UFC featherweights Calvin Kattar and Josh Emmett will compete in the company’s return to Texas.

Emmett is looking to continue his winning streak to become the next featherweight title challenger. His last loss was against Jeremy Stephens when the UFC was still airing on Fox on Feb. 24, 2018.

After taking a year off, Emmett began his four-fight win streak, defeating Michael Johnson by knockout at UFC on ESPN 2 on Mar. 30, 2019. A win over Kattar puts Emmett in serious conversation to fight for the UFC featherweight championship.

Kattar is hoping to have a winning streak and remain a threat in the division. The “Boston Finisher” had to take almost a year off from fighting after his grueling unanimous decision loss to Max Halloway at UFC on ABC 1 on Jan. 16, 2021.

He returned, defeating rising featherweight contender Giga Chikadze by unanimous decision at UFC Vegas 46 on Jan. 15. A win over Emmett could make the UFC consider making him fight for the featherweight title next, especially if Holloway is able to reclaim the championship from Alex Volkanovski at UFC 276 on Jul. 2.

Joe Lauzon Had ‘Gut Feeling’ Cowboy Fight Wouldn’t Happen

Joe Lauzon had a “gut feeling” that his fight with Donald Cerrone wasn’t going to happen at UFC 274. Joe Lauzon had a “gut feeling” that his fight with Donald Cerrone wasn’t going to happen at UFC 274.

Lauzon and Cerrone were slated to compete in lightweight action on the main card of the pay-per-view (PPV) event from the Footprint Center in Phoenix, Arizona. However, hours before the event was to get underway, Cerrone was forced to pull out of the fight due to a non-COVID-related illness.

It was later revealed that Cerrone had a very bad bout of food poisoning that was not allowing him to fight. Speaking to Ariel Helwani on The MMA Hour, Lauzon opened up on the frustration of not being able to fight after putting in the work of a hard training camp.

He also revealed that, oddly enough, he had a funny feeling leading up to the fight that it was never going to happen.

“For two days I kept saying, I had this gut feeling that the fight’s not gonna happen. I’ve never felt like this before ever,” Lauzon said. “I feel like it’s the stupidest thing, I know Cowboy would show up with a broken leg and fight with a broken leg, but I get this weird gut feeling that the fight is not gonna happen.”

Lauzon revealed that his coach woke him up from a nap the afternoon of the event, letting him know the bad news. At 37-years-old, Lauzon has admitted that he’s winding down in his mixed martial arts (MMA) career, and doesn’t have many fights left. In fact, this fight against Cerrone likely could’ve been his last.

When asked if he plans to fight again, Lauzon said he’s undecided, but he’d hate for his career to end on this note.

“I don’t know. I have no idea. How sh*tty is it to have it go out like that, though?” Lauzon asked.

Fortunately, it has since been revealed that the Cerrone/Lauzon bout has been rescheduled for June 18 in August, Texas. Let’s hope that Lauzon’s gut feeling does not re-emerge this time out.

The UFC has a plan in place for a new date for Donald Cerrone vs. Joe Lauzon after Cerrone pulled out of UFC 274 due to an illness.

UFC President Dana White said in a recent interview with The Daily Wire that Cerrone and Lauzon will now go to battle on June 18th in Austin, TX.

“Cowboy is supposed to be fighting tonight, which would’ve been huge,” White said. “He decided to go eat at some taco place here last night and got food poisoning. So we had to move the fight to Austin.”

Cerrone and Lauzon successfully made weight but Cerrone suffered from food poisoning shortly after the ceremonial weigh-ins. The fight was removed from the card and Randy Brown vs. Khaos Williams took its place as the main card opener.

Cerrone is looking to get back in the win column following a first-round knockout loss to Alex Morono last May. It’s unclear if he intends to continue fighting past the Lauzon bout.

As for Lauzon, he hasn’t fought in nearly three years since his first-round TKO of Jonathan Pearce at an Oct. 2019 Fight Night event. He made his UFC debut back at UFC 63 against Jens Pulver before earning a new contract following a successful run on The Ultimate Fighter 5.

