Conor McGregor’s head coach John Kavanagh says there is “no chance” his fighter competes at UFC 249 on April 18.
The event was supposed to be headlined by lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov vs. Tony Ferguson. Earlier this week Nurmagomedov was forced to withdraw from the bout due to the ongoing coronavirus crisis and subsequent travel restrictions in his home country of Russia.
Since his withdrawal, a host of 155lb fighters have offered to step in and save the card. McGregor himself took to Twitter and seemingly hinted he may be up for it, he said.
“I am in shape to fight right now! At the beginning of all this, I said to myself – I’m happy I don’t have an official fight booked. If I did, I would have consumed all the incorrect data to support me taking part in the bout, and I would have followed through, competed. And won.”
Unfortunately for fight fans, Kavanagh has now ended any hopes of McGregor fighting at UFC 249. Speaking to ESPN the SBG Ireland head coach explained the country is in lockdown and his fighter is literally unable to train for a fight, he said
“No chance of that. Ireland is on a pretty strict lockdown (due to coronavirus). Me and Conor have no physical interactions. There’s no physical interaction at the gym. Gyms are shut down.”
“To try and rush that together, I just don’t think it would be smart,” Kavanagh said. “He certainly isn’t fighting so that he has food for the next six months. That’s not where he is in his life.”
The renowned coach also revealed to ESPN that the original plan for McGregor was to fight fellow lightweight contender Justin Gaethje in July, however those plans have now understandably fallen through.
“(Gaethje) was certainly one of the ones that was being talked about,” Kavanagh said. “That was right up there.” (Transcribed by MMAJunkie)

John Kavanagh – the coach of Conor McGregor has advised Tony Ferguson to avoid fighting at UFC 249 unless he really needs the money.
‘El Cucuy’ was set to face Khabib Nurmagomedov for the lightweight title at UFC 249. Unfortunately the Russian champion was forced to withdraw from the bout earlier this week due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and subsequent issues with travel.
As of right now Ferguson is still set to fight on April 18 against an opponent to be decided. Top contenders Justin Gaethje and Dustin Poirier are believed to be the front runners to replace Nurmagomedov on the card.
Speaking to Ariel Helwani of ESPN, Kavanagh said the only reason he would advise Ferguson to fight at UFC 249 would be for financial purposes.
“I think the answer to that would come down to finances a little bit,” Kavanagh said. “I would like to think that Tony doesn’t have to fight to feed himself for the next six months. You always want to think that about such a long-time professional like this, but I don’t know, I don’t know his financial situation. But I would say that if I was his friend or whatever, that would be the only reason I would encourage him to do it. If he was saying, ‘Hey bro I need to pay rent, I need to eat, maybe this fight is not ’til the end o the year,’ then I would say, ‘Yeah, of course, it’s your job at the end of the day. There are front line workers doing a lot more dangerous stuff than MMA fighters are doing. So hey, it’s your job, go ahead and do your job.”
“But I don’t see why (the UFC) doesn’t say, ‘Let’s take April, May, and June, that’s a three month period, and we’re just going to say say that didn’t happen.’ So April 18 becomes July 18. In a weird way, you press pause on the world for three months.” (Transcribed by BJPenn.com)
Do you think John Kavanagh is right? Should Tony Ferguson avoid fighting at UFC 249 unless he needs money?
Tony Ferguson may have another potential opponent to fight at UFC 249 on April 18 in Conor McGregor. Tony Ferguson may have another potential opponent to fight at UFC 249 on April 18 in Conor McGregor.
The UFC is currently scrambling to find “El Cucuy” a new opponent following the news on Monday that Khabib Nurmagomedov would be stuck in Russia due to a cross-border travel ban that was enforced starting from that day.
Justin Gaethje has reportedly been offered to Ferguson since, though there is no news on whether either one has accepted or is willing to face the other. Dustin Poirier has also offered to step in and face Ferguson.
And when ESPN’s Ariel Helwani made a poll on Twitter on Tuesday asking what fans would do if they were Ferguson, McGregor’s head coach John Kavanagh replied.
“Maybe there’s a third option…”
Kavanagh, of course, is hinting that McGregor could step in to face Ferguson. But whether that actually happens remains to be seen.
McGregor is currently in Ireland and has been a strong advocate of social distancing and a lockdown in his home country amid the coronavirus pandemic. It is also highly unlikely the UFC will get him to fight on short notice given his star power.
But if the Irishman is willing to fight, that would be a different story.
Do you think McGregor will step in on short notice? Or is Kavanagh just trying to get wind fans up?
