The Apex-held UFC Fight Night on August 24 finally has its headliner, and it’ll see a pair of top middleweights throw down.

With less than three weeks remaining until the Las Vegas card, the UFC revealed the main event for Aug. 24 on Tuesday, announcing that Jared Cannonier (17-7) will defend his top-five ranking against the fast-rising Caio Borralho (16-1, 1 NC).

The late-notice bout marks relatively quick turnarounds for both men, with the American controversially defeated by Nassourdine Imavov this past June and the Brazilian up-and-comer getting the better of Paul Craig the previous month.

Cannonier Looks To Rebound From Debated TKO Loss, Blemish Borralho’s Perfect UFC Record

When he makes his return for a second headliner of the summer, the #5-ranked Cannonier will look to quickly erase the memory of his difficult setback two months ago.

The former title challenger, who is one of just two fighters in UFC history to record knockouts in three different weight classes, has been pursuing a second shot at the 185-pound gold since falling short against Israel Adesanya in 2022. While that journey got underway well with wins over then-future champ Sean Strickland and Marvin Vettori, his progress was stalled in controversial fashion when referee Jason Herzog deemed him unable to continue following an onslaught from Imavov in their Louisville headliner.

A couple of months on from that widely questioned setback, Cannonier will return for redemption at the expense of Borralho, a Dana White’s Contender Series alum who has risen to #12 in the division’s top 15 courtesy of a perfect 6-0 record inside the Octagon. “The Natural” most recently secured his second performance bonus by knocking out Craig at UFC 301 in Rio de Janeiro this past May.

With this addition, the current fights expected to take place at the UFC Fight Night event on Aug. 24 are as follows:

  • Jared Cannonier vs. Caio Borralho (middleweight main event)
  • Neil Magny vs. Michael Morales (welterweight)
  • Angela Hill vs. Tabatha Ricci (women’s strawweight)
  • Edmen Shahbazyan vs. Gerald Meerschaert (middleweight)
  • Josiane Nunes vs. Jacqueline Cavalcanti (women’s bantamweight)
  • Dennis Buzukja vs. Danny Silva (featherweight)
  • José Medina vs. Zachary Reese (middleweight)
  • Viacheslav Borshchev vs. James Llontop (lightweight)
  • Wang Cong vs. Victoria Leonardo (women’s flyweight)

Nassourdine Imavov lands controversial TKO win over Jared Cannonier after brutal referee stoppage UFC Louisville

Former middleweight title challenger, Jared Cannonier will likely leave Kentucky feeling outdone by by heralded referee, Jason Herzog following his UFC Louisville headliner with Nassourdine Imavov — dropping a fourth round TKO defeat to the streaking Dagestani in rather controversial fashion

Cannonier, the current number four ranked middleweight contender, had been sidelined turning in a decision win over fellow former title challenger, Marvin Vettori in the summer of last year — which came as his second straight win after a close judging win of his own against former champion, Sean Strickland.

As for former MMA Factory staple, Imavov, the Russian-born French force can count it two wins in two tonight after UFC Louisville, following a prior majority decision win over Roman Dolidze back in February.

Sharing a largely striking exclusive affair with Cannonier tonight in Kentucky, Imavov will likely count himself lucky to land a fourth round stoppage victory via strikes, despite rocking the former with a winging right hook.

Catching an engaging Cannonier on his left blind side, Imavov attempted to seize the chance and finish the fight, and despite failing to fell the former title challenger, Imavov conituned to pour on the pressure — and despite the fact it appeared Cannonier was recovering on the feet, Herzog stepped in to stop the contest.

Following his second straight main event win on the trot, Imavov called for a September comeback at UFC Paris, welcoming a fight with the above-mentioned Strickland — whom he was defeated by back in January in a short-notice light heavyweight main event.

Former middleweight title challenger, Jared Cannonier has been touted as an ideal opponent to test the unbeaten, Khamzat Chimaev in his return to the Octagon, according to former divisional champion, Michael Bisping.

Cannonier, the current number four ranked middleweight contender, has been sidelined since extended his winning run to two straight fights back in June, turning in a decision win over fellow former title challenger, Marvin Vettori in a Fight of the Night outing.

Prior to that, the former light heavyweight landed a controversial split decision win over former undisputed middleweight kingpin, Sean Strickland – with the victory returning him to the winner’s enclosure after his title siege defeat to common-foe, Israel Adesanya.

As for Chimaev, the AllStars MMA veteran co-headlined UFC 294 back in October of last year, turning in a close, majority decision win over former undisputed welterweight champion and pound-for-pound number one, Kamaru Usman – improving his unbeaten record to 13-0.

And linked with a slew of opponents for his comeback from the likes of Paulo Costa, to the above-mentioned former champions, Strickland, and Adesanya, Chimaev should be tested by the returning Cannonier next, according to Hall of Fame inductee, Bisping.

“I would like to see him (Khamzat Chimaev) against a Jared Cannonier – because if he can’t take him down, and he can’t fix that problem with the cardio, then he’s going to have a real long-term problem going forward,” Michael Bisping said on his YouTube channel. “But who knows – maybe there’s a reason why he was running out of gas, OK? Probably because he doesn’t pace himself. He goes forward straight away, (and) wrestles.”

“Jared Cannonier, in my humble opinion, is the perfect opponent [for Khamzat Chimev],” Bisping explained. “There’s others out there. There’s Sean Strickland. They had a little moment in the gym, as well. So, Sean Strickland – Khamzat Chimaev, take my money. I’d love to see that one. But Khamzat – Jared Cannonier – that would be great.”
