James Krause, Jeff Molina

Jeff Molina was removed from the UFC roster and officially suspended by the Nevada State Athletic Commission on January 17th regarding his involvement with his ex-coach James Krause’s “gaming scheme”.

According to reports by ESPN, Glory MMA & Fitness coach James Krause was involved as an agent for offshore sportsbook ABCBetting.ag. Since his suspension from MMA in December, new evidence has come to light regarding fighters under Krause, and at the forefront, Jeff Molina.

Molina began training with Krause as far back as 2017, and his involvement in Krause’s betting scheme has been unveiled.

“Evidence has come to light, leading to allegations that respondent Jeff Molina was involved in some substantial way in the gaming scheme currently under ongoing investigation related to James Krause,” Nevada Attorney General’s Office representative Joel Bekker said. “Based on this evidence pursuant to NRS 467.117, executive director (Jeff) Mullen temporarily suspended the respondent’s license on Dec. 15, 2022. It is now being requested this suspension be continued pending the resolution of investigations and any subsequent disciplinary action.” (H/T MMA Junkie)

Jeff Molina Encouraged Betting with Krause

The specific details of Molina’s involvement are omitted, however, ESPN reported that he encouraged prospective members to join a gambling group that was run by Krause:

“He’s trained w/ a lot of the fighters, lives and breathes this sport as a coach/fighter, & at times has the scoop on injuries — non-announced matchups — how fighters look like in camp, etc.,” Molina reportedly wrote in the group. “In stocks, this is called insider trading, in MMA betting it’s called James Krause. For the last 6 months, all my bills including mortgage and car note have been paid via Krause’s picks. Do yourself a favor and join the VIP.” (H/T MMA Junkie)

Coinciding with Molina’s suspension on Tuesday, the UFC have announced that Molina has also been removed from the roster. He leaves the promotion with a 3-0 record in the UFC octagon and an overall professional MMA record of 11-2.

Once a rising prospect in the Flyweight division, Molina is now indefinitely suspended pending the ongoing investigation of the entire scandal. Hopefully, more details emerge, and we can get some more clarity on the specifics of Molina’s involvement. Until then, the potential that Molina once had is potential unrealized.

In just the past few weeks, Brandon Moreno was forced to leave his long-time coach James Krause ahead of his UFC title bout.

James Krause is at the center of an MMA gambling scandal. The UFC has banned any fighter who is associated with Krause either as a manager or coach.

At UFC 286, Mexico’s Moreno will battle his continuous Brazilian rival Deiveson Figueiredo on January 21 with the UFC flyweight world title on the line.

Brandon Moreno on finding a new coach

Brandon Moreno was able to capture the UFC flyweight throne under the tutelage of James Krause. Just weeks ahead of his title fight he has experienced a major stress to change gyms.

While speaking in an interview with Ariel Helwani on The MMA Hour, he said:

“What’s hard when everything started…I was in Kansas City when the news came out. I had a long conversation with James, he told me the situation, and in that moment, I decided to turn the page quickly and decide what I wanted to do…next Monday I was in Las Vegas. The good part, the gameplan was already done, so I was ready to go by myself with my coaches.”

Moreno chose the Fortis MMA head coach to help him get prepared for UFC 286. The Mexican-born athlete continued:

I decided to work with Sayif Saud, the coach of Fortis MMA. He’s very close with [my manager]…I feel very comfortable with him. It was very simple to work with him, and we closed this training camp in the best way possible.” [Transcript courtesy of MMA News]

Damon Jackson

Damon Jackson is set for the biggest test of his career when he faces Dan Ige in a co-main bout this Saturday at UFC Vegas 67.

Jackson is coming off of the best performance of his life that saw his knockout of Pat Sabatini in just 69 seconds, setting him up for a ranked opponent. Dan Ige is a difficult opponent for Damon Jackson as his volume striking and wrestling defense make him a force to be reckoned with. However, Jackson feels he is up to the challenge and re-iterated that sentiment in a recent exclusive interview with LowKickMMA

“He’s just another dude in my way and I’ve got to get past him to get to where I want to be. It’s a tough fight, but I like the fight a lot. Ige is very well-rounded so I’ve got my work cut out for me. My wrestling has got to be on point, my jiu-jitsu has got to be on point, and then obviously his striking is through the roof. I’ve been doing a lot of defensive work and I think if everything goes as planned, I should take care of business. It’s definitely going to be a tough fight though.”

Damon Jackson has also worked with James Krause, the UFC coach, who is currently in the middle of a gambling investigation. Jackson was scheduled to fight Darrick Minner, the fighter involved in the controversy last year, although the fight never came to fruition after Minner suffered an injury. Despite training at Fortis MMA in Texas, Jackson feels for Krause, as this situation develops.

“I feel bad because I know James [Krause] and I know Darrick [Minner] and they both have families and kids. It sucks that they did something stupid and I hate to see them get in so much trouble because no matter what happens, they are going to lose time with their family. It’s frustrating for sure because you don’t want to see that in our sport.

James Krause was the guy that I started training with when I first began training in MMA. I had my first few amateur first under Krause and I have learned a lot from him so it sucks to see what happened to him. I know he feels bad and he has kids, but it was just a bad choice on his part.”

Damon Jackson is 5-1 since returning to the UFC in late 2020 with his loss at the hands of Ilia Topuria. Jackson is looking to solidify himself as a contender in 2023 and that all starts when he takes on Dan Ige this Saturday. Check out the full interview right here:
