Two title fights have been added to UFC 255. We have former bantamweight champion Cody Garbrandt moving down to take on flyweight champion Deiveson Figueiredo. In an explosive match up that’s sure to end in with someone laying on the canvas. While women’s flyweight champion Valentina Shevchenko is coming back to defend her title against Jennifer Maia.

ESPN’s Brett Okamoto broke the news that the world’s leading MMA promotion is planning both of these tittle fights for UFC 255, which will take place on November 21 at a to-be-determined location. UFC president Dana White confirmed both bouts are official. ESPN’s Ariel Helwani later added that Figueiredo has signed a new, six-fight contract with the UFC.

Figueiredo vs. Garbrandt has been heavily rumored in the last few weeks after Deveison Figueiredo destroyed Joseph Benavidez in their rematch on Fight Island to win the vacant UFC flyweight title. Not long after Figueiredo won the belt, Garbrandt said that he wanted to move down to flyweight and get an immediate title shot. His manager Ali Abdelaziz was able to get the deal done. Garbrandt, fresh off of a “KO of the Year” candidate against Raphael Assuncao at UFC 250, will now get a chance to fight for a second UFC title. (R/T BJPenn.com)

Flyweight Title

Both Deveison Figueiredo and Cody Garbrandt are coming off impressive stoppage wins leading up to this fight. With Figueiredo scoring an emphatic first round submission win over Joseph Benevidaz in an absolute shout out of a performance in July. While Cody Garbrandt beat the brakes off of Assuncao with a knockout of the year performance in June.

Women’s Flyweight Title

On the other side we have Valentina Shevchenko returning after 6 months, coming off her dominant performance against Kaitlyn Chookagian. Her opponent Jennifer Maia is coming off a great fight against Joanne Calderwood, where she flustered the Scott standing, before earning a submission victory early.

Who do you think will win these awesome flyweight title match ups?

Joanne Calderwood certainly didn’t have the best of days.

The women’s flyweight contender put her title shot on the line against Jennifer Maia in the co-main event of UFC Vegas 5 last night.

Despite a promising start, she was eventually submitted in the first round after Maia sunk in the armbar. As a result, she lost her title shot to Maia and to make the night even more forgettable, the Scot would faint backstage following the fight.

Fortunately, she seems to be fine now.

“Confirmed with Joanne Calderwood’s manager Danny Rubenstein that she fainted backstage after the fight,” ESPN’s Ariel Helwani wrote. “She is awake and responsive at a local hospital with her coach and fiancée John Wood. Quote in next tweet…

““She was getting checked out in the medical room and fainted while sitting down. John Wood caught her, they laid her down and carted her out on a stretcher. Heart rate dropped on the way there but stabilized now.” She’s awake now @ the hospital. They don’t know yet what caused it”

Calderwood Reflects On “Rough Night”

Calderwood would eventually post an update on Sunday morning as she reflected on what was a “rough night at the office” for her.

“Well that was a rough night at the office..congratulations to Jenifer Maia..I’m so grateful for my family, friends and fans that are here to help pick me back up in this crazy life we all share. It’s a fight, everyday we all fight, but it’s not everyday it goes our way. Thanks to all the @ufc staff, the medics and docs at umc..oh and my knight in shining armour @bigwoodmma702 sorry for scaring you babe! #nevergiveup”

Shevchenko Maia

It looks like we’ll be seeing Valentina Shevchenko vs. Jennifer Maia next.

Shevchenko was originally set to defend her women’s flyweight title against Joanne Calderwood at UFC 251 only to be forced out through injury.

Despite being assured of the next title shot, Calderwood decided to take on Maia in the UFC Vegas 5 co-main event last night. It was a risk that didn’t pay off as Maia earned the first-round submission win to effectively put herself next in line.

Shevchenko certainly believes that is the case as she tweeted soon after the fight.

“See you soon Jennifer Maia ??

Maia Responds To “Bullet”

Maia was made aware of the tweet in her post-fight interview and responded that it would be a pleasure to fight Shevchenko.

She reflected further on the fight and the prospect of facing Shevchenko later on (via MMA Fighting).

“I think ‘Jojo’ underestimated me a little bit,” Maia said. “She had a fight for the title, and then she got a short notice [fight] in two weeks. I think she did underestimate me a little bit.

“But I think Valentina is a smarter fighter. She’s the champion, and I think she’s going to study me very well. I don’t think she will underestimate me.”

UFC president Dana White would also confirm Maia would be next for Shevchenko and the Brazilian is confident in her chances.

“She’s very good everywhere but we’re going to find out when we fight,” Maia added. ”I’m feeling very good, I’m feeling ready and we’re going to find out.”