The June 18th UFC Fight Night event is slated to be headlined by a featherweight matchup between rising contenders Calvin Kattar and Josh Emmett. The fights will take place at the Moody Center in Austin.

Donald Cerrone has been forced to withdraw from UFC 274 after being struck down with a non-COVID illness just hours before the event.

Cerrone’s bout with Joe Lauzon has subsequently been pulled from the card. The welterweight clash between Randy Brown and Khaos Williams will now feature as the main card opener.

The news was announced during the UFC 274 early prelims, with color commentator Joe Rogan revealing that Cerrone had likely succumbed to food poisoning.

“They think what mind have happened is Donald ate something bad,” Rogan said (h/t MMA FIGHTING). “Because he was throwing up, he couldn’t keep food down. He felt terrible. They tried to give him time to recover but I talked to Dr. [Jeff] Davidson and it was just not going to happen.”

Had Cerrone fought tonight, it would have been his first Octagon appearance since May last year, when he was defeated by Alex Morono via TKO. The 39-year-old hasn’t had his hand raised in six fights, and in fighting Lauzon, Cerrone would have had a good chance of rebounding from what is the biggest slump of his career.

At this time, there’s no word of whether Cerrone’s bout with Lauzon will be rebooked.

What’s your reaction to Donald Cerrone’s last-minute withdrawal from UFC 274?

Joe Lauzon Believes There Is One Fighter Ahead Of Khabib Nurmagomedov In The Lightweight GOAT Discussion

Joe Lauzon

UFC veteran Joe Lauzon (28-15 MMA) has fought in the UFC for 16 years now. The Massachusetts native is scheduled to kick off the UFC 274 main card against another wily veteran in Donald Cerrone this Saturday night.

Ahead of Lauzon’s 44th professional fight UFC appearance, talkSPORT got a chance to ask him who he believes is the greatest UFC Lightweight of all time.

The 37-year-olds initial response didn’t mention anything about a particular Dagestani or a rather notorious Irishman.

BJ Penn. Always, always, always. I think BJ is the best.”

“I understand Khabib did great and he was undefeated, but to me, it’s just BJ… He was the first guy with amazing ju-jitsu, good offensive and defensive wrestling, great striking – could crack with both hands,” Lauzon explained.”

Joe Lauzon further illustrates why he believes BJ Penn is the Lightweight GOAT

With Khabib Nurmagomedov being vastly regarded as the best lightweight of all time, the Dagestani native retired back in 2020 with an undefeated record of (29-0 MMA) after beating the likes of Conor McGregor, Dustin Poirier, and Justin Gaethje.

Nevertheless, whilst not to discredit Khabib’s legacy, Joe Lauzon suggests his downfall come as a result that ‘The Eagle’ pulled out of scheduled bouts across his career and that’s one of the reasons ‘J-Lau’ believes why Penn is ahead of him.

“I think BJ is the GOAT. Khabib was a huge lightweight. He cut down and he pulled out of a lot of fights because he couldn’t make weight and things like that.

“So, I understand it’s a perfect record, but there’s also some things where he didn’t show up when he was planning to show up.”

“BJ on the other hand, he fought Lyoto Machida at heavyweight. How insane is that? He beat Matt Hughes and won the welterweight title. He fought GSP a couple of times.

“He definitely has had his fair share of bad stuff that has happened after the fact, but as far if we’re talking lightweight GOATS, I think it’s BJ Penn and no one else,” he concluded. (Transcribed by talkSPORT)

Joe Lauzon’s opponent, Cerrone has also been a UFC long-timer and is further regarded as a Lightweight great in his own right, with the UFC record for the most recorded finishes within the octagon with a total of 20.

Both fighters will be looking to make more history of their own.

Do you agree with Joe Lauzon? If not, who is the UFC’s Lightweight GOAT?
