Anthony Smith Jamahal Hill Glover Teixeira UFC title

‘Lionheart’ Anthony Smith and ‘Sweet Dreams’ Jamahal Hill were booked to fight each other later next year, but now instead they will be working alongside one another in the gym to get ready for a title shot.

At UFC 282 earlier this month, the vacant UFC light heavyweight title was fought over between Jan Blachowicz and Magomed Ankalaev, however this fight ended in a draw. Quickly the UFC brass got on the phone and set up a clash for the vacant throne between the former world champion Glover Teixeira and the US-born Jamahal Hill.

The two American athletes Smith and Hill were booked in March 2023 for a top-ranked showdown. But UFC pulled Hill out of that match to face Teixeira for the title at UFC 283 on January 21 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Jamahal Hill and Anthony Smith agree to help each other

In the UFC, the 31-year-old Jamahal Hill has earned a three-fight win streak all won via KO/TKO. On his path to his title shot, ‘Sweet Dreams’ has stopped Jimmy Crute, Johnny Walker, and Thiago Santos. To help him get ready for Teixeira, Hill has enlisted a former opponent of the Brazilian veteran; Anthony Smith. Smith fought Brazil’s Teixeira in 2020 for five rounds before losing via TKO.

While speaking with Fanatics View, Jamahal Hill explained the enlistment. He said:

“I’ve talked with Derek Brunson, thinking of getting him out here. Antony Smith, ‘Lionheart.’ Yeah, in the phone call where we talked about it I asked him, I was like, ‘Hey, bro. I need you. If you’re willing to step [up] and help me and let me know what your experience of dealing with this opponent, I would more than appreciate that.’ And he was amazing, bro … He understands the game. He was like, ‘It sucks for me.’ He didn’t have any ill [will] toward me or nothing. He was actually happy for me.”

Even though Anthony Smith no longer had a scheduled match, he was happy for Hill for getting a shot at the throne. ‘Sweet Dreams’ added what the gameplan will be:

“I want to get him (Teixeira) out of there. That’s how I see it playing out. If I gotta take my time and beat him up and put it on him until I get him out of there, I feel like I can get him out of there, but if I don’t then just beat him up. Assert my dominance as the champion.” [Transcript courtesy of MMA Mania]

Jamahal Hill was sure to have a close eye on the main event of UFC 303 this past weekend when the light heavyweight title was on the line.

“Sweet Dreams” was unsuccessful in reclaiming the title at UFC 300 after he was stopped by Alex Pereira in the main event.

Saturday night saw “Poatan” secure another title defense, this time in a rematch with former champion Ji?í Procházka where he beat him even more impressively than the first time around.

Hill broke the fight down in a video on his YouTube channel where despite his hunger to avenge his loss and take back the title, he gave lots of credit to his former opponent.

Jamahal Hill Says Alex Pereira Looked Better Than Ever At UFC 303

In his breakdown of the fight, Hill spoke about a few things that he noticed from Pereira that were different to his previous fights inside the UFC.

Heading into this highly anticipated rematch, a lot was said about how Procházka was winning the first fight against “Poatan” until he was caught by his opponent’s lethal left hook.

Hill pointed out how Pereira was able to take control of the fight much earlier on this occasion and dominate the contest until it was over, unlike many of his other fights.

“Great main event, absolutely dominant performance by Alex from start to finish. I believe this is honestly probably the first that I’ve seen where Alex came out and won the fight from start until he got the finish. He didn’t have to come back and, it was still some adversity, Ji?í still presented his challenges in it but he adapted and he made good adjustments.”

Hill also spoke about the technique that Pereira used to set up his left hook that once again spelled the beginning of the end for Procházka.

Having been on the end of an advancing, lunging left hook from the champion in April, Hill analyzed how his former foe made the adjustment in order to land the strike as a counter whilst moving away from his opponent, different to what he did back at UFC 295.

“The adjustment that I seen that Alex made from that was the check hook. More so before, you see him in come like he steps in with that hook and he tries to land it leaning in and throwing his power forward. This time we seen him implement it from more of a defensive and a counteractive manner in this particular fighting sequence.

“The first hook that he landed on Ji?í, he hit him and you could see the eyes roll, you could see him get dazed a little bit. From there, he landed another one that kind of wobbled him, that kind of shook the legs a little bit and then he landed the one at the end of the round that put him out, that put him on his back. It’s beautiful adjustments bro, beautiful adjustments. He looked evolved, he looked like he’s taking more steps and getting better as a fighter.”

Paul Craig has called the subtitling of his interviews disrespectful to all Scottish people.

Craig is set to take on Brazilian heavy-hitter, Johnny Walker, on the UFC 283 card in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Craig is one of the very few Scottish fighters that are or ever have competed in the UFC and is the country’s most successful product in the promotion. The 35-year-old has been a part of some massive events in the United States and has put on entertaining fights since he entered the promotion back in 2016.

Still, Craig is left frustrated about how his interviews are handled. Craig, from Airdrie, has a thick Scottish accents but says it’s ‘disrespectful’ that he has to have an interpreter for some events along with his speech being subtitled

Our trash-talking is tremendous but the issue we have got is nobody can understand it,” Craig said to Off The Ball.

“It’s a bit disrespectful when you’re still speaking English and it’s getting broadcast to the English-speaking world and they are subtitling it because they can’t understand it.

“You do a post-fight interview. I’ve had an interpreter relaying what I’ve said. That’s disrespectful to all Scottish people.” (H/T The National)

Paul Craig vs.  Johnny Walker

Craig will have his hands full with Walker who is currently coming off an impressive first-round victory over Ion Cutelaba.

Walker has been up and down since first entering the promotion, but has consistently proved he can be extremely dangerous with all of his victories coming in the first round.

Craig though has one of the most dangerous BJJ games in the UFC and holds submission victories over Jamahal Hill, Nikita Krylov and Magomed Ankalaev.

Who will win Paul Craig or Johnny Walker?
