Jack Hermansson believes he will score a third-round stoppage win when he squares off against former middleweight title challenger Kelvin Gastelum in the co-main event on July 15.

Hermansson is looking to bounce back from a tough loss against Jared Cannonier last time out at UFC Copenhagen. ‘The Joker’ started well in the September 2019 bout but things went south in round two. He was caught with a beautiful uppercut that sent him tumbling to the floor. ‘The Killa Gorilla’ lived up to his nickname by seizing the moment and finishing the fight.

After being linked with a fight against former 185lb champion, Chris Weidman the European standout out was eventually matched against TUF winner Gastelum who is coming off back-to-back losses to Israel Adesanya and Darren Till.

Speaking exclusively to LowKickMMA Hermansson revealed his long-held admiration for his July 18 opponent, he said.

“I think he’s a great opponent and I have been following him for years. I watched that season of the Ultimate Fighter that he won. He’s a great fighter and as you mentioned the Adesanya fight. When he is on his best he is really, really good and that’s the guy I’m thinking I will face on ‘Fight Island’.

The 32-year-old believes fighting such a dangerous opponent will bring out the best in him, he said.

“I need to be on my best as well to be able to beat him. Knowing that he is so good is going to sharpen me (and) bring the best out of me as well. I believe that I really need to do those adjustments from the last fight, be unpredictable and use all of my tools to win the fight – I think that is key.”

While Hermansson would prefer an easy nights work against Gastelum, he understands that is unlikely. Nonetheless, the Sweedish fighters predicts he will get the finish in July 15 in the third and final round.

“I would prefer an early finish but when I see it happen, I’m seeing a long, grueling fight. Three rounds and me finishing the fight at the end of the third round,” Hermansson said.

Middleweight contenders Jack Hermansson and Kelvin Gastelum are set to fight on July 18. According to reports the two title hopefuls will throw down on ‘Fight Island’ with the winner moving one step closer to a shot at current 185lb king Israel Adesanya.

Brett Okamoto of ESPN broke the news last night that two of the best middleweights on the planet will square off next month, he wrote. “Per sources, Jack Hermansson (@jackthejokermma) and Kelvin Gastelum (@KelvinGastelum) have agreed to meet on July 18 on Fight Island.”

Hermansson will enter the fight off the back of a TKO loss to fellow contender Jared Cannonier. Prior to that, the Swedish fighter had been in the form of his life picking up four straight wins inside the octagon, including a high-profile, upset victory over ‘Jacare’ Souza. He also holds other big wins over the likes of Scott Askham, Thales Leites, and David Branch.

Gastelum is also looking to get back in the win column after two straight defeats. The Ultimate Fighter winner previously went five rounds with Adesanya for the interim middleweight title in one of the best fights of all-time – he lost a unanimous decision in that fight. Gastelum then met Darren Till in his middleweight debut at UFC 244. In the fight, he struggled to pin down the Englishman who easily outpointed him over three rounds to get the judge’s decision. Since suffering his second straight loss Gastelum has tested positive for marijuana and was subsequently banned from the sport for four months. Now his time has been served it appears Gastelum is ready to go and fans don’t have to wait too long to see him back in action.

As of right now, no further details about the July 18 ‘Fight Island’ card have been released. It remains to be seen if this fight will headline or will help build up a bigger event. Be sure to stay tuned to LowKickMMA for the breaking news and up-to-date information on this event as we get it.

Kelvin Gastelum

Middleweight contender Kelvin Gastelum is hoping he’ll be able to fight Jack Hermansson next and re-establish himself at the top of the division.

Gastelum is currently on a two-fight losing streak after falling to consecutive defeats against Israel Adesanya and Darren Till. Speaking to MMA Fighting the 28-year-old revealed he has been suffering from a torn LCL and is currently healing up, he said.

“I’ve been recovering from a torn LCL back in January. I had a full tear. No surgery needed, thankfully. Just been doing therapy on it and reconstructive therapy on it. It’s about 85 or 90 percent there,” Gastelum said.

“I’m just starting to grapple a bit, starting to box again. I’m starting to kick again. Training is picking back up a little bit. Just at the right time. Hopefully, by July, (and) I don’t know where this whole pandemic thing will be by then, but I’m hoping to fight by July.”

Once he is fit and ready to fight Gastelum has one opponent in mind who he thinks will help propel him back into title contention, he explained.

“I like to be able to fight anybody in the top-five,” Gastelum said. “In my opinion, a fight with Jack Hermansson would make sense. We’re both coming off losses. He’s in the top-five. A win for either of us would take us where we need to go.

“We both need to work our way back up the division, back up to Adesanya. I feel that’s the one that makes sense, but you never know what the matchmakers are thinking.”

The Swedish middleweight contender is coming off a loss to Jared Cannonier. He is currently being linked to a fight with former champion Chris Weidman although nothing has been confirmed yet.

The UFC is still looking to book a middleweight encounter between Jack Hermansson and Chris Weidman.

The pair were originally set to collide in the UFC Oklahoma City headliner on May 2. However, Hermansson — currently based in Norway — was unable to travel to the United States last month due to travel restrictions amid the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. The event was later canceled.

However, the promotion is now attempting to secure “The Joker” a visa to the United States as it gets ready to resume its schedule next month.

“Right now, I’m not sure they will be able to get me a new visa, they are working on it and as soon as things are sorted, and the UFC thinks they can make it happen, so I’m sure they will,” Hermansson told MMA Fighting’s Eurobash podcast.

“I’m not too sure what day I got the notice [regarding traveling restrictions to the U.S.], but it was not unexpected. I trained hard for the fight, but I knew this could happen, but I’m still training and waiting for a new chance that it will show up.”

Of course, only essential travel is granted to the United States as of now, so it might be an uphill task for Hermansson to get his visa.

That is why while Hermansson is their top choice to face the former middleweight champion, they also have reserve opponents in mind.

“I am the matchup that they want, but at the same time they’re trying to get reserves,” Hermansson added. “That was the situation when we were supposed to fight as well. They had a couple of reserves in case I couldn’t make it inside the States, but then they postponed the whole thing anyway.

“Right now, I’m not sure. I’m speaking to the UFC and right now they still want to make the fight happen. I guess if they can’t make it happen soon enough they will have someone for Weidman.”

Hermansson is coming off a second-round TKO defeat to Jared Cannonier. He was previously on a four-fight winning streak.

Do you think Hermansson will be granted a visa and potentially end up facing Weidman next month?
