An undisputed UFC middleweight championship fight between defending division kingpin, Israel Adesanya, and the surging #2 ranked challenger, Jared Cannonier is slated to feature at UFC 276 on July 2. during International Fight Week – with the event set to take place at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Israel Adesanya, a native of Lagos, Nigeria – is set to attempt his fifth successful defense of the middleweight title, most recently landing a second career win over former titleholder, Robert Whittaker in the main event of UFC 271 in February of this year.

For Cannonier, the Texan powerhouse managed to land his second consecutive victory since a common-foe loss to Whittaker, stopping surging wrestler, Derek Brunson with a barrage of second round ground elbows on the undercard of Adesanya’s rematch win over Whittaker earlier this annum. The promotion confirmed the pairing during the official broadcast of UFC 274 tonight in Phoenix, Arizona.

Israel Adesanya, who plys his trade under the tutelage of City Kickboxing technician, Eugene Bareman, managed to unify the middleweight titles against Whittaker in 2019, before landing his first successful defense as undisputed best with a forgettable unanimous decision win over Yoel Romero at UFC 249.

Featuring on ‘Fight Island’ in September 2020, Adesanya stopped the then-undefeated, Paulo Costa with a second round knockout in Abu Dhabi, UAE – before landing another rematch win, this time against Marvin Vettori in June of last year.

Israel Adesanya has suffered just one loss in professional MMA

In his sole professional loss, Adesanya dropped a unanimous decision defeat to former light heavyweight champion, Jan Blachowicz in the main event of UFC 259 in March of last year in an attempt to become a two-weight champion held simultaneously.

Cannonier, the #2 ranked contender at 185lbs, boasts a 15-5 professional record, managing to rebound from a one-sided unanimous judging loss to Whittaker with a unanimous decision win of his own against Kelvin Gastelum at UFC Vegas 34 last August.

In other divisional victories, Cannonier holds a trio of knockout successes against Jack Hermansson, Anderson Silva, and David Branch.

UFC Middleweight champion Israel Adesanya will be defending his title against Jared Cannonier in an upcoming title fight.

The bout is still without a date, but sources have confirmed that both sides have signed the contract. Adesanya had last defended his championship against Robert Whittaker. He won that fight in a razor thin decision that many thought could have gone either way. Adesanya defender the championship against Whittaker, who was the same person he beat originally to obtain the belt.

Adesanya has yet to lose in the middleweight division as he sports a perfect 11-0 record in the UFC. His only loss has come by the hands of former light heavyweight champion, Jan Blachowicz. He suffered that lost when he decided to move up to attempt to become a two division champion.

Jared Cannonier had posted on his Instagram that he signed the contract against Israel Adesanya and that he had big news coming

Cannonier has also been on a great run recently. Cannonier has only lost once in the past 4 years. His only loss came too Whittaker back in October of 2020, he has since won his last two. He beat Kelvin Gastelum and the best version of Derek Brunson we have ever seen. Cannonier’s loss to Whittaker is also his only loss in the division, as he bursted onto the scene in the UFC as a heavyweight.

Cannonier is on the short list of fighters that has a knockout in three different divisions. He has knockouts in the heavyweight, light heavyweight, and middleweight divisions.

Adesanya has been calling for Cannonier to be his next opponent for a little bit now. Adesanya had called Cannonier “fresh meat” and has looked forward to a fight with him for some time now.

Who do you think will win the fight? Cannonier or Adesanya?

UFC middleweight Jared Cannonier believes Israel Adesanya will have to adapt his game plan against him if he’s to defend his title once more.

The UFC middleweight champion is expected to put his title on the line against ‘The Killa Gorilla’ sometime later this year. Adesanya has previously stated his intentions to face Cannonier sometime this summer.

Cannonier looks to have earned himself a title shot having beaten fellow top-ranked contender Derek Brunson at UFC 271 via 2nd round knockout. Adesanya defended his title that night and liked what he saw from the #2 ranked middleweight.

Having now won five out of his last six, with four of those wings being knockouts, Cannonier looks certain for a shot at the title. Adesanya has even labeled the UFC middleweight as the ‘darkhorse’ of the 185lbs division.

In an interview with Helen Yee Sports, Cannonier spoke of what he is expecting when is set to take on the champion later this year.

“All I know, without giving up too much of my gameplan, all I know is that it’s gonna be very competitive, more competitive than any other fights that he’s had in the Octagon. I’m sure it’s gonna be the same for me, but I’m gonna anticipate less. (It’s just about) answering any other questions that he’s gonna present to me, answering them with ferocity… I feel like he’s gonna have to change his approach, that’s for sure. He’s not gonna be stylebending in there. I plan on neutralizing his game and opposing mine, like I do with any and everybody.”

Adesanya has been eager to face Cannonier for some time with a fresh challenge on the mind of the champion. ‘The Last Stylebender’ has had to endure two rematches that have failed to excite him as much as the opportunity to face a new challenger.

Cannonier now brings the threat Adesanya wanted, with the UFC middleweight champion facing a former light heavyweight fighter that will bring destructive knockout power.

Jared Cannonier Planning Hometown Decapitation Of Israel Adesanya

Jared Cannonier

Jared Cannonier earned himself the next shot at the middleweight strap following his impressive TKO victory over Derek Brunson at UFC 271. Now Jared Cannonier is planning to complete the dream and take the belt from out the hands of ‘Easy Adesanya’.

On the same night that Robert Whittaker and Israel Adesanya battled out for the middleweight championship of the world, Jared Cannonier submitted himself as the next contender for that title when he was able to stop the re-surging Derek Brunson by TKO.

