Alex Swetland is a 14-year-old with cerebral palsy. After contending with various bouts of health ailments, the teenager is eager to one day make his mark in MMA.
Swetland is a story of determination and willpower. The 14-year-old has cerebral palsy and periventricular leukomalacia, which is known as PVL. PVL is a brain injury that causes softening of the white brain tissue near the ventricles in the brain.
While much of Alex Swetland’s life is spent in a wheelchair, the fighter is adamant that he will shatter expectations and walk one day. Coaches and Swetland’s father came together at Jackson-Wink MMA Academy and designed a harness that would help support some of the 14-year-old’s body weight.
“My thought process was if we get this harness, strap him in the harness and strap the harness to the railing, he could stand up,” said Swetland’s father. “That way he’s not thinking about standing, but then he’s working on something so he’s actually on his feet.”
The apparatus was designed to take pressure off of Alex and also help him stand upright without the fear of falling. Alex trains at Jackson Wink MMA Academy in Albuquerque and is happy to be surrounded by a stable of top fighters in the UFC.
“The best fighter in the whole wide world is that man, Jon ‘Bones’ Jones and Diego Sanchez,” said Alex, as he eagerly pointed to their posters hanging on the gym wall.
Jackson-Wink has an innovative program for those with disabilities or special needs called the IncredAble Adaptive MMA Program. The overall goal of the program is to provide environmentally, physical, and cognitive challenges married with the values of mixed martial arts.

Jon Jones has taken to social media to slam the critics of his recent domestic violence case.
The former UFC light heavyweight champ has been no stranger to scandal or controversy. In 2015 Jones was involved in a hit-and-run incident where he crashed into a pregnant woman’s car and fled on foot. In 2016 he failed a drug test just before UFC 200 and was stripped of his interim title. Then once again in 2018 he failed another drug test, this time for an anabolic steroid, and was suspended for 15 months.
Right when it looked like Jones was really cleaning up his act for good, he gets involved in a domestic violence case in September of this year. Jones allegedly caused physical harm to his fiancee and headbutted a cop car. As a result of that incident, Jones got kicked out of his long-time gym, the Jackson Wink Academy. Since then, Jones has kept relatively quiet until the past couple of days.
‘Bones’ took to his Twitter yesterday to voice his frustrations with how the public has been treating him. The tweets have since been deleted but bjpenn.com has able to grab screenshots before he took them down.
“If you’re still talking about what happened in Las Vegas but you’re living at your moms house, your priorities are in the wrong place my friend. You over there focusing on another man’s troubles, I’m over here focusing on getting farther ahead of you.”
Jones then responses to fan that says that his mom lives with him.
“I actually respect situations like that tremendously. If my mother was still alive I would definitely allow her to live with me. I’m talking about you losers out there, very rarely do happy or successful people take time out of their day to harass others on the Internet.”

Jon Jones has found a new, yet familiar home to train out of.
Jones has been training with Greg Jackson and Mike Winkeljohn for the vast majority of his MMA career, being a big reason for the notoriety and fame of the gym. However, that all changed after his latest run-in with the law that saw him accused of domestic violence. Winkeljohn then revealed that he made the decision to ban the former light heavyweight champion from the gym until he is sober and able to get his life on track.
Last week, Jones said that he made the decision that, no matter what happens, he will not be returning to Jackson-Winkeljohn in the future.
“I definitely wouldn’t mind traveling a little bit and visiting a few places. You guys got any recommendations?” Jones wrote, before adding in subsequent tweets:
“I don’t feel like I carried the team (at Jackson-Wink), we have lots of guys doing amazing things out of that gym. I will admit the program isn’t at the level it used to be, and hasn’t been for a while now.
“definitely won’t be going back but I will continue to root for all the fighters that are training there. I do believe my training methods and sessions have improved significantly since changing environments. Grateful for all the time I got to spend there, everything has its time,” Jones continued.
“I know I won’t be able to train in my garage forever, eventually I’m going to need more training partners. Mainly wrestling partners and kickboxers. I’m on the lookout for teams that I’ll be able to visit and come train with, maybe get some sparring sessions in.”
Jon Jones Announces New Membership With Gym
Today, Jones announced where he will be training moving forward, Jackson’s MMA Acoma, a gym affiliated with Coach Greg Jackson.
“I want to sincerely thank Gym owner/ coach Nick Urso and everyone at the original Jackson’s MMA program for allowing me to call their dojo my new home base. I was so proud to see the condition of the gym, it was so well taken care of and the energy felt amazing exactly the way it was before. It has wonderful memories of my time learning from GSP, Sugar Evans, The dean of mean and so many more. I won my first world title out of this gym. I am grateful to have this comfortable place for both my local and visiting training partners to come enjoy. The best is yet to come!”
Few can argue with the idea that Jones will almost certainly benefit from a change in training environment. It will be interesting to see where he goes from here. Jones is expected to make his heavyweight debut in the first quarter of 2022.
