Michael Bisping is adamant that he did not duck the top contenders during his UFC middleweight title reign.

At UFC 199, Michael Bisping pulled off one of the biggest upsets in title-fight history when he knocked off Luke Rockhold on short notice to become the new UFC middleweight champion. This would mark the beginning of one of the most unusual championship reigns in company history.

The reign lasted 16 months with two title defenses, and neither defense came against a top-10 opponent.

First, Bisping took on Dan Henderson in a rematch of their 2009 clash that saw Henderson turn in one of the most memorable knockouts of all time. Bisping would then defeat Henderson via unanimous decision at UFC 204 to earn his redemption.

And who can forget the final bout of GOAT candidate Georges St-Pierre, who returned after four years of retirement to challenge Bisping for the title fight? St-Pierre would go on to defeat Bisping and join the UFC’s selective double-champion’s club consisting of fighters that won world titles in multiple weight classes.

During Bisping’s reign, names like Robert Whittaker, Jacare Souza, and Yoel Romero were in line to face Bisping at one point or another. The main reason none of those fights came together was bad timing, including Bisping dealing with lingering health issues.

Despite the health issues, Bisping was willing to put off medical procedures if it meant fighting big names like Nick Diaz or, as was eventually the case, Georges St-Pierre. This led to Bisping coming under some criticism at the time, and even a United States Congressman questioned a company official about the legitimacy of the UFC as a sport, using Bisping’s championship reign as an example.

Bisping: “I Never Turned Anybody Down”

During a recent post on his YouTube channel, Bisping defended UFC Lightweight Champion Charles Oliveira’s calls for money fights against Conor McGregor and Nate Diaz.

“The Count” believes Islam Makhachev is off base for referring to Oliveira as a coward for these callouts because mixed martial artists are ultimately prize fighters, and he used himself and his 2016-2017 title reign as an example.

“Listen, I was champion of the world for a period of time. And when I was there, I was supposed to fight Robert Whittaker, but he got injured. I was then supposed to fight Yoel Romero, but I got injured. I had to have surgery on my left knee. Of course, ultimately, I had to have that knee replaced.

“But in the meantime, a fight with Georges St-Pierre materialized. Georges St-Pierre, one of the biggest box-office smashes that the UFC had ever saw, he wanted to come out of retirement, come up to 185 because I presented a new challenge for him. And the cheeky bugger probably thought he could beat me as well, which, as we know, he did. So I took that fight against Georges, and it was a great fight.

“But more importantly, I made a lot of money. It was, by far, the biggest payday of my career. Now I wasn’t dodging anyone. No, I was taking on all comers. I was fighting whoever the UFC put in front of me. And that’s what I did all the time. I never turned anybody down. But when Georges St-Pierre came about, yes, I wanted that fight! Of course, I did.

“Number 1, thought I could beat him. But secondly, no offense to Robert or Yoel, they weren’t big pay-per-view stars. Georges St-Pierre was. He was huge. And him coming back was a massive storyline, and we sold almost a million pay-per-view buys. Robert and Yoel, I think they did like 200,000, so there you go.”

Michael Bisping now works as a color commentator during UFC broadcasts and also has his own podcast and YouTube channel where he shares his insight on various hot topics happening across the sport of MMA. Bisping’s final bout came three weeks after his loss to St-Pierre, where he lost to Kelvin Gastelum via KO.

Everything ultimately worked out for Robert Whittaker, who went on to become the undisputed UFC middleweight champion. Unfortunately, the same cannot be said for Yoel Romero and Jacare Souza, who both exited the UFC without ever capturing company gold.

What do you think about Michael Bisping’s reflections on his UFC title reign?

Former Strikeforce champion Ronaldo ‘Jacare’ Souza doesn’t seem interested in a return to MMA but would like a return to combat sports in the future.

Jacare Souza hung up his gloves just three months after being released from the UFC back in August 2021. He recently went on MMA Fighting’s Portuguese-language podcast Trocação Franca and shared his thoughts on a potential return to combat sports.

