Lincoln, NB – “The Highlight” maybe on a two-fight losing streak, regardless Justin Gaethje has been training his whole life for UFC Lincoln’s main event.

The 29-year-old Gaethje is usually a softspoken mild manner guy. That is until he enters the cage; all bets are off at that point. However, his opponent in this weekend’s UFC Lincoln main event James Vick has managed to get under his skin quite a bit.

“I don’t admire anything about his fighting style,” Gaethje told LowkickMMA and other press in attendance for UFC Lincoln’s media day.

“[He’s a] Point fighter, constantly going backward,” Gaethje explained. “But he’s ranked number ten in the UFC, so he’s going to be a big challenge for me. I’ve got to go out there, I’ve gotta get the W. Be a little more patient than normal, pick my shots.”

When asked if he thought Vick had any game-changing talents that he should be aware of, Gaethje offered up some mild words of encouragement.

“He doesn’t like to get hit. He gets hit going backward, and that’s the worst way to get hit. So when I do touch him, he’s going to feel it.” [However] “He’s got good D’arce chokes, good guillotine chokes, I don’t need to stick my neck in one of those.”

Since entering the UFC “The Highlight” has gone 1-2. Although he has dropped his last two in a row Gaethje remains one of the most fan-friendly fighters competing in the sport. Be that as it may, ‘The Violent One’ has come under scrutiny for not using his wrestling skills enough during his losing streak.

When asked if he might bust out the old singlet Gaethje said, “No, I don’t know. I have no idea. I go in there, I’m definitely going to put pressure on him. “I’m going to pressure him with my feet. I don’t necessarily need to throw as much, but I’m going to pressure him with my feet, he’s going to be constantly going backward, which is a given with James.”

Gaethje’s plan to pressure “The Texecutioner” could bode well for the former WSOF champion. Beneil Dariush employed a similar strategy in his victory over Vick. Coincidently the last time the Texan tasted defeat.

Gaethje put it like this when asked if he is ready for the moment, “I’ve trained my whole life for this. Four years old I started training, in hindsight, for this August 25 [2018] verse James Vick.”

Justin Gaethje Vows To Humble James Vick At UFC Lincoln

Justin Gaethje is ready to shut James Vick up in Lincoln.

This weekend (Sat. August 25, 2018) Justin Gaethje vows to humble his UFC Lincoln opponent James Vick.

Gaethje was quite the knockout artist during his tenure with World Series Of Fighting (WSOF). He reigned as the promotion’s lightweight champion and racked up an undefeated record of 17-0.

In 2017 Gaethje signed with the UFC and had his inaugural fight with the promotion against Michael Johnson. He was able to pull off a second-round TKO win after an amazing back-and-forth contest.

Since then, however, Gaethje has dropped two straight via knockout. He’ll try and bounce back with a win over rising contender James Vick. Vick is riding a four-fight win streak and has finished all but the latter via stoppage.

There has been a lot of animosity between Gaethje and Vick leading up to their fight. The pair traded barbs at the UFC 25th Anniversary press conference. Speaking to MMA Fighting, Justin Gaethje said Vick doesn’t know what he got himself into:

“You can only say so many things, man,” Gaethje said. “At the end of the day, August 25, you have to get in there. They have to lock the Octagon, he has to get locked in there with me, and he’s going to have to deal with this.

“He’s in the UFC, he’s ranked No. 11 in the world — I’m not saying the guy’s not worthy. He fell into this, for one. It’s not like he was set up for this fight. Someone fell out and he stepped up, so he’s got the balls to step in there. I just don’t think he understands what he’s going to have to go through.”

Knockout Losses

Gaethje opened up on his recent two losses to Dustin Poirier and Eddie Alvarez. He claims to have respected those two top-ranked fighters too much due to their decorated records. Now, however, he believes his fight with Vick is more personal like his victorious UFC debut versus Michael Johnson:

“Not to diminish my last two fights, but I didn’t like Michael Johnson. I was fired up for that fight, and I really had a lot of respect for the last two guys that I fought, so it’s definitely different for me. Motivation has been different every day. He lit a fire under my ***, and I’m excited to go out there and extinguish it on August 25.”

Overall, “The Highlight” claims he’s going to humble Vick in Lincoln:

“I’m going to march him down and make him pay for everything that’s come out of his mouth,” Gaethje continued.

“It’s going to be the most terrifying night of James Vick’s life. He will wake up a humbled turd, and he won’t look at himself in the mirror the same for a few weeks, I can guarantee it. He’s going to be a smashed turd when I’m done with him.”

UFC Lincoln goes down live from the Pinnacle Bank Arena in Lincoln, Nebraska, this weekend (Sat. August 25, 2018).

Justin Gaethje Explains How He’s Changed Approach To Fighting

Justin Gaethje says he’s learned his lesson when it comes to fighting smarter.

Everyone loves a good old fashion slobber knocker.

That’s why fans love Justin Gaethje. But all good things come to an end.

In a recent interview with FloCombat, Gaethje explained why MMA needs to be a job to him. His job has become this way because he’s learned his lesson.

The self-proclaimed most violent man in mixed martial arts will take on James Vick in the main event of UFC Lincoln on Aug 25, 2018, at the Pinnacle Bank Arena in Lincoln, Nebraska.

But will fans see the same Gaethje they have come to know and love?

”Really, what I’ve been focused on is not becoming too complacent and not having too much fun out there,” Gaethje told FloCombat. “Right before that knee [against Alvarez], I landed some huge uppercuts and I got too relaxed. In my mind, he was going away and you cannot do that at this level, especially against guys like Eddie Alvarez. Same thing happened with Dustin [Poirier]. I should have learned my lesson, but I get in there and I get too comfortable.”

”I need to go in there and I need to be scared at all times, I need to understand that it can happen with one shot and that one shot can happen at any time, especially when I’m fighting guys in the top 10 of the UFC. So just staying focused, staying vigilant in my positions has really been my focus in this camp.”

Criticism From Fans

The former WSOF champion receives a lot of criticism for his fighting style or lack thereof. However, Gaethje admits although the criticism hurts, he can’t change who he is as a person and fighter.

He did concede he should approach MMA more as a job due to his recent losses, however.

”It’s disappointing more than anything. As much as I want to say I do it for the fans, I don’t do it for the fans, I do it for myself. I do it for my family. This is just the person that I am. I couldn’t change the way I fight if I wanted to. I can be more vigilant about staying in better positions at all times, I cannot become comfortable and I can’t have fun.”

”It needs to be a job to me. It can’t be a complete pleasure for me. I’ve got to go in there and I’ve got to make it a job.”

Gaethje entered the UFC with a perfect 17-0 record. He defeated Michael Johnson in his UFC debut but has since dropped his last two fights to Dustin Poirier and Eddie Alvarez.

Gaethje could be right back in the mix in the lightweight division with a win over the No. 10-ranked Vick.
