At UFC 244, light heavyweight prospect Johnny Walker suffered the first defeat of his career under the Las Vegas-based mixed martial arts (MMA) promotion’s banner. He was TKO’d by Corey Anderson on the featured preliminary bout of the evening.

However, according to former UFC welterweight title challenger Dan Hardy, Walker was talking quite a bit of trash before the fight started. He had this to share during a segment on BT Sport.

“So, with the secret service locking the place down when the President was there, they had to bring the fighters out of their dressing rooms early. So you’ve got Johnny Walker and his team, and Corey Anderson and his team, in the same corridor.

“And for five or ten minutes, all the time before the fight, Johnny Walker is going ‘Corey, I’m going to knock you out, I’m going to knock you out.’ So basically he was marinating in this annoyance for about five or ten minutes before.”

Walker took to Instagram to respond to Hardy’s story, claiming that it never happened. The Brazilian said he uses his pre-fight moments to focus on concentration, and would figure a former fighter such as Hardy would understand that himself.

“Hey @danhardymma , get your facts checked before saying stuff that is not true. I did not taunt Corey Anderson at all in the backstage before the fight and would NEVER do such thing. I know that moments like those, specially before the fight, are for focus and concentration.

“I really expected that a guy like you, who has been a fighter for many years, would ask me if this is true instead of just talking shit about me and painting a picture of me of a person that I am not. @coreya_mma @ricardoalmeidabjj you can come here confirm to Dan and the whole world how we were quiet and focused while waiting for our battle. Congrats and I will be cheering for you in the future.”

Even Anderson, who commented on Walker’s post, backed Walker up by saying that the Brazilian never told him anything in the tunnel before the fight. However, it was a fan behind Walker who was talking trash.

“Johnny didn’t say anything to me in the tunnel. It was a fan behind him on the other side of the curtain screaming that for 5-10. Thank you again for the battle warrior”

Hardy offered the following response to Walker’s post on Twitter.

“The fact that you do taunt people, as you did when Corey pinged you with that first punch, makes it all the more believable. If you didn’t, then I apologize for sharing false information. I had no reason to believe it wasn’t true at the time though.”

What do you make of the back-and-forth between Walker and Hardy?

Corey Anderson made a statement at UFC 244 on Saturday night — and his emotions got the best of him afterward.

Anderson faced Johnny Walker as a big underdog going into their light heavyweight contest. However, he would upset the odds by defeating the Brazilian prospect in a first-round TKO victory.

He would verbally unload on Walker after the finish and later apologized for his actions citing that he was emotional because of the buildup to the fight. “Overtime” felt that he was being set up to lose by the UFC and had expressed frustration that he wasn’t given a title shot because he didn’t move the needle.

To that, White responded in the post-fight press conference:

“So he came in here very angry this week,” White said (via MMA Fighting). “All these conspiracy theories, we hate him, we this, that and everything else, all this crybaby bullsh*t. We’re trying to get him beat. We can’t get you beat. You can either win or you can’t. We like Walker better or whatever the stuff he was saying.

“No, some guys move faster than others, you’re telling us what you deserve. Show us what you deserve. Tonight you showed us. Got it. Message received. Now we know.”

White also pointed to how Walker received a bigger ovation than Anderson during the Friday weigh-ins:

“You guys were there, were you not at the weigh-ins? Not one person clapped for him at the weigh-ins,” White added. “Walker got a pretty big pop when he came out. I’ll bet people will notice him next time, won’t they?

“You came out and you showed everybody. You did something. Now we’ll move on.”

Anderson Title Shot?

Following the fight, Anderson demanded a shot at Jon Jones. He also told the UFC to release him from his contract if they weren’t willing to give him one.

White wouldn’t guarantee one yet, but advised Anderson to go along with what the UFC offers him:

“I’m not saying you’re getting a title shot next or whatever,” White explained. “[Dominick] Reyes won, too, impressively. We’ll figure out what’s next for you and when your contract is up, if you still don’t want to be here, you can do whatever you want to do. In the mean time, take the fights that we offer you. Pretty simple.

“We’re not trying to get you beat. We’re not trying to get anybody beat. If you think you deserve a shot at the title, how am I going to get you beat with the No. 11 or 14th-ranked guy in the world or whatever he was tonight, if you deserve a title shot?”

Do you agree with White?

It was a disappointing loss for Johnny Walker last night (Sat. November 2, 2019) at UFC 244 from Madison Square Garden in New York City. Walker stepped into the Octagon in the featured preliminary bout of the evening, taking on Corey Anderson. Had he won, he would’ve had a good argument to challenge Jon Jones next.

Instead, Anderson made quick work of Walker, brutalizing the Brazilian on the feet before putting him away for good. Now, Walker has taken to Instagram to release a statement on the loss. Here’s what he had to say.

“Champion’s head. Never a defeat, always a lesson. Thanks for all suport …”

It will be interesting to see what’s next for Walker after suffering his first loss inside the UFC’s Octagon. He’s still an explosive young athlete who is sure to give many in the weight class issues.

For now, he won’t be lining up against Jon Jones next, but there’s still plenty of time for him to turn things around and get back on track for an eventual shot at the 205-pound title. Currently, the division favors Dominick Reyes to receive the next opportunity at “Bones’” title.

The man who many believed could give UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones a run for his money, Johnny Walker, was just finished in the first round of his preliminary headliner against Corey Anderson at UFC 244.

Anderson was able to survive the early pressure from the Brazilian, before stunning Walker badly with a combination. After some follow-up shots, the referee stepped in to call the fight off. Now, Jones has taken to Twitter to offer his reaction to Walker’s loss. Here’s what “Bones” had to say:

“There’s only one.”

“So much for the early Christmas present. This is exactly why I just let them light heavyweight do all the talking.”

“Yeah just like Izzy, I don’t get impressed too quickly. I’ve been around way too long, I’ve seen a lot of people come and go.”

Jones comes off a light heavyweight title defense over Thiago Santos this past summer. “Bones” edged his Brazilian counterpart via split decision. Now, he awaits the next challenger for his title as the 205-pound title picture develops. However, there’s always the possibility Jones jumps up to heavyweight to go after a second championship.
