Melvin Guillard woke up one morning and realized that he had to change his life. Then he did. It’s as simple as that, the UFC lightweight told MMA Fighting.

“I made a lot of mistakes after my father died,” said Guillard. “I made a lot of excuses for myself, and that’s something I don’t do now. I don’t make excuses. Everything I did, I did because I wanted to do. Nobody ever forced me to do anything. I used my dad’s death as a scapegoat to be able to get away with things I was doing, and that was wrong. My dad taught me not to make excuses, and using his death as an excuse is one of the most hurtful things I could have done.”

Some of Guillard’s personal problems are already a matter of public record, such as when he tested positive for cocaine following a loss to Joe Stevenson in 2007. But beyond just that, Guillard said, was a core problem with his attitude toward life.

Other fighters released from their contracts following their losses at UFC 125 were Marcus Davis and Antonio McKee. Both McKee and Davis were UFC Lightweights. McKee was making his UFC debut when he lost a Split Decision to Jacob Volkmann and Davis received his second loss in a row via KO from Jeremy Stephens. Usually UFC seems to practice a 3 strikes and you’re out method, but their Lightweight division is a bit overloaded with the WEC Lightweights moving in, which may have contributed to the two being cut from their contracts

No surprises here, Frankie Edgar and Gray Maynard earned Fight of the Night honors following their lightweight title scrap at UFC 125 in Las Vegas.

All UFC 125 post-fight award winner were recipients of a $60,000 bonus.

Despite no decisive winner, the competitiveness of Saturday’s main event was an easy selection for the UFC’s post-fight award. After an incredibly lopsided first round which Edgar lost 10-8 (and arguably 10-7), the lightweight champion bounced back to win the fight on one of the judge’s scorecards. In the end the final scores were 48-46 Edgar, 48-46 Maynard and 47-47 for the split draw.

("That’s it. Diet starts tomorrow.")

After getting put to sleep by Nate Diaz at UFC 118 — his third loss in four attempts — Marcus Davis announced his intention to drop to lightweight. According to MMA Junkie, the Irish Hand Grenade’s 155-pound debut will take place at the UFC’s stacked New Year’s Day card in Las Vegas against Jeremy Stephens, who publicly requested to be Davis’s first lightweight opponent. Stephens most recently lost a split decision to Melvin Guillard at UFC 119.

Another likely matchup for UFC 125: Resolution will be former WEC featherweight champion Mike Brown making his promotional return against Diego Nunes. Brown made a single UFC appearance as a lightweight back at UFC 47 in 2004, losing by first-round submission to Genki Sudo. He most recently scored a quick TKO over Cole Province at WEC 51 in September. Representing Nova Uniao, Nunes has put together a 4-1 record in the WEC, and is coming off of consecutive decision wins against Raphael Assuncao and Tyler Toner.

The tentative lineup for UFC 125 is after the jump…
