It’s no secret that the MMA world stood still in the moments directly after Amanda Nunes knocked out Ronda Rousey in a dominating 48-second show of force in the main event of last month’s (December 30, 2017) UFC 207 from Las Vegas.

But one man who wasn’t afforded the luxury of stepping back to take in the shocking scene was Octagon analyst Jon Anik, who had to make a seamless transition from the UFC 207 pay-per-view (PPV) broadcast to the FOX Sports post-fight show mere seconds after Nunes stopped Rousey.

It was a harrowing scene even for the experienced broadcaster, and he elaborated on the unique circumstances in a recent appearance on MMA Junkie Radio, deeming it one of the strangest things he’s had to do on television following more than a year of hype and build-up:

“Having to go on the air 30 seconds literally after Amanda Nunes knocked out Ronda Rousey was sort of one of the weirdest things I’ve had to do on TV. We do it all the time, we do these post-fight shows, but we knew we were going to go quickly and it was really hard to just collect my thoughts after that moment. It was just stunning the way it went down.

“You had 400-plus days of build-up for Ronda Rousey’s return only to see it come crashing down in a matter of seconds. And it came on the heels of a classic between Cody Garbrandt and Dominick Cruz that went the full 25 minutes, so you thought you were settling in for a little bit of fighting, and you didn’t get it.”

Anik also had the presence of mind to give “The Lioness” her due in a time of flailing media critcism of Rousey, adding that he could have taken an entire show to praise Nunes:

“We could spend 30 minutes on Amanda Nunes if we just want to leave the show with that and talk about Nunes. She gave you enough in that fight and in that fight week with the way she handled everything, to talk about for 30 minutes. So big ups for Amanda Nunes.”

The week leading up to UFC 207 provided another unique scenario in that Rousey refused to do any and all media, making it like no other PPV card due to the nonexistent amount of appearances on which to gauge her return. Many felt the extra time allowed to focus on the fight would propel her to a win, but that wasn’t the case:

“We’ve got to be super careful on the broadcast, because potentially we’re calling the fights of these individuals,” Anik said. “So a lot of the noise you try to tune out. It’s interesting when it comes to this fight, because intangibly you had to look at those things for Ronda Rousey.

“So that was all we were able to focus on, we weren’t able to focus on anything cause she wasn’t giving us anything. And as far as a lot of people were concerned, that was going to be something that worked on her advantage. It didn’t.”

Finally, Anik touched on how Rousey was in new territory attempting to come back from her loss to Holly Holm at UFC 193, and that was a tall task even elite athletes have a tough time with. He recalled the example of Luke Rockhold – who was knocked out by Michael Bisping on a smaller comparative scale – and added Rousey didn’t exactly handle it well while noting he didn’t want to join the ranks of media members heaping criticisms on ‘Rowdy’:

“After the Holly Holm fight, one thing critically I did say – and maybe it’s not even that critical – was, ‘Here’s Ronda Rousey walking into her new life’. Like Luke Rockhold loses to Michael Bisping, ‘Welcome to your new life, bro.’ I saw him three months later. Luke just shook my hand, just shaking his head still. So, you walk back to your new life and not a lot of people can handle it.

“I don’t think she handled it well but certainly don’t look at me to pile on when the world is piling on her.”

Florian on Ronda Rousey: ‘She Needs Knowledgeable & Experienced Coach’

The dust has settled on UFC 207, but questions remain. The world waited over a year for the return of Ronda Rousey. “Rowdy” was once dominant inside the Octagon and had a larger than life aura to her. That all changed when she was brutally knocked out by Holly Holm in Nov. 2015.

Rousey’s seclusion from the public eye and mixed martial arts (MMA) media left many wondering about her mental state. After all, the former women’s bantamweight champion admitted to having suicidal thoughts on the Ellen DeGeneres Show.

Over 18,000 fans packed the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas to see how Rousey would fare in her comeback fight. She only last 48 seconds as she was torched by title holder Amanda Nunes. The fight was at best, lopsided and “Rowdy’s” lack of head movement and defense was apparent.

FOX Sports broadcast partners Kenny Florian and Jon Anik took to their podcast to discuss Rousey’s performance at the final pay-per-view (PPV) of 2016. Florian believes if “Rowdy” is to continue her fighting career, she’d be wise to find a new coach:

“I like Edmond (Tarverdyan). I spoke to him in various occasions, but he doesn’t have the experience for high level mixed martial arts. That’s my opinion. He hasn’t been keeping up with it. I just think she needs a knowledgeable, experienced coach, wherever that is. She’s going to need much better coaching, and a much better team around her. That’s for sure.”

Despite having over 400 days to prepare, Rousey didn’t offer anything new to counter Nunes’ aggressive style. Florian didn’t see any improvements from her last fight.

“She had 411 days to improve as a striker, and unfortunately for her, just wasn’t able to get it done. There really was no difference in what she did against Holly Holm. There was no head movement. There was no variety. There were no angles.”

Apparently Jon Jones’ positive USADA test is going to cost him.

UFC commentator Jon Anik spoke with co-host Kenny Florian on a recent episode of their podcast (listen above), about the Jones situation. According to Anik, Jones, who was pulled from UFC 200 and faces a number of other bank account-blasting consequences depending on how things turn out, could be looking at $30 million in loses as a result of this incident.

“The financial swing for Jones here is absolutely incredible. I’m sure for fans that’s not their foremost concern, but we’re sort of advancing the story a little bit here or at least talking about this several days after it happened. Antoine Walker, former Boston Celtic, made over $100 million in the NBA and blew all of it. Jon Jones is almost the opposite of that. The untold millions he isn’t realizing because he can’t make the walk in certain spots in his career. Now, they say he might have made from UFC 200 alone, so if he’s suspended for 12 months or 24 months, Kenny, that might be like a 25 or $30 million loss by ingesting whatever supplement he popped for.”

Jon Jones last fought against Ovince Saint Preux earlier this year where he won the interim UFC 205-pound title. When scheduled to fight Daniel Cormier to unify the 205 pound titles in the main event of UFC 200, Jones popped hot on an out-of-competition test administered by USADA, and was subsequently pulled from the event.

UFC’s Jon Anik Says Conor McGregor Should Vacate 145-Pound Title

jon-anik-2

While many have criticized Conor McGregor for moving up from the 145-pound weight class he is champion of to fight at 170 pounds in his last fight against Nate Diaz at UFC 196, UFC commentator Jon Anik has a different take on the subject.

Anik revealed what he feels “The Notorious” one should do when asked by a fan at the recent UFC Fight Club Q&A in Brisbane, Australia ahead of Saturday’s UFC Fight Night 85 event headlined by Mark Hunt vs. Frank Mir.

“In terms of the featherweight division, I’m never a fan of guys cutting a bunch of weight,” Anik said. “You’re seeing what Robert Whittaker has been able to do at 185 pounds even though he was very successful at 170. I don’t like guys cutting too much weight, so I’d kinda like to see Conor vacate the title and fight at 155 or higher going forward.”

Anik also addressed his bet with Diaz going into the aforementioned UFC 196 fight with McGregor, a bet that resulted in Anik having to get Diaz’s hometown area code — 209 — tattoo’d on his body.

“I think my days of tattoo bets are probably over,” Anik Said. “At least when it comes to picking pay-per-view winners.”
