Kulabdam Scores Controversial Decision Victory Over Ex-UFC Star John Lineker: ONE Fight Night 27 Highlights

John Lineker suffered his first loss in Muay Thai at ONE Fight Night 27, though the scorecards left some confused as to how exactly the former UFC fighter lost despite landing an early knockdown.

Lineker came out swinging big early and trapping Kulabdam against the ropes. A mere 45 seconds into the contest, Kulabdam hit the mat after eating a left hand followed by a short uppercut from the former ONE bantamweight MMA world champion.

Kulabdam answered the referee’s 10-count but was forced to face another barrage of strikes from Lineker. However, ‘Left Meteorite’ was more than willing to engage and caught ‘Hands of Stone’ with a series of stiff lefts that had Lineker backing away and trying to clear the cobwebs.

After a fast and furious first round, both fighters were much more measured in the second. But with the fight on the line, all bets were off in the third. Kulabdam looked to punish Lineker with a slew of body kicks as ‘Hands of Stone’ tried to bring his signature hooks over the top.

Kulabdam’s repeated attacks to the body appeared to have Lineker slowing down significantly, but because of the knockdown in round one, the Thai would likely need a finish to leave The Land of Smiles with a win.

… Or would he?

Kulabdam turned up the heat with 15 seconds to go, forcing Lineker to clinch up and ride out the remainder of the clock.

With the Thai unable to score a knockdown of his own, it seemed like ‘Hands of Stone’ would move to 3-0 in the art of eight limbs. However, the three judges saw things differently.

Official Result: Kulabdam def. John Lineker via unanimous decision.

Clearly, Kulabdam had to have earned a 10-8 round either in the second or the third for a unanimous decision to make sense. Unfortunately, ring announcer Dom Lau did not elaborate on the scorecards, leaving many, including ONE color commentator Mitch Chilson, scratching his head in confusion.

Asa Ten Pow is a veteran striker with experience in Kickboxing, MMA, and Muay Thai. ‘The American Ninja’ was on a two-fight knockout win streak in ONE when he was booked to welcome ‘Hands of Stone’ John Lineker to Muay Thai. The US-born Asa Ten Pow had a notable height and reach advantage over his Brazilian opponent.

John Lineker is a veteran of MMA, having had nearly fifty professional fights to his name. He previously captured the ONE world title in MMA with an impressive knockout. Lineker was able to score a thunderous knockout near the end of the second round against Asa Ten Pow. UFC and MMA fans will notice the signature pressure and flurries from Lineker that made him such a feared striker.

Lineker expected as much, prior to the fight in an interview he explained:

“Asa Ten Pow is a striking guy, a specialist in this area, and who is already used to fighting under the rules of Muay Thai. He is a very tough and technical athlete. I had the opportunity to meet him a few times backstage at ONE events, and he is a really nice guy. I am sure we will have an excellent fight.

“I always look for the knockout, and it certainly won’t be any different this time. I’m going to look for the knockout all the time, round by round, and I hope I can do it. I see myself knocking out Asa Ten Pow because that’s what I like and that’s what I do when I step into the cage.”

Hands of Stone’ John Lineker will be competing in his first Muay Thai match at ONE 168 on September 6. Naturally, the hard-hitting Brazilian is expecting a knockout victory.

The Brazilian slugger was inspired by Wanderlei Silva and always swings for the fences to put his opponents away.

MMA veteran Bibiano Fernandes set the record for most defenses in ONE history, ‘Hands of Stone’ put him down and took the title for himself with a stunning second-round knockout. After losing the title to Fabrício Andrade, he has taken a few more matches in MMA but now looks for success in Muay Thai.

At ONE 168, Lineker is set to face the US-born Asa Ten Pow. The 34-year-old ‘The American Ninja’ is a striker who has experience in MMA, kickboxing, and Muay Thai. Currently, in ONE he is on an impressive two-fight knockout win streak and is looking to make it a harsh welcome for Lineker into Muay Thai.
