Jack Della Maddalena

An intense banger is coming to the UFC’s welterweight division as Jack Della Maddalena and Sean Brady have agreed to throw down at UFC 290 on July 8th in Las Vegas.

As confirmed by MMA Fighting after an initial Twitter report, this welterweight scrap seems to be signed, sealed, and ready to deliver some explosive fireworks.

JDM is riding an impressive four-fight win streak, all via finishes after originally breaking into the UFC thanks to a shot on Dana White‘s Contender Series back in 2021. For Sean Brady, this will be his redemption fight as the previously undefeated prospect suffered the first loss in his professional career at the hands of Belal Muhammad back in October of 2022.

Jack Della Maddalena and Sean Brady are set for what could be a potential Fight of The Year contender at UFC 290

Jack Della Maddalena and Brady are set to join a PPV card that is looking to be a night of amazing fights. Alexander Volkanovski and Yair Rodriguez are set to headline the card. Rodriguez will be looking to end Volkanovski’s flawless reign as champion at UFC 290 and unify the interim and undisputed championships.

The co-main will feature the always-exciting Brandon Moreno as he’ll attempt to defend his flyweight title against what many would call the dark horse of the division: Alexandre Pantoja.

Bo Nickal makes a return, and he’s going to be taking on a very serious opponent. Tresean Gore is a young up-and-comer with a hard past and a family to fight for. Both fighters are known for their heart and ability, but will Nickal make easy work of Gore as he did with his last opponent Jamie Pickett?

There will be many stars, young and old, on this card, and UFC 290 is certainly shaping up to be a tremendous event. For a full view of the fights to come, check out the full list of fights below. The order of bouts may change, and some fights may fall off or get added to the card as we draw closer and closer to the event.

  • Alexander Volkanovski  vs.  Yair Rodriguez: Featherweight title fight
  • Brandon Moreno  vs.  Alexandre Pantoja: Flyweight title fight
  • Bo Nickal  vs.  Tresean Gore: Middleweight bout
  • Deiveson Figueiredo  vs.  Manel Kape: Flyweight bout

With a five-fight win streak since returning to the welterweight division, Joaquin Buckley now finds himself ranked inside the top 10 at 170-pounds. His latest win was also his biggest, stopping Stephen “Wonderboy” Thompson at UFC 307 to climb to the #9-spot.

Now, Buckley is looking for another opponent that can put him into the title picture after beating the likes of Thompson, Nursulton Ruziboev and Vicente Luque. The issue he’s encountering is that many of the big names ahead of him are not interested in taking the fight.

In order for Buckley to get within reach of a title shot, he will need another big name on his resume but that’s not possible if he can’t make this line up for him. In a recent interview with Inside Fighting, Buckley was asked who he thinks would accept a fight with him that’s currently above him in the rankings.

He struggled to think of too many examples, picking out three names in the end with one of them being the current champion.

“Accept a fight? That’s a hard one. I believe the ones that are true fighters and true martial artists who would love to step into the cage with me are JDM (Jack Della Maddalena), is one of them… Damn, that’s kinda crazy, when I really start to think about it. Ian Garry probably… Belal Muhammad, that’s it bro. That’s it. When you talk about really wanna step in the cage with me, I don’t think there’s a lot of dudes that went to step in there with me.”

Buckley then proceeded to list several names that he doesn’t think would agree to fight him, including Kamaru Usman who he called out after his most recent win.

“Gilbert don’t want to step in there with me, Leon Edwards wouldn’t want to step in there with me, Colby Covington wouldn’t want to step in there with me. We see Usman didn’t want that work. Sean Brady blocked me from Instagram so he definitely don’t want to get the work. There’s not a lot of guys that’s willing to step in that cage with me, I’ll tell you that.”

During an interview on The MMA Hour, Maddalena spoke about a potential scrap with Luque and how it would resonate with fans. He previously called for a fight with Luque during ESPN’s post-fight show after his UFC 284 win.

I think it’ll make a cool fight. I think that’s one for the fans and I think the UFC would get behind that sort of a fight.”

Luque is #9 in the welterweight rankings. He’s lost his last two fights to Geoff Neal and Belal Muhammad. He does have wins over Michael Chiesa, Tyron Woodley, Randy Brown, Niko Price, and Jalin Turner.

Jack Della Maddalena Has Been On A Tear Since His UFC Debut

Maddalena is unbeaten in the UFC. He last secured a first-round submission win over Randy Brown on Feb.12 in his hometown of Perth, Australia. The finish earned him a $50,000 performance of the night bonus. After the win, he became the #14 ranked welterweight in the UFC. Maddalena made his first appearance on Dana White’s Contender Series in September 2021, where he earned a UFC contract. Since then, he’s finished his last four fights in the first round. He also went 3-0 during his rookie year in 2022.

The 26-year-old Maddalena prefers to stay active in 2023. He said May might be the month for his return and second fight of the year.

I think at least three [fights] would be the goal. I was pretty happy with the schedule last year with three fights. I fight at the start of the year, mid-year, and then towards November. I can probably stick to that same sort of schedule and keep it rolling.”