Jared Cannonier Looking Forward To Hometown Showdown

After promising to turn ‘Blonde Brunson’ into ‘Blood Brunson’ it appears Cannonier aims to live up to his prediction once more and turn the current middleweight champion into ‘Easy Adesanya’, he told The Schmo.

“I certainly did, I certainly did [live up to my last prediction],” Jared Cannonier said. “I’ve actually already come up with a new prediction for this one. We’re gonna turn ‘Izzy’ Adesanya into ‘Easy.’ It’s gonna be ‘Easy’ Adesanya.

“I’ve heard through the grapevine that it’s going down. I am next. Izzy is also a man of his word. From what I’ve seen, he also has the ability to choose his fights, and he has chosen me as if I’m some sort of Pokémon or something (laughs). Hey man, whatever it takes for me to get in there and get my shot at the title. I’ll put on that little Pikachu costume and go in there and shock the world.”

There is speculation that this matchup could take place in the summer at UFC 277 in July with the venue potentially being set in Cannonier’s hometown of Dallas, Texas. Something he considers to be almost perfect as he looks to become the middleweight champion of the world.

“That’s the perfect timing for me,” Cannonier said. “Knowing that I already had a fight after my last fight, you’re in shape from the last camp. Already have something to focus on, getting in the gym is easy as it always is because I love coming here. When you come in here [at The MMA Lab] and really focus on something, it’s like having a head start in a race.

“I’m sure Izzy gets a kick out of the prospect of whooping me in my hometown, but I also get the prospect of whooping him in front of my tribe, if you will,” he concluded. “Picking his decapitated head up and showing it to the fans out there in the crowd.” (Transcribed by MMAMania)

Nothing has been confirmed regarding the location, but expect an announcement in the near future.

Who do you believe would walk away as middleweight champion of the world once these two compete?

Cormier On Pereira’s Cannonier Callout: “What Are We Doing Here?”

Former UFC double champion Daniel Cormier has laughed off Alex Pereira’s callout of Jared Cannonier telling the fighter to be realistic.

Pereira took the opportunity in his post-fight press conference at UFC Vegas 50 to call out ‘The Killa Gorilla’ following his unanimous decision win over Bruno Silva.

The UFC middleweight is now 2-0 in the UFC having already defeated Andreas Michailidis in his spectacular UFC debut where he pulled off a flying knee knockout.

Since joining the UFC, it hasn’t taken long for Pereira to bring up his former foe Israel Adesanya with the Brazilian mentioning him often in the build-up to UFC Vegas 50.

Their rivalry goes far back to Pereira’s early days competing in Glory where he is widely known as the only man to defeat Adesanya having done so twice. Once via unanimous decision, with the second time coming in even more convincing fashion scoring a KO/TKO victory.

It now appears Pereira is looking for the quickest route possible to a title shot against the UFC middleweight champion. His latest callout of Cannonier seems ambitious in implying the former Glory kickboxing double-champion wants to fight Adesanya as soon as possible.

Yet Cannonier looks set for the next title shot himself meaning the Brazilian’s callout seems unrealistic at this stage. Especially considering Pereira has only had two fights in the organization and is yet to face a ranked opponent.

Cormier has now taken the opportunity to give his thoughts on Pereira’s callout on his ESPN show DC & RC. (h/t BJPenn.com)

“He goes and calls out a guy in Jared Cannonier who’s obviously fighting for the championship,” said Cormier. “Like what are we doing here? I mean, fight someone in the top 15 [first], fight someone in the top 10. Like, I get shooting for the stars, but the stars is anyone with a number next to their name at this point.

“Then again, it’s the wins over Izzy in kickboxing that gives him this sense of invincibility. He’s watching this guy that he knocked out run roughshod over the division, become a megastar and make tons of money. Ultimately, he’s trying to find the shortest path to get to where he feels he belongs. So, hats off to him. But, come on man! Let’s be realistic in the way that we approach our journey through the UFC’s rankings.”

It’s clear Cormier wants to see Pereira face a ranked opponent before he is even mentioned amongst the top contenders at middleweight. We may well see Pereira modify his preferred opponent should Cannonier be confirmed to face Adesanya next any time soon.

Alex Pereira hasn’t entered the Top 15 yet in the UFC middleweight rankings, but he has his eyes on top contender Jared Cannonier.

Pereira outlasted a tough Bruno Silva to kick off the main card of UFC Vegas 50. Despite having Silva badly hurt in the third round, Pereira wasn’t able to secure the finish and would settle for a unanimous decision victory.

Pereira is now 2-0 in the UFC after a decorated career in Glory Kickboxing. He also has a 5-1 record in MMA and seems focused on title contention in the UFC.

Pereira has discussed a potential third fight with Israel Adesanya in the UFC after beating him twice in kickboxing. However, Pereira thinks he’s ready for a fight with Cannonier next following Cannonier’s knockout over Derek Brunson at UFC 271.

During his UFC Vegas 50 post-fight press conference, Pereira explained his reasoning behind calling out Cannonier so early into his UFC career.

“I had talked about Jared Cannonier because he’s a guy that is next for a title shot,” Pereira said. “Some people have already talked about me and Adesanya, so why not Cannonier? I don’t think I’m talking too much calling out Cannonier.

“I had two great fights and I was able to showcase my skills. I didn’t even show everything that I go through my daily basis training with Glover Teixeira’s gym. I’m improving and evolving every day. Where I am in the division? I don’t know. I’ll let the promotors talk and they’ll know where to properly put me in.” (h/t MMA Junkie)

Before his win over Silva, Pereira passed his first UFC test with flying colors against Andreas Michailidis at UFC 268. He earned a violent flying knee knockout that put the rest of the division on notice.

Cannonier is expected to face Adesanya for the next middleweight title shot later this year. If he were to lose, a fight against Pereira may happen down the line.
