Islam Makhachev

Former UFC light heavyweight champion Jan Blachowicz believes Islam Makhachev will walk away with a win and the No. 1 pound-for-pound ranking on Saturday night.

After shocking the world with a second-round submission of Charles Oliveira in October, Islam Makhachev will defend his 155-pound title for the first time against the promotion’s reigning featherweight king Alexander Volkanovski. If that weren’t challenging enough, Makhachev will do so in Volkanovski’s home country as the UFC heads to Australia for the first time in more than three years. Ahead of the highly anticipated superfight, Blachowicz spoke with James Lynch in a LowKick MMA exclusive to share his prediction for this weekend’s main event clash.

“We will see, but I think Islam will take him down and control the fight on the ground and finish Volkanovski maybe before time, but he’s the top of top fighters so we will see,” Blachowicz said. “But if I had put my money, I would put for Islam. I think his wrestling is just unbelievable he’s gonna use it. Take him down, control him on the ground. Maybe submission. We will see.”

Khabib Nurmagomedov’s Absence Will Not Be an Issue for Islam Makhachev

Asked if the absence of UFC Hall of Famer Khabib Nurmagomedov in Islam Makhachev’s corner will make a difference, ‘Polish Power’ believes that the two have likely stayed in close contact throughout Makhachev’s preparations and will be there in spirit on Saturday night.

“I think they’ve [been] in contact. He called to him, say what he has to do. He will support him. Maybe not officially, but unofficial for sure, and mentally he will be in his corner so I don’t think that will change anything.”

Both fighters will walk into the UFC 284 main event with impressive win streaks. Islam Makhachev has scored 11 straight victories, seven coming by way of finish. On the flip side, Alexander Volkanovski goes into the champion vs. champion superfight with an incredible 22-fight win streak including wins over Jose Aldo, Brian Ortega, The Korean Zombie, and Max Holloway on three separate occasions.

Jan Blachowicz doubts Jon Jones

Former UFC light heavyweight world champion Jan Blachowicz has speculated that the all-time great Jon Jones will never return to the UFC.

‘Bones’ Jones vacated his light heavyweight throne years ago claiming he was moving to heavyweight. After a long layoff, he is set for a return to the UFC against Ciryl Gane for the heavyweight world title at UFC 285.

While speaking in an exclusive interview with Low Kick MMA’s James Lynch, Poland’s Jan Blachowicz explained how he feels about Jones’ comeback. He said:

“I don’t expect that he will come back. I think he will never come back inside the UFC. When I see him inside the octagon then I will believe that this fight is going to happen. I will not say anything until he stands up inside the octagon. “

However, if the fight at UFC 285 does go down, Jan Blachowicz is confident that Jon Jones can get the job done. He continued:

“If this fight is going to happen, I think Jon Jones is going to win … Heavyweight is something new for him so he will not risk too much. After a long break, he’s not going to feel very comfortable inside the octagon … We’ll see!”

Jan Blachowicz and Jon Jones

Jon Jones had cemented himself as an all-time great in MMA. ‘Bones’ captured the UFC light heavyweight throne in 2011 and set the record for the youngest champion in UFC history. Since then, he has defeated a long list of dangerous fighters such as Daniel Cormier, Alexander Gustafsson, Vitor Belfort, Rashad Evans, Quinton ‘Rampage’ Jackson, Lyoto Machida, and Maurício ‘Shogun’ Rua, among others.

In 2020, Jones vacated the light heavyweight crown and left the door open for Jan Blachowicz. Poland’s Jan Blachowicz knocked out Dominick Reyes in 2020 to capture the vacant light heavyweight throne.

Blachowicz has since lost the world title but is working his way back to the top of the division.

The UFC’s light heavyweight division is full of dangerous prospects but not a clear contender. On who should fight for the crown next, Jan Blachowicz said:

“Everybody should have one more fight … After this, they choose a new opponent for Hill. But you know, I believe, like last time, I deserve a title shot.”

Former World Champion Jan Blachowicz

Poland’s Jan Blachowicz earned the UFC light heavyweight throne when he defeated Dominick Reyes in 2020. At the time, the belt was vacant. Jan would later lose the title to Glover Teixeira, who would lose the crown to Ji?í Procházka, who then vacated due to a shoulder injury. For the second time in his career, Jan Blachowicz was given a chance to earn the light heavyweight title while it was vacant.

At UFC 282, Jan Blachowicz and Magomed Ankalaev fought with the vacant title on the line however the match would end in a draw. With no champion, the UFC selected Jamahal Hill to face Glover Texeira at UFC 283 in Brazil. Hill was able to capture UFC gold and now faces a long list of contenders.

Jan Blachowicz unhappy with Joe Rogan

Some comments made by UFC commentator Joe Rogan have not been received kindly by former UFC champion Jan Blachowicz.

The Polish-born Jan Blachowicz battled Dagestan’s Magomed Ankalaev for the vacant UFC light heavyweight world title at UFC 282 which ended in a draw. From the post-fight interview, Blachowicz is not impressed with how Joe Rogan handled things.

In the post-fight interview, Joe Rogan said:

“You went to raise Ankalaev’s hand after the fight. Is that because you believe that he should have won the decision? … To me that felt like you felt that you had lost the decision.”

Jan Blachowicz unhappy with Joe Rogan’s comments

Upon reflection after this December bout, Blachowicz is not happy. In an interview with MMA Fighting, the Polish athlete said:

“Joe Rogan, when he stepped into the octagon, he said for him I lost the fight. That was what I was thinking. He did a mistake that he say something like this to me after the fight. Because everybody who thinks that I lost the fight, watch only the last round. For me, a draw is a fair decision and seriously, I think that I was closer to winning the fight than Ankalaev. One more kick and it would be over, a TKO or if I would have defended his takedowns in the [fifth] round, stay a little bit longer on the feet, the fight would be mine … I watched the fight a couple of times, a draw for me is fair.”

Jan continued:

“Joe Rogan, he shouldn’t say something like this to me after the fight. I was stuck in the last round and then Joe Rogan says ‘that was a good fight but for me you lost the fight.’ After the fight, when I go to the locker room and I start talking with a lot of people backstage from different teams, they said ‘don’t say that you lost the fight, you didn’t lose this fight, a round is OK but maybe you won the fight. So don’t say it.’” [Transcript courtesy of MMA Fighting]

Jan Blachowicz is also not impressed with the excuses from Magomed Ankalaev after their draw bout. He added:

“Excuses. I hate when someone say it like this. It pisses me off when someone uses excuses. I never say that my camp was bad, I have injuries or something like this … I almost won the fight. Now he’s looking at excuses, why he was not so good in the fight. Why? Because I was very good in this fight. Because I don’t let him do what he always does in the fight. That was the reason. Now he says ‘I was injured, my camp was bad.’ Bulls***. I don’t believe in that. This is weakness.
