Corey Anderson won’t be getting the next crack at the light heavyweight title.

However, he might just be getting a shot at the No. 1-contender’s spot. ESPN’s Brett Okamoto reports that the UFC is working on finalizing a fight between Anderson and Jan Blachowicz to headline UFC New Mexico in February.

Anderson comes off of a big first-round TKO win over Johnny Walker on the featured UFC 244 preliminary bout of the night. With the win, Anderson extended his win streak to four. Now, he’ll take on Blachowicz, another man who has looked very impressive inside the Octagon as of late.

Blachowicz is on a two-fight win streak after knocking out Luke Rockhold in July at UFC 239. The Polish powerhouse finished the ex-middleweight champ in the second round with a thunderous uppercut. In his last bout, Blachowicz thwarted another middleweight’s debut at 205 pounds, taking out Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza in the UFC Sao Paulo headliner. Blachowicz won the scrap via split decision after a fairly uneventful 25 minutes.

The matchup between Anderson and Blachowicz certainly makes sense at this point in time. They’ll likely challenge the winner of Jon Jones vs. Dominick Reyes, which headlines UFC 247 in February.

Who do you think takes a bout between Anderson and Blachowicz?

Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza is considering dropping back down to middleweight after a failed light heavyweight move this month.

Souza suffered a decision loss to Jan Blachowicz at UFC Sao Paulo. Now, sitting at 2-3 in his last five fights, Souza admitted to MMA Fighting that he’s considering going back down to 185 pounds. However, a return to light heavyweight isn’t completely out of the question either.

“My manager and my team are talking which weight class I’ll fight next, so there’s a lot going on here right now,” Souza said. “We’ll make a decision really soon on what’s best for us. We’re looking at staying at 205 or going back to 185.

“Everybody suffers cutting weight, that’s life, but I’m 40 years old. I cut weight my entire life and maybe I was full of it, but I’m excited again, I’m happy, and I want to work. I’m still one of the top fighters of the division.”

Souza went on to explain that there was a lot he didn’t expect in his fight against Blachowicz, especially his size. The Brazilian found it difficult to take Blachowicz down, despite the fact that he trains with heavyweights regularly.

“I didn’t expect it would be so tough (to take him down),” Souza said. “I was also surprised by his size. I trained with heavyweights for this fight and this guy is really big [laughs].

“Everybody expected (Blachowicz) to go there and kill me,” Souza said. “I thought he would come more aggressive and try to knock me out, but he didn’t take many risks to avoid going to the ground. The result wasn’t what we expected, the fight was boring, but that happens sometimes.”

Do you think Souza should return to middleweight after his loss to Blachowicz?

Jon Jones Doesn’t Think Jan Blachowicz Is Ready For Title Shot

Everyone wants a piece of UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones.

While it’s likely Jones will fight up-and-coming challenger Dominick Reyes next, top-ranked 205-pounder Jan Blachowicz has also been making a case for a title opportunity. He comes off of a decision victory over Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza in the UFC Sao Paulo main event from Brazil.

Blachowicz called for his shot against Jones after the victory, which caught the attention of “Bones.” Jones took to Twitter to react to Blachowicz’s calls for a title opportunity, noting he doesn’t think Blachowicz sounds ready for the fight.

I don’t know man, you don’t sound too ready”

Jones is, arguably, the most dominant champion the sport of mixed martial arts (MMA) has ever seen. Having faced elite competition such as Daniel Cormier, Alexander Gustafsson, Rashad Evans, Thiago Santos, and more, Jones has yet to be legitimately bested inside of the Octagon.

Currently, Jones has successfully defended the light heavyweight championship two times in a row. Given how dominant he has been at light heavyweight, many have called for Jones to jump up to heavyweight and try his hand there. However, it looks like, for now, he’ll continue to pick off the contenders that continue to rise within light heavyweight.

Do you think Blachowicz is ready to challenge Jones for the title?

Despite a lackluster fight, Ronaldo Souza was proud of his effort against Jan Blachowicz largely due to his condition leading up to the bout.

Souza made his light heavyweight debut on Saturday against Blachowicz in the UFC Sao Paulo headliner. However, it was a dull and uneventful affair with very little action.

In the end, Blachowicz came away with the split decision victory as “Jacare” put in an underwhelming performance. However, considering he was ill leading up to the event, he believes he did his best given the situation:

“I told the UFC I was coughing in a way that I can’t stop coughing, and this was 20 days ago,” Souza said through an interpreter (via MMA Junkie). “We did a lot of exams and, first of all, I did treatment as if there was an allergy, and my doctor from Brazil here told (to do) a weird exam. … So 10 days ago was when I was diagnosed and on Monday was my last day taking antibiotics. I was going to give an interview, and when I did interviews I would start coughing and people would say, ‘What’s wrong?’ And I would say, ‘Nothing.’

“It didn’t get in my way. I was able to fight five rounds against a guy who was knocking everyone out in the light heavyweight division. I did my best to be here to fight. Unfortunately the victory didn’t come my way. It wasn’t a pretty fight. It wasn’t pretty for me, it wasn’t pretty for him, but I thought I won three rounds.”

Despite two losses in a row as well as four in his last six, Souza believes he can take many positives from the setback — even though he thinks he should have won:

“I fought well against a top-level guy,” Souza added.” He was knocking everyone out. I was able to use my strength and put him against the fence. He said that. I wasn’t able to impose my game and take him down. I tried to stop to attack in the fourth round because he hurt my leg, so that got in my way.

“… I’m going to be strengthened by this. It’s my first fight at light heavyweight, and I fought a guy who’s at the top, a guy who just knocked out a former champion in Luke Rockhold, and I went in there and did five rounds, and I won, but unfortunately I didn’t take it.”

What do you make of Souza’s thoughts?
