Despite seemingly all but penned to fight lightweight champion, Islam Makhachev in a title rematch at UFC 294 in October in Abu Dhabi, UAE, former division champion, Charles Oliveira has admitted the Middle Eastern turnaround is “too soon” for him, eyeing a fight in either November or December instead.
Oliveira, the current number one ranked lightweight contender, most recently featured in the co-main event of UFC 289 back in June in Vancouver, Canada, appearing to earn his championship rematch with Russian finisher, Makhachev, stopping the run of Beneil Dariush with a first round TKO victory.
Having previously shared the Octagon with American Kickboxing Academy staple, Makhachev back in October of last year in the main event of UFC 280, Oliveira saw his division-best 12-fight winning run come to a halt after dropping an arm-triangle submission loss to the former in the pair’s vacant title outing.
Charles Oliveira confirms he is unlikely to fight Islam Makhachev at UFC 294
Initially calling for an October championship re-run with Makhachev, Sao Paulo native, Oliveira admitted during an interview with TSN reporter, Aaron Bronsteter, that he is unable to make a turnaround and fight Makhachev at UFC 284 in October.
“So, I’m gonna honest with you,” Charles Oliveira said through a translator.” We don’t have nothing yet – we still are waiting. But, to be honest, October is too soon for me. It’s too soon – especially if the fight is gonna be there [in Abu Dhabi]. I’m really going to be ready in November or December, but October is too soon. We don’t have nothing yet.”
Questioned if he would be willing to lay in wait for a future title affair, Oliveira stressed that he would be ready to fight at the end of the year instead.
“I just need to wait, I’m a UFC employee, so I just need to wait,” Charles Oliveira explained through a translator. “For me, it doesn’t matter. The one thing I can tell you, I’m not ready for a fight in October, but in November or December, I will be ready. I’m just waiting, so let’s see what they’re (UFC) going to do.”

Ahead of his UFC 290 headliner this weekend in his featherweight title unification outing, Alexander Volkanovski has announced plans to potentially make a quickfire return at UFC 294 in October, calling for a title rematch with Islam Makhachev at the lightweight limit.
Sidelined since he headlined UFC 284 back in February in Perth, Australia, Volkanovski suffered his first promotional loss on home soil, dropping a close, hard-fought unanimous decision defeat to Russian grappler, Makhachev in his lightweight division bow.
Alexander Volkanovski welcomes turnaround against Islam Makhachev in October
And ahead of his championship outing with Rodríguez at UFC 290 this Saturday, New South Wales technician, Alexander Volkanovski has weighed up the option of making a return in October, in a rematch against champion, Makhachev.
“I think so – let’s be real, everyone wants that rematch,” Alexander Volkanovski said of a UFC 294 turnaround against Islam Makhachev during an interview on The MMA Hour. “I want it, I know the UFC wants it, and we just gotta see exactly what’s gonna happen, but that’s what I want to do . I want to be active, so bring it on.” (H/T MMA News)
Himself expected to headline in the promotion’s return to Abu Dhabi, UAE, Makhachev managed to strike vacant lightweight gold in the Octagon’s last outing in the Middle East – stopping the 12-fight winning run of former undisputed champion, Charles Oliveira with a stunning second round arm-triangle submission win.
And expected to meet with the Sao Paulo native in a championship re-run at UFC 294 in October, Makhachev has yet to be officially booked with an opponent for the pay-per-view outing.

Despite walking into Saturday’s UFC 290 main event as a three-to-one underdog, Yair Rodriguez is being touted as the toughest test yet for reigning featherweight world champion Alexander Volkanovski.
After scoring a second-round submission over Josh Emmett to capture the interim featherweight title, Rodriguez will attempt to trade up for undisputed gold against the No. 2 ranked pound-for-pound fighter in the world. Virtually everyone has picked Volkanovski to come out on top inside T-Mobile Arena, but popular play-by-play man Jon Anik expects ‘El Pantera’ to give Volkanovski a real run for his money during International Fight Week.
“Yair Rodriguez is the f*cking man,” Anik told MMA Fighting. “Dominick Cruz coined him ‘one of one,’ and I’m not sure that more appropriate words have ever been used to describe an athlete. I have no point of comparison when it comes to Yair Rodriguez. I absolutely think he’s going to be competitive against Alexander Volkanovski.”
Anik Sees No Need to Rush Into Volkanovski vs. Makhachev Rematch Following Fight with Yair Rodriguez
Yair Rodriguez captured the interim 145-pound crown at UFC 284, the same night that Alexander Volkanovski attempted to become a two-division world champion, challenging Islam Makhachev for the lightweight championship. The Dagestani destroyer came out on top via a unanimous decision that was scrutinized by fans and fighters alike. The somewhat controversial result left the door wide open for a rematch, but Jon Anik believes there’s no need to rush into running back their Fight of the Year contender.
“I feel like with the Makhachev-Volkanovski rematch, you can let that marinate a little bit,” Anik said. “I don’t think it’s out of the realm of possibility that that fight could materialize even three or four years down the line. I just think with the wealth of talent you have right now at 145 and 155, it’s not a strike-while-the-iron-is-hot situation. I do believe that it’s ambitious just to think that Volkanovski is going to get completely through Yair unscathed and turn it around in October.
“Only thing I would say is that when we did sit down with Alex to begin the year, he said he wanted to fight four times in 2023, and I certainly believe — to quote Michael Chandler — that Volkanovski is here for a good time and not a long time,” Anik continued. “I really think he’s trying to put training camps together and realize these paydays and not be fighting into his 40s. So I think we have to enjoy Volanovski while we can, and I wouldn’t be surprised to see him try for a quick turn even if it’s a hard fight in July.”
Islam Makhachev is aiming for a return to action this October when the promotion heads back to Abu Dhabi for UFC 294. Alexander Volkanvski has exhibited an interest in making a quick turnaround to compete at the event, but don’t expect to see their highly anticipated rematch booked just yet. Makhachev is currently slated for a lightweight title defense against former foe Charles Oliveira or possibly the winner of this month’s UFC 291 headliner between Dustin Poirier and Justin Gaethje.
As for Volkanovski’s next title defense, should he get past Yair Rodriguez on Saturday night, could come against 14-0 standout Ilia Topuria. ‘El Matador’ earned a decisive unanimous decision win over Josh Emmett last month, thrusting himself into the division’s top five and potentially establishing himself as the next man in line for a title opportunity.

