UFC 249 will now have Francis Ngannou vs. Jairzinho Rozenstruik added to the card.

The heavyweight contest was originally scheduled to headline UFC Columbus last month but had to be postponed amid the coronavirus pandemic.

However, UFC president Dana White has been adamant about UFC 249 taking place on April 18. And with both Ngannou and Rozenstruik being open to competing on the card, it looks like they have gotten their wish.

“Confirmed: Francis Ngannou (@francis_ngannou) vs. Jair Rozenstruik (@JairRozenstruik) will take place at UFC 249 on April 18,” ESPN’s Brett Okamoto tweeted on Monday.

Rozenstruik would confirm the fight as well.

“I’m happy to announce that I’ll fight @Francis_Ngannou on April 18 at #UFC249. Further details will be announced shortly!”

UFC 249 still doesn’t have a disclosed location, though it has been reported that it would likely take place on the West Coast of the United States. However, it does have an official main event following today’s news that Tony Ferguson would battle Justin Gaethje for the interim lightweight title.

Jairzinho Rozenstruik is all for headlining UFC 249 on April 18 opposite Francis Ngannou.

The card was originally set to be headlined by a lightweight title fight between Khabib Nurmagomedov and Tony Ferguson. However, that bout appears to be off with “The Eagle” recently expressing frustration at the lack of a confirmed location for the event while he remains in Russia.

With no main event as of now, unbeaten contender Rozenstruik has offered a solution should UFC 249 still take place amid the coronavirus pandemic — him vs. Ngannou in the headliner for the interim heavyweight title:

“If it’s going to happen, I’m going to be on it for sure,” Rozenstruik told MMA Junkie. “Now, I see the main event is in trouble, so for me it would make it more interesting for me and Francis and also the fans. I mean, I’ve been training for four months, I’m ready to go, so I think they should put the interim belt and make it more interesting because the fans would love to see that.

“The fight between (Daniel Cormier) and Stipe, I don’t know how long that’s going to last. I think with this situation all the fights will be rebooked, so I think people are going to fight twice, maybe once a year. So we don’t know when this situation is going to have a resolution.”

It’s certainly not a bad idea given how most would agree that the winner of the fight should be facing the champion anyway. However, it would still be underwhelming given how fans have been waiting years to see Nurmagomedov vs. Ferguson.

Of course, it all hinges on whether UFC president Dana White is able to find and confirm a location for the April 18 show.

‘They haven’t told us the location, yet,” Rozenstruik added. “But for us we’re still hoping, and we do our best to keep training, so we’d be ready for when they give us the location.”

Jairzinho Rozenstruik says he’d be open to fighting Francis Ngannou at UFC 249 on April 18.

Originally, Rozenstruik and Ngannou were set to headline UFC Columbus but the event was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. When the two will fight again is unknown at this time, as Rozenstruik says he is waiting on an update.

“We’re doing what we have to do, keeping training, waiting for an update,” Rozenstruik told The Schmo recently (via MMA Fighting). “Now we’ve slowed the pace a little bit down. As soon as we have an update, we’ll squeeze it back up and we’re on. So we’re ready for whatever.”

One possible option for when the fight will take place is April 18 according to Rozenstruik as he says he’d be happy to fight then. Ngannou, also recently said he has been tested and prepared to fight at UFC 249. So it does seem like a logical option.

“I’d be happy to dance 18th of April,” Rozenstruik said. “I can’t wait for this [fight] to happen because we’ve been working hard for it and the fun has to come out right now. It’s about time.”

For now, Jairzinho Rozenstruik is just on standby mode waiting for the UFC to tell him the date for when they will fight.

“A couple days ago [the UFC] called and they said the situation – maybe a month or later [is when we will fight],” Rozenstruik said. “So we’re waiting for an actual date so we know when we’re gonna dance. . . The situation is crazy. I really want to dance and then go back to the family and get back to normal and hope the situation settles up really fast.”

Rozenstruik is undefeated and currently coming off a fifth-round TKO win over Alistair Overeem. Before that, he knocked out Andrei Arlovski at UFC 244.

Andrei Arlovski says he didn’t take Jairzinho Rozenstruik seriously and he paid the price.

Back at UFC 244, the former UFC heavyweight champion in Arlovski was taking on Rozenstruik in just his third UFC fight. There, he suffered a first-round knockout loss. For Arlovski, he says the loss nearly cost him his UFC career.

“Rozenstruik right now is training at American Top Team and he’s sparring behind the curtains. But my buddy who spars with him whooped his ass. And, he makes me feel like (expletive) because I didn’t take that fight serious and I paid for it,” Arlovski said this past Saturday while a guest fighter at UFC Norfolk (via MMA Junkie). “It was 29 seconds. I have no clue how he beat (Alistair) Overeem in the fifth round. So I guess he’s going to fight (Francis) Ngannou right now, and I don’t know what’s going to happen.

“It’s another lesson for me: I have to take my opponent seriously.”

Now, at UFC Oklahoma City, Arlovski is set to fight Philipe Lins. The former champ says he’s now disciplined and will take his opponents seriously.

“I didn’t follow my game plan (against Rozenstruik), first of all. Secondly, I wasn’t that disciplined during the fight week,” Arlovski said. “I went to the restaurant and I had a nice dinner and I told all my coaches, ‘Listen, five more minutes and we’re going back to the restaurant.’ (Expletive) happens, you know. Thank God I still fight and I’m still in the UFC. I’m already three months with not even a glass of wine or beer, and I chose again what’s more important for me. I just have to remind myself why I’m doing this.”

Whether or not this newfound discipline and taking his opponents seriously will benefit Andrei Arlovski is to be seen.
