To say the UFC’s light-heavyweight division has been a mess of late would be an understatement. Two champion vacating due to injury, several vacant title fights and a controversial draw has left the division needing a definitive champion.

The title will now be up for grabs at UFC 295 between former middleweight champion, Pereira and former 205lb champion, Prochazka.

Jamahal Hill discusses upcoming light-heavyweight title fight

The divisions most recent champion, Hill, who vacated the title after suffering an injury will now have to watch his former title, which he never lost, be handed over to someone else.

“It brings up some feelings,” Hill reacted to the fight news on his YouTube channel. “This would officially vacate me as the champion.

“They’re definitely two fighters that I wanted to meet in my reign as champion,” Hill continued. “I do still plan to meet [them] upon my return. I just kind of hate the fact that one kind of has to cancel the other out. (H/T MMA Fighting)

“For me personally the best thing that could happen would be like, I don’t know, a controversial type deal happening so that way they keep their value intact for both so I can just come back and do my thing. But it is what it is. I’m healing up, I’m coming along, doing physical therapy twice a day, just getting back to it.”

Hill continued, stating that he will be cage-side for the bout and plans on fighting the winner once his is fully fit.

“I plan on being there [at the fight]. I’m gonna go, I’m gonna watch, I’m gonna see what happens, and I’ll look the next man in the eye and let him know what’s coming. I don’t got to say nothing, I can just give you a look and you know everything you need to know. I just can’t wait to be back. We’ll see who will sit as the steward on the throne until the king returns.”

Jamahal Hill doesn’t care who leaves UFC 295 as the light heavyweight champion.

After suffering an injury that will force him to sit out for an extended period of time, ‘Sweet Dreams’ will lay back and watch two other fighters, Jiri Prochazka and Alex Pereira, compete for the belt that Hill believes is still rightfully his.

In January, Jamahal Hill claimed the light heavyweight title following a five-round scrap with ex-champion Glover Teixeira. ‘Sweet Dream’ found himself thrust into the title picture after former champion Jiri Prochazka was forced to vacate the belt due to a severe shoulder injury that would require surgery.

In an ironic turn of events, Hill was forced to do the same, vacating his title after suffering a ruptured Achilles over the summer.

“A lot of people I’ve seen say ‘Ah, you weren’t really the champion…You only got this opportunity because Ji?í vacated the belt, because he was injured.’” Hill said in a video on his YouTube channel. “Yeah, and that was the case in which I got my opportunity. And whenever I got my opportunity against the same opponent that Ji?í himself was going [to fight again] to basically put the stamp of legitimacy on his title reign.”

Jamahal Hill Breaks Down the Difference Between Himself and Jiri Prochazka

Though their circumstances are similar, Jamahal Hill believes that he is still the rightful king of the light heavyweight division after comparing their individual clashes with recently retired 205’er, Glover Teixeira.

“He got the submission [against Teixeira] but he got his a** whooped for the good majority of that fight. I can’t look at somebody as a ‘king’ who’s got their a** whooped on some of the occasions he’s had. He’s lost some rounds very, very significantly in the past. We’ve seen him rocked, we’ve seen him hurt. You’ve never seen me rocked, you’ve never seen me hurt. You’ve never seen me wobbled, you’ve never seen me just dominated. So I am the king. Until I come back and I’m given my proper opportunity to stand on that and defend what’s mine, I look at myself as the king” (h/t MMA News).

Jamahal Hill is not expected to be cleared for action until 2024, but rest assured that whoever comes out of UFC 295 with the title, they will be the first order of business for ‘Sweet Dreams’ once he makes his return to the Octagon.

Czech Republic favorite, Jiri Prochazka has reacted to the vacating of the undisputed light heavyweight championship of Jamahal Hill this week, wishing the Illinois native well in rehabilitation – as well as weighing up a return fight with fellow former champions, Jan Blachowicz, and Alex Pereira.

Prochazka, a former undisputed light heavyweight champion, has been sidelined himself since headlining UFC 275 back in June of last year, striking divisional gold with a stunning fifth round win over Glover Teixeira, submitting the Brazilian with a rear-naked choke in Singapore.

Slated to defend the crown in an immediate title rematch with Teixeira at UFC 282 back in December of last year, a catastrophic shoulder injury forced the cancellation of the bout, with former Rizin FF champion, Jiri Prochazka electing to relinquish the title to boot.

However, this week, the 205 pound championship was left in limbo once more, with Hill officially announcing his decision to vacate the crown, after rupturing his achilles tendon in a pick-up basketball match during International Fight Week earlier this month.

In turn, fans have called for the inclusion of a vacant title between the above-mentioned duo of Blachowicz and Pereira – with the former light heavyweight and middleweight champion, respectively, fighting at UFC 291 later this month already.

Addressing Hill’s decision to vacate the throne, Prochazka, the current number one ranked contender, has wished the former well in his recovery, as well as weighing up his part in the ongoing title situation.

“Man, I’m so sorry, I was really looking forward to our fight,” Jiri Prochazka tweeted to Jamahal Hill. “I appreciate your release of the title. Only a person who has experienced this situation can appreciate such a thing. Who is next? Winner [of] (Jan) Blachowicz vs. (Alex) Pereira or…?”

Jamahal Hill vacates UFC light heavyweight title rupturing achilles basketball match

UFC light heavyweight champion, Jamahal Hill has confirmed his relinquishing of the official undisputed championship this morning, revealing he is set to underdo a surgical procedure to address an achilles rupture, believed to have been suffered during a basketball match during International Fight Week earlier this month.

Hill, the first product of Dana White’s Contender Series to clinch gold under the banner of the UFC, managed to do so back in January in the main event of UFC 283, landing a unanimous decision victory against former champion, Glover Teixeira in the pair’s vacant title fight.

Jamahal Hill confirms his vacating of the UFC light heavyweight title

And expected to defend his crown in a title fight against the former champion, Jiri Prochazka later this year, Illinois native, Hill, has now confirmed he has been forced to vacate his undisputed light heavyweight crown due to an injury.

“I have unfortunately suffered an injury,” Jamahal Hill said in a video posted on his official YouTube channel. “I’ve ruptured my achilles’. It’s just one of those things that happens. It’s a tough injury. It’s one that will require surgery and will require time and rehab and things for me to be out for a while. Also with that, I was given an opportunity. I was given a blessing that came at the misfortune of someone else. Jiri Prochazka was the champion, he suffered an injury as these things happen. He gave up the belt and allowed for others to not hold the division. To keep the division moving forward. To keep entertaining. To make sure the people had a champion. I’ll do the same.”

“Right now, the biggest thing is focusing on my recovery, focusing on getting back to 100 percent,” Jamahal Hill explained. “I need to take some time to focus on my health and make sure that I’m 100 percent and I’m the fighter that everybody knows who i am and who I’ve been since I’ve stepped into this. In order to do that, I need to focus on healing and getting ready and rehabbing.”

And furthermore, according to MMA Fighting reporter, Damon Martin, Jamahal Hill is believed to have suffered the rupturing of his achilles during a basketball match featuring several current and former UFC fighters during International Fight Week earlier this month.

At the time of publication, the UFC have yet to release an official statement in conjunction with Hill’s announcement, nor have yet to address the future of a now-vacant light heavyweight championship.