”Honestly I have no desire to fight MMA again. I’ve fought a lot, I’ve done a lot, and I have no interest in fighting MMA again. Boxing, however, you train hard but don’t get injured, so it’s something you can do.” (Transcribed via mmafighting.com).

The experienced jiu-jitsu practitioner has shown he has extreme punching power, knocking out the likes of Chris Weidman, Derek Brunson, Yushin Okami, and Vitor Belfort. If he does set up a move to boxing, Jacare Souza already has some potential opponents in mind such as former UFC opponent Vitor Belfort and current UFC Middleweight Paulo Costa.

“I think a match with ‘Borrachinha’ would also be cool because it’s a different generation. I’m not disrespecting ‘Borrachinha’, I just think it would be a good fight. Everybody would like it, different generations. ‘Borrachinha [has] heavy hands, let’ see if ‘Jacare’ can take it, that sort of thing.”

“That would get a lot of buzz no doubt about it. He’s still fighting in the UFC, he has a contract, I don’t know if he would leave to box. Let’s see. I think it would be cool. Ask him if he would do it.”

Who do you think would win in a Boxing Matchup of Paulo Costa and Jacare Souza?

Former top diddleweight contender ‘Jacare’ Ronaldo Souza is a free agent according to ESPN.

The Brazilian has completed his current UFC contract and is not expected to be re-signed by the promotion.

Souza (26-10 MMA, 9-7 UFC) most recently fought last week at UFC 262, suffering a submission loss to Andre Muniz who broke the former Strikeforce champions arm in the process. Souza underwent surgery this past week on where he suffered a broken arm and is now expected to take some time out to heal before making his next move.

Sitting at 1-5 over his last 6 fights with the company, Souza does hold some major wins with the promotion including wins over Chris Weidman, Derek Brunson, Vitor Belfort, and Yushin Okami.

Souza joined the UFC from Strikeforce, a promotion where Souza was once middleweight king. Souza won the vacant Strikeforce middleweight title by defeating Tim Kennedy in 2010 and went on to defend it against Robbie Lawler before dropping the belt to Luke Rockhold.

It’s been a long and spectacular career for Jacare Souza. While he never claimed gold in the UFC, he was almost always in the top tier of middleweight contenders and a proverbial threat against anyone he fought. It’s hard to tell what’s next for Souza, but one can assume it will come with success.

Despite his devastating submission loss to Andre Muniz at UFC 262, Jacare Souza appears in good spirits after a successful surgery of his humerus at a Houston hospital this weekend.

Souza suffered the injury late into Round 1 of his fight, after Muniz sunk in a modified armbar that appeared to snap Souza’s arm right away. This was the first time that Souza had suffered a submission loss since being forced to tap against Tim Boetsch at UFC 208.

Souza’s coach Josuel Distak posted on his Instagram and provided a brief update on his condition following the tough end to his return to the octagon.

It was a tough outing for Souza who was making just his second fight at middleweight since he returned to the division following a brief stint at light heavyweight, including a split-decision loss to current light heavyweight champ Jan Blachowicz. Souza has now lost four straight fights and five of his last six.

As for Muniz, he’s been on a tear since arriving in the UFC through a pair of fights in Dana White’s Contender Series. He has now won seven straight fights and has come out victorious in 15 of his last 16 bouts in his career. He’s sure to add to an already stacked middleweight division and has a chance to emerge in the division rankings with at least another win against a tough opponent.

As for Souza, it remains unclear as to what could be next for him. At age 41, it’s not a secret that he’s near the tail end of his career in the UFC. He’ll need at least six months to recover from his fractured humerus before he plans a return to the octagon. Souza’s doctor, Rickson Moraes oversaw the surgery and thinks that he could make an excellent return to competition following his recovery.

It’s been a wild 2021 so far watching former legends of the sport fall from grace, including Souza’s middleweight colleague Chris Weidman. After suffering a cringe-worthy break at UFC 262, it’s encouraging to see that Souza is on the right path as he begins to heal.
