Israel Adesanya is already looking to get a fight booked against UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones.

Both fighters have their next fights booked so this potential bout is still in the cards but not likely to take place in the near future. First up is Adesanya, who is slated to fight Kelvin Gastelum for the interim middleweight championship at UFC 236. Jones is set to make his next title defense against surging contender Thiago Santos in the main event of July 6’s UFC 239.

Just last month, Jones went on record by stating that he “has a feeling” he will fight Adesanya one day. While doing a recent interview, “The Last Stylebender” made it known that he agrees with that belief.

The reason for that is due to his thinking that since he beat all-time great, Anderson Silva, in his last fight, he can beat another GOAT in Jones.

“He was right and when I heard about it – I think maybe two days after he said it – I was like, ‘Oh, really?’” Adesanya told TMZ Sports recently. “I had receipts. I had some screenshots from prior, and then I posted them to show that I was already on that same plane. So yeah, great minds think alike.”

“It does tickle my loins,” Adesanya said (H/T to MMAFighting). “It does make me feel some type of way. I like challenges. [Jones] is the GOAT right now, right? I’ve already killed one GOAT, I’m hunting the next. Focus on this weekend. That’s way down the line. I’ve still got to run through all these middleweights first. So we’ll focus on that later on. That’s just a little teaser. Later on we’ll talk about that.”

Israel Adesanya is one of the best pure strikers the UFC has to offer at the moment.

“The Last Stylebender” is so confident in his abilities, he isn’t afraid to mix it up with anyone inside the cage – at any weight class.

Recently, some old sparring footage has emerged of Adesanya before he signed with the UFC. In it, he can be seen sparring former UFC light heavyweight title challenger Anthony “Rumble” Johnson for his then-scheduled title fight with Jon Jones.

Check that out here:

Adesanya is preparing to bounce from one huge fight to another. He defeated legendary former middleweight champ Anderson Silva in his last outing in February. Now, he’ll co-headline UFC 236 this weekend (Sat. April 13, 2019) against Kelvin Gastelum. The two will throw down for the interim UFC middleweight championship.

The winner will move on to unify their titles with Robert Whittaker, who has been kept out of action due to a string of health issues. Adesanya is undefeated in his mixed martial arts (MMA) career. He has earned wins over Silva, Derek Brunson, and Brad Tavares.

As for Gastelum, he’s currently on a two-fight win streak after defeating Michael Bisping and Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza. Now, they’ll compete in the biggest fight of their respective careers Saturday night, with a chance to go on and unify the middleweight titles against one of the better strikers in the division.

Judging from this video, Adesanya isn’t scared to scrap with anyone.

Israel Adesanya reacts to Kelvin Gastelum questioning if he should’ve received a title shot in the middleweight division.

Gastelum isn’t the only fighter to question the wins that the rising contender has picked up. UFC middleweight champion Robert Whittaker is expected to the fight the winner of this interim title bout between the two fighters. Even the champ has expressed questions about the hype around him.

Part of that is due to how Adesanya got to the title fight, which was beating former champion Anderson Silva, who is still competitive but past his prime. For Adesanya, he pointed out the fighters that Gastelum has beaten to get to this point in his pro-MMA career as well.

“So someone actually on Instagram kinda pointed out to me that everyone keeps saying, ‘Oh, I fought an old Anderson.’ Anderson’s beaten a lot of the guys [Gastelum]’s beaten when they were younger,” Adesanya told MMAFighting. “[Gastelum] fought Belfort when he was old, ‘Jacare’ when he was old, Bisping when he was old, (Nate) Marquardt when he was old, and the list goes on. So I don’t know why people aren’t considering that.

Like, these guys that he’s dropping, they’re just literally [covering up] and just getting hit. Anderson’s a different kind of beast, so that’s why getting ready for him I felt was harder physically and also a harder fight to deal with than Kelvin.”

The UFC 236 pay-per-view event is set to take place on Saturday, April 13, 2019, at the State Farm Arena in Atlanta, Georgia.

“It’s all about me and how I move in this fight,” Adesanya said. “It’s not really about him. He can do what he wants to do, but I’m going to make him do what I want to do.”
