Leon Edwards believes he and Islam Makhachev have some work to do before meeting up for a superfight inside the Octagon.
On Saturday night (June 1), the ‘Dagestani Destroyer’ bagged his third successful lightweight title defense and his first against a legitimate contender at 155 when he submitted division fan favorite Dustin Poirier in the fifth round of their entertaining clash at UFC 302.
Following the contest, Makhachev voiced his desire to move up to 170 in an attempt to dethrone reigning welterweight titleholder Leon Edwards, becoming a two-division champion in the process.
Reacting to Makhachev’s declaration during a recent interview with Sky Sports, ‘Rocky’ refused to rule out a future fight with Makhachev, but made it clear that they still have plenty of work to do in their own weight classes.
“I’d welcome it. I think we both have work to do within our divisions,” Edwards said of a clash with Makhachev. “He just fought his first lightweight, actual lightweight, first defense. I feel like he’s got a few more lightweights he’s gotta go through first, before even thinking about moving up…
Leon Edwards recognizes the ‘massive’ potential of a fight with Islam makhachev
Of course, Edwards recognizes that a showdown with Makhachev would be a massive money-making fight, but before he can look forward to that matchup, he’ll have to take care of some outstanding business with No. 1 ranked welterweight contender Belal Muhammad.
“It’s a massive fight. Feel like I’ve got work to do within my division first, then the super fights will come,” Edwards added.
If not Leon Edwards, a fight with Arman Tsarukyan is likely next for Makhachev. ‘Ahalkalakets’ established himself as the next man in line with a split decision victory over ex-lightweight champion Charles Oliveira at UFC 300 in April. The victory moved his unbeaten streak to four, including wins over Beneil Dariush, Joaquim Silva, and Beneil Dariush

Former interim lightweight champion, Dustin Poirier reportedly entered his UFC 302 title fight with Islam Makhachev over the course of the weekend with a lingering rib injury, according to former lightweight star, Yves Edwards – limiting his ability to wrestle or grapple in preparation for the bout.
Poirier, a former interim lightweight titleholder and the current number four ranked division contender, headlined UFC 302 over the course of last weekend against pound-for-pound number one, Makhachev – eventually succumbing to a fifth round submission.
“The way he (Dustin Poirier) performed on Saturday night, that was super impressive to me,” Yves Edwards said on MMA Today. “Nobody knows this and he probably is gonna be like, ‘Man, why’d you put that out there?’ But like, I know (Islam) Makhachev was also not 100 percent, nobody goes into a fight 100 percent, but he hurt his ribs two weeks before the fight and hadn’t wrestled or grappled for two and a half weeks.”
“I probably shouldn’t [reveal that], but to me it’s so impressive against that guy,” Edwards explained. “Against somebody else, it wouldn’t matter. Against that guy, Islam, man, you wrestled like that against that guy with hurt ribs. I’m impressed.”
What’s your thoughts on Dustin Poirier’s performance at UFC 302?

Stephen A. Smith believes Conor McGregor has “no business” being inside the Octagon with a grappler. Especially when that grappler’s name is Islam Makhachev.
On Saturday (June 1) the ‘Dagestani Destroyer’ successfully retained his lightweight world title, dispatching division fan favorite Dustin Poirier in the fifth round via submission, extending his unbeaten streak to 14 straight and further establishing himself as the No. 1 ranked pound-for-pound fighter in the world — even if Dana White doesn’t agree.
Being the protege of Octagon icon Khabib Nurmagomedov, Makhachev has a natural enemy in Conor McGregor. In the weeks leading up to UFC 302, both men have taken jabs at one another on social media and in interviews, with McGregor being especially nasty toward his former foe’s successor.
Their continued back-and-forth has only further fueled rumors that the two could end up going toe-to-toe inside the Octagon one day.
While that fight seems rather unlikely with both men on very different career trajectories, money talks, and the UFC is in the business of making money. And nobody makes more money than ‘Mystic Mac.’
Stephen A. Smith is confident makhachev would finish McGregor ‘inside of two rounds’
Joining host Molly Qerim on ESPN’s First Take, Stephen A. Smith was adamantly opposed to the idea of McGregor squaring off with Makhachev, claiming that it would be “the worst possible fight” for the Irish megastar.
“Conor McGregor has no business being in the Octagon against a grappler, which is what Makhachev… This brother right here is something special and he’s not going to try and strike against McGregor,” Smith said. “Just like he tried on numerous occasions to get [Dustin] Poirier to the ground [at UFC 302] before successfully doing so with that ankle wrap and ultimately getting him.
“That’s exactly what he’s going to do with McGregor. His whole objective is going to be about getting him to the ground. I think it’s the worst possible fight we could possibly want to see in the UFC. There’s is no purpose whatsoever.
“We should literally protest if they try to put [Islam] Makhachev in the Octagon against Conor McGregor because I believe that fight would be over inside of two rounds. He’ll get Conor to submit, it’s that simple. That’s not the fight we want to see. We want to see someone that’s going to try and knock Conor out and Conor try to knock them out. We don’t want to see a grappler inside the Octagon against Conor McGregor because chances are, it’s going to end soon.”

Off the back of his thrilling title fight win against common-foe, Dustin Poirier at UFC 302 over the weekend, Islam Makhachev has been urged to chase a fight with ex-champion, Conor McGregor next by his head coach, Javier Mendez.
Makhachev, the incumbent lightweight titleholder, headlined UFC 302 over the weekend in New Jersey, turning in the third successful defense of his crown with an impressive win against former interim champion, Poirier.
Islam Makhachev backed to fight Conor McGregor soon
And staking his claim for a welterweight title siege off the back of his lightweight title defense at UFC 302, Makhachev should consider a fight with the polarizing former two-weight champion, McGregor – according to his coach, Mendez.
“Conor (McGregor) starts and goes on a rank, starting to create drama with Islam (Makhachev),” Javier Mendez told Red Corner MMA. “Which is kind of good because Conor’s the kind of guy you want to root against or root for. Regardless, everybody wants to see him, Me, I want to see him get beat by Islam.”
So, for me, him doing what he’s doing is causing a lot of attention so there wouldn’t be nothing better for me and Khabib (Nurmagomedov) than to have Islam have a fight with him somewhere down the line,” Mendez explained. “He brought that staph [infection] up, which is very observant on his part, to be honest with you. The only thing is that he observed it way too late. At the time he mentioned it, it was already three weeks past.”
As for McGregor, speculation has been rife overnight regarding the Dubliner’s return later this month at UFC 303, with the organization confirming a press conference between himself and opponent, Michael Chandler – set to take place this evening, had been postponed at the 3Arena.
