Khalil Rountree hit with two month suspension after testing positive for DHEA ahead of UFC 303

UFC light-heavyweight Khalil Rountree has been handed down a ban following positive drug tests.

Rountree had been booked to fight former champion Jamahal Hill at UFC 303, a fight which if victories could have seen him build a serious case to fight for the 205lb title shot. However, Rountree would release a statement last week in which he detailed he had tested positive for a banned statement and would be forced to withdraw from the contest

Yesterday the UFC would issue a statement which revealed Khalil Rountree’s tests had tested positive for “the exogenous origin of 5a-androstanediol, 5b-androstanediol and androsterone, all metabolites of DHEA.”

The statement would also state that Rountree had accepted a two month suspension but CSAD, the UFC’s testing agency, would cite a ‘massive oversight’ from a supplement manufacturer as the reason for the positive test.

“Rountree provided CSAD with shipping records, detailing that he received the supplement containing DHEA on May 2, 2024, just two days before he provided the May 4th sample. “Rountree also provided documentation from the owner of the clinic that sent him the supplement, reflecting that the company’s Brand Marketing Director sent Rountree some of the company’s ‘therapeutic blends’ supplements ‘without prior approval.’

“The owner described the mistake as ‘a massive oversight on our part.’ The evidence reflects that as soon as Rountree realized the mistake, he immediately notified UFC personnel, who immediately passed the information along to CSAD.

“CSAD consulted with SMRTL (Sports Medicine Research Testing Laboratory), who informed that Rountree’s May 4th sample result was consistent with the above facts and that Rountree’s short-term use of DHEA in the doses present in the dietary supplement did not provide any significant performance benefits.”

What’s next for Khalil Rountree?

While the statement confirms that Rountree unknowingly ingested a banned substance, athletes are still responsible for what they consume.

If a two-month ban is all he will receive, it should not impact his career too much. But it’s unclear if the UFC will look to rebook the fight against Hill, it would certainly be a big fight to miss out on for Rountree.

Khalil Rountree confirms exit from UFC 303 return fight

“I’m gutted to deliver this news to you all, but I will not be fighting at UFC 303 due to consuming a banned substance,” Khalil Rountree posted. “I did not do this intentionally and I am doing everything I can do get this situation taken care of.”

“I was using a personalised tailored supplement service from a company that I trusted who understood my limitations in what i can and cannot take,” Khalil Rountree continued. “They accidentally sent a blended supplement to me that contained banned substance called DHEA (which is prohibited at all times under the UFC anti-doping policy). Only after I consumed it were its ingredients brought to my attention.”

“I immediately contacted Senior Vice President of Anti-doping compliance,” Rountree wrote. “Jeff Novitsky and UFC Vice President of Anti-doping compliance, Donna Marcolini upon receiving that information to inform them of this matter. I’ve provided them with all of the information to show that this was not a matter of cheating or to enhance performance. Although DHEA is non-performance-enhancing it is a banned substance therefore I am under temporary suspension.”

“My sincerest apologies to you all and to Jamahal for this unfortunate series of events. This is a huge loss and an even bigger lesson.”

Jamahal Hill echoes calls for rematch fight with Alex Pereira He's gotta see me again

Staking his claim for a future re-run with undisputed light heavyweight champion, Alex Pereira in the immediate aftermath of his one-sided UFC 300 knockout loss, Jamahal Hill has insisted that a rematch against the Brazilian is in both of their respective futures.

Hill, himself the first product of Dana White’s Contender Series to strike gold inside the Octagon, headlined UFC 300 earlier this month in his Octagon return, after suffering a ruptured achilles tendon injury in the summer of last year.

Suffering a blistering opening round knockout loss to the Sao Paulo striker, Hill was stopped with a massive counter shovel hook from the Brazilian – after landing an inadvertent groin striker, which he later denied

And already booked for his return, Illinois native is set to co-headline a high-profile UFC 303 card at the end of June during International Fight Week, taking on surging knockout artist, Khalil Rountree – in a potential title-decider, claiming he took “zero damage” against Pereira.

Vowing to even stop the former middleweight champion in a re-run if afforded the opportunity, Hill has claimed that a fight against him is most definitely in the future of Pereira.

“Honestly, for me, now it’s not even about the gold strap, it’s about getting back to that fight [with Alex Pereira],” Jamahal Hill told The Schmo during a recent interview. “I wanna fight Alex again, just because of the narrative surrounding it [the first fight]. I know what I was feeling in there, and I know what type of timing it’s really on whenever we step in there again.”

“I don’t care, all I know is that Jamahal ‘Sweet Dreams’ Hill is in his future,” Jamahal Hill explained. For sure. Again. I don’t give a sh*t Schmo, if we gotta do it at 205 [pounds] or at heavyweight, he’s gotta see me again. That’s the only fight I care about.”

Welcoming the opportunity of a historic heavyweight division rise in search of a record-setting third title under the organizational banner, Sao Paulo striker, Pereira is currently dealing with a pair of toe fractures, however, has been linked with a UFC 304 return against Tom Aspinall at the end of July.

“I took no damage,” Jamahal Hill said on his official YouTube channel. “Most of the fall was me falling down. I remember everything. I remember looking up, seeing his legs. I remember him (Alex Pereira) coming in, trying to block, trying to reach for the underhook. He was able to land some shorts and kind of throw my equilibrium off on the other side, but I was coherent the whole time throughout, for the most part. So, I take this on. We moving forward.”
