, and by that I mean getting the rounds in with the bodies, getting the sparring in, getting the wrestling in. (I’ve been) wrestling everyday, conditioning every second day, and it was a real grind there for a couple of weeks. And then that last week just come on, man, just felt good, felt the fitness was there; wrestling for, you know, wrestling for 45 minutes straight and feeling good, feeling sharp, feeling fresh, feeling like everything was technically there.

“I feel like a five-rounder… if we can make that happen, I’m 100% in. Let’s make it five. I feel like people are intrigued by this matchup, as intrigued as the co-main and main, so let’s do it justice.”

Discussing Makhachev’s short response to the proposal, Hooker suggested he perceives it to be “a yes” from the Dagestani. He made it clear that if the increased fight length doesn’t come to fruition, it’s either down to the promotion or Makhachev’s unwillingness.

“That’s a yes, that’s, ‘That sounds good to me,’ that’s a yes. That’s him calling my bluff and me going all in. That’s me backing my hand and going all in. If that’s his response then let’s do it. What’s the hold up? Let’s make it five rounds… let’s push Sean Shelby (and) Dana White, let’s do this fight justice… let’s make it 25 minutes, let’s get after it, let’s see who really is the better fighter when we get out there.”

Dan Hooker is ready to push Islam Makhachev to his absolute limits.

Hooker proved his toughness for the rest of eternity by turning around after beating Nasrat Haqparast a month earlier, so he can fight to fight the boogeyman of the lightweight division and Khabib protege Makhachev. This is a man that seemingly no one wants to fight, so for “The Hangman” to agree to replace a withdrawing Rafael Dos Anjos, while giving up the ability to return to New Zealand, is without a doubt gangster stuff.

However, just in case you were still unsure about how tough he is or his willingness to accept a challenge, Hooker has decided to up the ante. Posting to his Twitter, he issued a challenger the to Makhachev, trying to turn their UFC 267 featured bout into a five round fight, following the likes of the Diaz brothers, who have set a precedent for these kinds of things.

“Let’s make it 5 rounds? ?” Hooker wrote.

It is hard to know if the UFC would be willing to go for this notion, as there are only two fights in UFC history that have been five-round, non-title bouts, and they both involved a Diaz brother. Nevertheless, you have to absolutely respect Dan Hooker for calling for this to happen, especially against an opponent like Islam Makhachev. And if the promotion does decide to make it happen, it would make the fight significantly closer.

Do you want to see Hooker vs Makhachev turn into a five-round fight? Or is it better served as a three-round contest?
