Johnny Walker Won’t Change Hyper Persona After Upset TKO Defeat

Johnny Walker may have suffered a nasty TKO defeat in his last outing – his first under the UFC’s banner – but don’t expect that to change him.

Walker had a nine-fight win streak ended at UFC 244 when he was knocked out by Corey Anderson in the first round of their preliminary bout inside Madison Square Garden. The 27-year-old Brazilian prospect was a hot favorite to get a title shot at Jon Jones with a win over Anderson, however, those plans were quickly squashed.

Some believe that Walker’s hyper style prior to fights, which include goofing around at weigh-ins, high-energy walkouts, and even over-the-top post-fight celebrations, may have caught up with him. However, speaking to ESPN, Walker says he has no plans on changing his unique personality just yet.

“I got a standing ovation with this defeat,” Walker said. “The crowd applauded me and booed the other guy. So if they seem to like me, why am I supposed to change? I never joked around in a fight, I’m always serious. I like to show the public some energy, I know this is entertainment.”

As for his performance inside the Octagon against Anderson, Walker believes he was too conservative, and didn’t fight like himself. Next time, Walker won’t hesitate to be explosive.

“Next time, I will do what I did in my last fights [that I won],” Walker said. “I will do my job without waiting, I’ll play my game, fight with joy. The winning fighter is the one with the most attitude. I remember I threw a front kick, but I just wanted to see his reaction. I didn’t finish the kick. That was one of the things I learned: not hesitating, having confidence. I have to focus more on the psychological part. I have to eliminate what stresses me in the background. I could have knocked him out right there.”

What do you think will be next for Walker after suffering his first TKO defeat in the UFC?

It seems that Johnny Walker was dealing with a lot heading into his featured preliminary card bout against Corey Anderson at UFC 244 last week.

Walker came into Madison Square Garden and was TKO’d by Anderson in the first round. It was a big setback for Walker, who was being hyped up as a streaking contender who could potentially give 205-pound champion Jon Jones problems.

Speaking to BJPenn.com, Walker explained that, heading into the fight, there have been a lot of issues he’s been dealing with; including problems with his team, missing his family, and no longer having the motivation to fight.

“I am always very confident but I don’t feel the motivation to fight. I have been very far away from my family many times and I was sad with a lot of problems with my team, my coach and my life,” Walker said.

“I’m not happy to fight and it is very stressful for fight week. Some things go wrong and it impacts me a lot. I don’t let it try to affect me but I don’t feel very happy to fight or want to win. I just want to go back to my family and recharge my energy. I’m going to make a lot of changes now.”

It will be interesting to see where Walker goes from here. He did note that he’d like to fight the winner of Shogun Rua and Paul Craig at UFC Sao Paulo.

What do you make of Walker’s comments at this point in his career?

Dan Hardy caused a bit of a stir when he claimed that Johnny Walker was talking trash to Corey Anderson prior to their fight at UFC 244 this past weekend.

Hardy claimed he heard that Walker was telling Anderson, “Corey, I’m going to knock you out, I’m going to knock you out,” before they walked out to the Octagon. Of course, Anderson picked up the first-round TKO finish when it was all said and done.

Soon after Hardy’s claims made the rounds, Waker took to social media to call the former welterweight out on the story, claiming that it never happened. Even Anderson backed Walker up by saying it wasn’t the Brazilian who was talking trash to him, but rather some nearby fans. Now, Hardy has taken to social media to release a lengthy apology to Walker for the entire ordeal.

Here’s what he had to say:

“To Johnny Walker, and anyone else that was upset with the comments I made regarding the taunting backstage. After seeing the tension between the two fighters before they walked out, the reaction from Corey after the fight, as well as a conversation with members of the corner team, it was my understanding that mind games had been played.

“If I am incorrect, then I apologize. I didn’t say it as a negative characteristic of Johnny’s, but a part of the game, and the story around the fight. Those of you that remember me as a fighter will know that I loved a bit of trash-talking. In the unique atmosphere backstage, there was ample opportunity for fighters to interact before walking out.

“I was under the impression that something had taken place. It wasn’t my intention to pass on incorrect information. I’m sure Johnny isn’t the kind of fighter to taunt his opponents, and (I) apologize for giving you that impression.”

Walker has not responded to Hardy’s apology as of this writing.
