It’s clear who Jon Jones is backing in the upcoming middleweight title fight between Robert Whittaker and Israel Adesanya.

Jones was recently doing some promotional work for UFC 239. He will defend his light heavyweight title against Thiago Santos on July 6 headlining International Fight Week. During a segment, Jones was asked for his thoughts on middleweight champion Robert Whittaker.

“Bones” called Whittaker a “stand-up guy” and said he wants to see him “stomp a mudhole” in interim 170-pound champion Israel Adesanya when they fight. Whittaker shared the clip on his Instagram, captioning it with, “Nothing but respect mate!” Here’s what Jones had to say:

“Real deal,” Jones said. “I’ve got nothing but respect for him. He’s just like a stand-up guy. I can’t wait to see him stomp a mudhole in Adesanya.”

It’s no secret that Jones and Adesanya have issues with one another. It’s believed the pair could eventually matchup with one another in the coming years. For now, Adesanya is expected to attempt and unify his 185-pound crown with Whittaker’s at UFC 243 on pay-per-view (PPV) in October.

In a follow-up comment on Whittaker’s post, Jones also volunteered to help Whittaker train for his fight against “Stylebender”:

“Just keeping it real, would be honored to train with you leading up to your fight. Let’s get you more than ready”

Jon Jones and Israel Adesanya have teased quite the beef over the past few months.

The interim UFC middleweight champion believes he’ll one day jump up in weight to take out “Bones.” Jones was asked whether or not he has a real problem with Adesanya during his appearance on “The Ariel Helwani MMA Show” earlier today (Mon. June 24, 2019), admitting he really doesn’t see the Nigerian as much of a threat:

“I really don’t,” Jones said. “I really don’t. I think the worst thing I ever said about the kid was that he’s looking promising and I would assume that people are going to start entertaining that fight soon and he’ll come up and challenge me. That’s all I said about him. And I think he said something about killing one GOAT in Anderson Silva, and now trying to kill me.

“Or some sh*t like that. The biggest difference is that, I’m 31-years-old, and I feel like I’m still reaching my prime. If you look back throughout a lot of my fights, you hear a lot of guys say ‘Jon is a lot stronger than he looks.’ And Israel is light in the ass, he’s light, he’s skinny. I put my hands on him and teach him a whole different world of hurt. For him to be so frail and to not have a ground game, it’s like, bro, you don’t want to do it.

“And then to talk about my standup against Anthony Smith, with his face all bubbled up against a short wrestler [Kelvin Gastelum] that just did that to him. It’s just hilarious. I barely get touched in my fights. And so, for Israel to talk about his striking skills being so farther ahead of mine is hilarious. Just something when I think about him I think about he’s a little too light in the ass, he needs to eat some more jerk chicken and then come holler at me.”

Adesanya notably once said that, “Your time will come when I say so.” Jones had his own translation of what that message actually meant:

“Want me to tell you what that means?” Jones asked. “I’m a bitch, I can’t beat Jon, and – him fighting me when he’s ready to ‘really beat me,’ it’s like, dude, don’t open your mouth if you can’t beat me right now. I would never say that about anyone, like, ‘Oh, I’m not ready to beat him yet, I’m gonna come back when

I’m good enough to beat him.’ As if my skills are stagnant and I’m not improving myself. It’s silly. What he basically said, and he’s just wording it how he wanted to, is, “I can not beat Jon.” Anything else he said outside of that doesn’t matter.”

Adesanya is currently on the path to land himself atop the middleweight division. He’ll take on Robert Whittaker in the main event of UFC 243 for their unification bout. However, if Adesanya ever gets the itch to jump up to 205 pounds, Jones is open to the challenge:

“He knows where I’ll be,” Jones said.

Things are looking good for an eventual clash between Israel Adesanya and Robert Whittaker.

The pair are expected to unify their UFC middleweight titles at the recently announced UFC 243 pay-per-view (PPV) in Melbourne, Australia. However, “Stylebender” is unsure whether or not Whittaker will show up given his injury history. Speaking to Submission Radio recently, Adesanya said he wouldn’t be surprised to see betting lines on if “Bobby Knuckles” will pull out of the bout:

You can’t judge that last fight and say – I mean, you can take whatever, you can say, he gets hit a lot. Cool. That’s what you get from that fight. People are gonna say Kelvin’s got a hard chin, Kelvin’s so tough. I’m like, Ni**a, I don’t like to brag, but I looked like a f*cking potato after that fight, I took some shots. But not once did my ass hit the ground. Kelvin’s ass hit the ground like five or six times, even seven. So, I mean, you could say whatever you want, I just stay calm composed. And I’ve been through a lot of adversity. The way we train is different.

We push to the breaking point, but we’re smart about it. That’s why we don’t get hurt and pull out of every single fight. I’m going to put a wager out there and see if he makes it to the fight. Cause for me, I’m keeping that same energy with the way I train. If he is… is he gonna make it to the fight? So, I’m prepared for him, but I don’t know if he’s gonna make it to the fight. That’s just history. They should put a wager on ‘will Robert make it to this fight? Will he pull out of this fight?’ and put odds on that based on all his other fights. That should be a new wager that gets added to the odds.”

Adesanya captured middleweight gold back in April when he defeated Kelvin Gastelum for the interim 185-pound throne. Now, the pair of New Zealanders will face off “Down Under” in what has the potential to be, undoubtedly, the biggest fight the continent has ever seen.

It looks like Robert Whittaker and Israel Adesanya’s UFC title unification clash will be getting the stadium treatment it deserves.

According to a report by Combate (h/t Aaron Bronsteter), both fighters are set to clash at UFC 243 which will now take place at the 55,000 plus capacity Marvel Stadium on October 5 in Melbourne, Australia.

The report comes right after UFC president Dana White claimed the fight would still be taking place in Australia. There were recent reports earlier claiming the fight would be moved from Sydney to Las Vegas because it clashed with the NRL Grand Final.

It was also previously reported that the plan was for UFC 243 to take place at the Bankwest Stadium in Sydney, which could hold up to 30,000 seats. However, such is the magnitude of the fight that it will now take place in the larger Marvel Stadium.

The UFC previously went to the Marvel Stadium for UFC 193 in November 2015 where fans witnessed Ronda Rousey lose to Holly Holm. The event attracted a UFC-record 56,214 fans. However, one can imagine the buzz will be even bigger for what is being dubbed as the biggest Australasian fight in combat sports history.

Adesanya, who grew up in New Zealand, earned the right to face Australia’s middleweight king Whittaker following his interim title win over Kelvin Gastelum at UFC 236. There also appears to be friction between the two which will only increase the anticipation for this fight.

There are no other details as of now regarding the rest of the card.
