Dana White has shut down Arman Tsarukyan’s calls for an interim UFC lightweight title to be created while champion Islam Makhachev recovers from a hand injury. Makhachev and Tsarukyan were originally expected to run it back for the former’s gold at the upcoming UFC 308 pay-per-view in Abu Dhabi next month. But a physical issue […]

Surging number one ranked lightweight contender, Arman Tsarukyan has claimed that talks have been held regarding a potential end-of-year rematch with undisputed champion, Islam Makhachev — with the two failing to land on an October UFC 308 card to battle once more.
Tsarukyan, the current number one ranked divisional contender, most recently featured on the main card of UFC 300 back in April, landing a controversial split decision win over former undisputed champion, Charles Oliveira over the course of three rounds.
Earning himself a title rematch with Makhachev off the back of his win, Armenian contender, Tsarukyan saw a targeted rematch with the former ruled from a UFC 308 card in Abu Dhabi, UAE later this annum — with the Russian dealing with an unspecified arm injury.
Arman Tsarukyan reveals potential December rematch with Islam Makhachev
However, according to Tsarukyan — who has been linked with an interim title fight against the above-mentioned, Oliveira as well as former champion, Dustin Poirier if Makhachev remained sidelined, a potential rematch with the undisputed champion has been floated for December.
“The fight [with Islam Makhachev] had to happen in October,” Arman Tsarukyan told Ushatayka’s Islam Babadzhanov, during a recent interview. “But it was rescheduled, now we have talks about December.”
“It depends on when he can return,” Arman Tsarukyan said of the chances he would take an interim lightweight title fight next. “If he can’t compete by Spring, I think they [the UFC] will make a fight for an interim title.
Sidelined since he took main event honors at UFC 302 back in May in Newark, New Jersey, pound-for-pound number one, Makhachev most recently took on Tsarukyan’s American Top Team stablemate, Dustin Poirier.
Successfully defending his undisputed title for the third time since February of last year, Makhachev turned in a fifth round D’Arce choke submission win over the Louisiana veteran in the pair’s main event title showdown.

Ahead of his own return at Noche UFC later this year, undisputed bantamweight champion, Sean O’Malley claims fellow champion, Islam Makhachev is the cream of the crop within the promotion — beating out current heavyweight champion, Jon Jones amid his continued sidelining from the Octagon.
As for Makhachev, the undisputed lightweight champion is sidelined from the Octagon amid an unspecified amr injury — ruling him from a planned title rematch with the streaking, Arman Tsarukyan at UFC 308 at the end of October in Abu Dhabi, UAE.
And for Rochester veteran, Jones, the current heavyweight titleholder is all but signed to take on the returning former champion, Stipe Miocic at UFC 309 in November at Madison Square Garden — snapping his hiatus from the Octagon dating back to March of last year.
Sean O’Malley heaps praise on Islam Makhachev
Sharing his thoughts on the current lie of the land in the pound-for-pound rankings amid backing of Jones from UFC CEO, Dana White — Sean O’Malley claims Makhachev should rightfully take the crown as the best fighter in the promotion right now.
“Greatest fighter right now? Probably Islam (Makhachev),” Sean O’Malley told Helen Yee during a recent interview. “I think (Jon) Jones has fought once in last four, five years, Jon Jones is up there of the greatest of all-time but fight now, who is the greatest? Like who has been active last four years or whatever, I think its Islam but Jon Jones is always going to be in the conversation.”
In his most recent outing, Montana striker, O’Malley managed to avenge his sole professional defeat back in March, landing a one-sided unanimous decision win over Marlon Vera in the pair’s title fight rematch.
Dan Hooker believes the UFC lightweight division’s reputation as an all-action weight class has been hampered by the rise of a few names. Hooker is among the most notable names set to be in action at this weekend’s UFC 305 pay-per-view, set to go down inside the RAC Arena in Perth, Australia. The New Zealander […]
His frequent calls to secure a spot on the upcoming card Down Under were eventually answered in the form of a showdown with top-five contender Mateusz Gamrot. “The Hangman” will enter as a sizable underdog against “Gamer,” who has come under criticism in recent times for his control-heavy fight style.
And more than just Gamrot, the lightweight veteran believes a number of names high up the ladder took over the division by stifling those who have long kept up its reputation as an entertaining roster.
Hooker: Oliveira, Poirier, Gaethje, & Others ‘Stifled’ By Lightweight Grabbers
During a recent interview on the FREESTYLEBENDER YouTube channel, Hooker looked ahead to his opportunity to climb back into title contention at 155 pounds and assessed the current state of the weight class’ top five.
“The Hangman” put his upcoming opponent alongside champion Islam Makhachev and top contender Arman Tsarukyan as three names who moved toward the lightweight mountaintop by smothering any and all exciting styles.
“I guess it’s like the elites — not necessarily the elites, but lightweight is such a stacked division, there’s so many exciting fighters, (Charles) Oliveira, (Justin) Gaethje, (Dustin) Poirier, (Jalin) Turner, (Michael) chandler; there’s a lot of very exciting fighters within that,” Hooker said. “But now you can see the guys that — because obviously being an exciting fighter, wanting to go out there and perform, put on a show, put on an incredible fight for the fans, you need the other guy to oblige.
“If I go out there and say, ‘I just wanna go out there, slang some leather, put on an exciting fight,’ and the other guy’s plan is to just grab ahold of me and stifle me until he wins, then he’s gonna win,” Hooker continued. “I feel like the top echelon of the lightweight division now with Islam, Arman, and Gamrot is the guys that have just stifled the division. That’s why the lightweight division is in such a weird place now. These guys have been able to stifle the exciting guys.”
Hooker will look to put a stop to that trend and avoid being “stifled” by Gamrot at UFC 305 this Saturday night (Sunday morning local time).

UFC lightweight champion Islam Makhachev has made it very clear that competing at a higher weight class is in his future plans.
The pound-for-pound #1 wants to add a second belt to his collection after giving Alexander Volkanovski the opportunity to do the same on two occasions.
Having had a behind the scenes look at one of Makhachev’s earlier UFC fight weeks, Ricky Glenn is surprised that it hasn’t happened already.
Makhachev’s coach and long-time teammate Khabib Nurmagomedov cut a lot of weight in order to make 155-pounds and it caused issues at points in his career.
Whilst the current champion hasn’t had too many concerns in recent years, Glenn recently recalled his experiences of watching what he would put himself through to make the 155 pound limit.
Ricky Glenn Recalls Watching Islam Makhachev Train Like A ‘Zombie’ During Tough Weight Cut
Glenn is set to return this weekend at UFC 305 where he will compete at welterweight for the first time in his UFC career against Song Kenan.
When giving his thoughts on Makhachev’s current title reign, Glenn recalled how he previously shared a training room with him during fight week for the Iowa native’s UFC debut back in 2016.
He said that he wouldn’t be surprised to see someone stop the current champion in the future if he remains at lightweight, with what he puts his body through to make the weight.
In fact, this fight week that Glenn was reflecting on saw Makhachev bounce back from his one and only career defeat, when he was knocked out by Adriano Martins at UFC 192.
“He’s just on a whole other level and he cuts a lot of weight. I’m surprised he hasn’t moved up because man, I’ve shared a training room with him. I think it was, it might have been my debut fight, he fought Chris [Wade] but days before weigh-ins and just zaps. Could barely move and they’re just throwing punches like this fast, it’s just super slow, like a zombie.
“But, he makes the weight somehow and can recover but I’d be worried eventually if he can’t recover good enough, someone’s going to TKO or knock him out I think with cutting that much weight. It’s impressive how much he cuts and fills back up.”
