John Kavanagh explains what factored into Conor McGregor’s latest loss and the adjustments he would make if they got a rematch.

McGregor lost to UFC lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov in the headliner of last week’s UFC 229 from Las Vegas, Nevada. McGregor’s coach spoke with Ariel Helwani of ESPN about what he would do differently should they book a rematch.

Kavanagh Explains

”If I could go back, maybe the mentality was a little too defensive,” Kavanagh said (H/T to MMAMania). “Conor’s a very offensive fighter and when his time to land was there – and we did have opportunities – it wasn’t there the way it was in the Eddie [Alvarez] fight, for example. The Eddie fight was off a big training camp for Diaz 2, which was off a big training camp for Diaz 1. So we had a lot of cage time.”

Ring Rust?

He continued by stating that coming into this fight, he didn’t think ring rust would play a factor but it did.

”This one, like you said, it’s almost two years out. I said I didn’t think ring rust would play a part, but I have to be honest, when I look at it now, when I replay it in my head, I do feel like it played a little bit of a part.”

What Went Right

The head coach brought up how McGregor didn’t quite get his shots off but thought that his takedown defense was on par.

“He didn’t quite get his shots off like he normally would. I thought defensively he did quite well defending a lot of takedowns, especially in round 3. But Khabib is amazing, amazingly effective MMA fighter. His style is suffocating, it’s relentless, and he does it better than anyone else.”

To Expand

Kavanagh believes that they won the third round and wants to spend more time on offense.

”In round 3 that we won, the shots that Conor were landing didn’t quite have the sting that they normally would, he wasn’t able to do things how he normally would,” Kavanagh concluded. “So yeah, if we could turn back time, I would have liked to spend more time on offense and capitalizing on those scenarios when they presented themselves, which they did.”

Conor Agrees?

Kavanagh wouldn’t say whether he thinks that McGregor would agree with his take on the mistakes in this fight. But understands that McGregor is focused on his pro-MMA career despite outside distractions.

”That’s what’s made him who he is, he is able to juggle things like that,” he said. “It’s just been part of his journey the whole way through that we’re always vying for his attention between his other interests. But he is very focused.”

As UFC 229 fades into MMA infamy, Conor McGregor’s coach John Kavanagh reveals their not-so-good game plan for fighting Khabib Nurmagomedov.

McGregor was submitted in the fourth round of his championship fight against Nurmagomedov on Saturday (Oct 6, 2018) night. By all accounts, McGregor and company thought they had the right game plan to defeat the unbeaten Dagestani. They were wrong.

Appearing on the latest episode of the Joe Rogan MMA podcast, coach Kavanagh revealed what he would do differently to prepare McGregor if given another shot.

“If there’s one thing I could change it would be that I was too defensive in my mindset for this training camp, Kavanagh revealed.

“But, Khabib has very specific types of takedowns depending on where he is, whether it’s shooting on the low single in the middle and on the fence.”

“Long before Conor was due to fight him I loved watching him. That’s kind of my area is the fence. I just love right from the Randy Couture days, how to use the fence and Khabib does it to a new level.”

Despite the loss, coach Kavanagh is a true professional. He harbors no ill will toward Khabib or his crew.

As a matter of fact, he lauded over one of the Dagestani’s takedowns. Fully believing that his AKA teammate Daniel Cormier may have had something to do with it.

“One of the takedowns on Conor, he hadn’t actually done it until the Iaquinta fight. It was nice that we got to see that high crotch, I see a bit of “DC” (Daniel Cormier) in that, the high crotch and then the trip on the far leg.

He did block it once, but he did catch him with it. So you know, there’s very specific takedowns, definitely for this training camp was the most specific that we went.”

Kavanagh also echoed what UFC President Dana White stated earlier today (Oct 8, 2018). That is, McGregor wants a rematch and he promises a different outcome.

“He’s screaming and shouting for the rematch within minutes. I do think round three showed promise. I would’ve liked to have changed things up a little bit, specifically a more offensive mindset. Defensively I thought we did quite well.”

Many fans noticed that McGregor did not look like his usual self during the main event. The SGB coach admits Conor lacked his usual spark but fully believes that’s because they focused on defense.

“Offensively we weren’t really were we usually are, and you know right when the fight was over I was thinking, I kind of went into this (trying) not to lose and not, to win.

“His shots weren’t as crisp as they normally are. He had opportunity to hit him especially in the third round, but something was off.”

Rogan finally asked Kavanagh if the two-year hiatus played a factor in the outcome. The coach conceded that ring rust did play a part. He added that they tried to duplicate the fight setting in the gym, but ultimately that’s impossible.

“Absolutely, of course, of course.

“We tried to mimic as close as we could in the gym, I brought in guys that he didn’t know and I would say this is fight day, He would do exactly what he would do on fight day to get that feel, but it’s still the gym.”

Conor McGregor’s coach questions what will happen to the mindset of Khabib Nurmagomedov if he loses a round in their upcoming title fight. The former UFC lightweight and featherweight champ is slated to challenge Nurmagomedov for the lightweight title at the UFC 229 event.

Khabib Nurmagomedov Challenges

Nurmagomedov’s latest bout was the biggest fight thus far in his pro-MMA career and he had to go through some hurdles to make it happen. The main event of the UFC 223 pay-per-view event as it went through three official changes.

It includes the UFC attempted to book Nurmagomedov against Tony Ferguson as well as Max Holloway and eventually fighting Al Iaquinta. He scored a decision win over Iaquinta.

Conor McGregor’s Coach Questions

McGregor’s head coach, John Kavanagh, recently said in an interview with The MacLife that he wonders what will happen to the mindset of the UFC lightweight champion. That change in mindset is if he loses a round. This is due to him never losing a round while competing in the UFC.

“It is interesting fighting an unbeaten fighter,” Kavanagh said (transcript courtesy of MMAFighting). “I’ve had a lot of my guys that went a long time unbeaten and then they have the loss. It’s always interesting to see, in that fight where they had their first loss, when things start to go wrong. It’s an unusual feeling for them and sometimes they struggle to deal with that.

“I don’t think Khabib has lost a single round in his UFC career. If you do lose a round are you going to be able to come back out with that same level of confidence in the next round? There’s a lot of interesting things to be played out in this fight.”

The UFC 229 pay-per-view event is slated to take place on Saturday, October 6, 2018 at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. The main card will air on pay-per-view at 10 p.m. ET.

The preliminary card will air on FOX Sports 1 at 8 p.m. ET and the promotion’s streaming service, UFC Fight Pass. Tony Ferguson vs. former champ Anthony Pettis in a lightweight bout is expected to serve as the co-main event.