Off the back of his third consecutive victory in the co-main event of UFC Vegas 76 last night, streaking lightweight contender, Grant Dawson has issued a stark warning to division champion, Islam Makhachev – describing himself as the Russian’s eventual “replacement” atop the weight class.
Dawson, a staple of American Top Team under the tutelage of Mike Brown, turned in a hugely-dominant unanimous decision win over the highly-touted, Damir Ismagulov – adding to a run of prior wins over both Mark O. Madsen, and Jared Gordon – submitting the pair with rear-naked chokes stoppages.
Boasting a stunning nine-fight undefeated run with the promotion, Dawson, who’s sole outing without a win came in the form of a close, majority draw outing against Ricky Glenn back in 2021 – had landed consecutive wins over Julian Erosa, Michael Trizano, Darrick Minner, Nad Narimani, and Leonardo Santos following his move from Dana White’s Contender Series.
Grant Dawson issues warning to champion, Islam Makhachev
Currently clinching the number fifteen ranking in the official lightweight pile, Dawson issued a warning to Makhachev following his UFC Vegas 76 win over Ismagulov.
“Islam Makhachev, you are the GOAT, but I am your replacement,” Grant Dawson told UFC color-commentator, Michael Bisping during his post-fight Octagon interview.”
Winning vacant lightweight gold back in October of last year against former champion, Charles Oliveira, Makhachev submitted the Brazilian with a second round arm-triangle choke.
Returning to the Octagon at UFC 284 back in February, Makhachev turned in his first successful title defense with a close, unanimous decision win over featherweight champion, Alexander Volkanovski.
Yet to be booked for his return to the Octagon – Makhachev is expected to headline UFC 294 in October in Abu Dhabi, UAE – taking on the aforenoted, Oliveira in a title re-run in his return to the Middle East.

UFC lightweight superstar Arman Tsarukyan is now hungry for a rematch with the current lightweight champion Islam Makhachev at UFC 294.
Tsarukyan was last seen in action fighting at UFC Vegas 75 less than two weeks ago. Tsarukyan would call out Makhavhev in his post-fight interview and would exit the cage with another impressive finish on his resume. He was leaving the arena with a clear statement made that he is indeed ready for title contention after his terrific performance against Joaquim Silva.
MMA journalist James Lynch had the time to catch up with Tsarukyan after the madness that was UFC Vegas 55 on behalf of LowKick MMA. In their interview, ‘Ahalkalakets’ described just how badly he wanted the rematch with Makhachev.
“That fight makes sense,” Tsarukyan told Lynch. “I think just me (only I) can beat him in this division. It’s my opinion ya know. I wanna get that fight and that’s why I gotta call him (out) all the time after fights.”
Arman Tsarukyan talks about a potential Islam Makhachev rematch at UFC 294
“It’s like almost (a) dream fight for me now,” Arman Tsarukyan continued. “All of my focus is to be a champion. That’s why I called him out. And we’ll see, maybe next year we’re gonna fight with each other. And, I want to see my improvements. I want to see my skills. And that fight, I think that’s the most competitive fight for me.”
When asked about how the rematch would go, Tsarukyan was very confident about his improvement. He pretty much explained how in his opinion, he beats Makhachev in every aspect. He mentioned how some fans believe Makhachev will dominate him and reign victorious over him once more, but Tsarukyan isn’t very worried. He simply said everybody is entitled to their own opinions, and he hopes to be able to prove himself and test his abilities against the UFC lightweight champion in what would be an epic rematch.
How do you think Arman Tsarukyan will fair against Islam Makhachev?
