Jon Anik claims he's not surprised by Jon Jones exit from UFC 295 through injury it was ambitious

Returning to the commentary booth this weekend for UFC 295, long-time play-by-play lead, Jon Anik has claimed he not surprised by Jon Jones’ withdrawal from a heavyweight title fight with former champion, Stipe Miocic, claiming a second fight this year for the Endicott native was “ambitious”.

Jones, the incumbent undisputed heavyweight champion, was set to headline UFC 295 this weekend at Madison Square Garden, taking on the above-mentioned, Miocic was forced out of his championship defense against the Ohio native this weekend, after suffered a pectoral tendon tear ahead of the bout.

As a result, an interim championship has been introduced into the division, with surging heavyweight contenders, Sergei Pavlovich and Tom Aspinall slated to feature in a co-main event clash in ‘The Big Apple’

Snapping his three-year-plus hiatus from the Octagon back in March of this year, Jones minted himself as the heavyweight gold holder, submitting former interim champion, Ciryl Gane with a stunning opening round guillotine choke submission win.

Jon Anik claims UFC 295 return was “ambitious” for Jon Jones

Sharing his thoughts on Jones’ exit from UFC 295 this weekend, Anik claimed that he was not surprised to learn of his withdrawal, claiming a turnaround twice this year following an extended hiatus was more than “ambitious”.

“[I’m] not surprised, with respect,” Jon Anik told MMA Fighting. “I thought it was ambitious to suggest that Jon Jones after that type of extended layoff would compete at UFC 285 in March and then be able to turn it round again in November. I just thought it was ambitious, with respect.”

“You know how seriously Jon Jones takes all of those championship fights,” Anik explained. “No man, nor woman has won as many title fights as Jon Jones and that really is the only biggest record that actually matters, but I have to wonder aloud, was this injury preventable, had he been in the gym for every minute that he possibly could be dating to that past title [fight] – and II’m not necessarily suggesting that that’s the right recipe for success either – but I’m not surprised that this fight did not necessarily materialize.”

UFC commentator Jon Anik gives his thoughts on Israel Adesanya’s recent loss to Sean Strickland at UFC 293.

To say Strickland’s recent title win was a shock is an understatement. While the American had proven himself as a competent top-10 middleweight, hardly any analyst, fighter or media member picked him to win.

However, he did Strickland would drop Adesanya in the first round and would continue to walk down and win a comfortable decision. Many have talked about Adesanya’s lack of performance rather than Strickland’s outstanding one.

Jon Anik gives his thoughts on Israel Adesanya’s performance

Talking to MMA Fighting,  Jon Anik would give his thoughts on the recent title fighting and would give an honest and fair assessment. Anik claimed that while Strickland was always capable, Adesanya could have been overlooking his opponent going into the bout.

“This sport oftentimes produces the unthinkable,” Anik said. “And anything can and does happen in some of these other sports, but just not with the frequency with which it happens in our sport. And there were a lot of people asking me if there was betting value on Sean Strickland, and I didn’t even necessarily know how to answer that question.

“Was he capable of this masterpiece? Yes. Can he execute like this again? I would think probably. But I do believe that the other side discounted him a little bit and didn’t necessarily understand what he was capable of, and they paid the ultimate price.” (H/T MMA News)

It isn’t clear if the UFC will pursue a rematch between Strickland and Adesanya, or whether Strickland will take on one of the other middleweight contenders.

Jon Anik believes Jon Jones booted Colby Covington from UFC 295 I take his word

UFC play-by-play lead, Jon Anik claims that he believes the claims from former interim welterweight champion, Colby Covington, that incumbent heavyweight champion and arch-rival, Jon Jones, vetoed his planned inclusion at UFC 295 in November, in a welterweight title fight with Leon Edwards.

Covington, the current number two ranked welterweight contender, has been sidelined from the Octagon since March of last year, defeating arch-rival, the now-retired, Jorge Masvidal in a heated grudge match over the course of five rounds.

And despite his continued absence from the Octagon and period of inactivity, Covington has been pegged to challenge current welterweight titleholder, Edwards for undisputed gold in his return – which was initially planned for Madison Square Garden in November at UFC 295.

However, according to outspoken Clovis native, Covington, he has been forced to rearrange a planned fight with Edwards, claiming former friend turned bitter enemy, Jones – whom headlines the pay-per-view card against Stipe Miocic, asked for his ejection from the card.

Jon Anik tends to side with claims made by Colby Covington

As far as the above-mentioned, Anik is concerned, there could very be some credence to claims from Covington – who also suggested the welterweight bout may be pushed to UFC 296 in December.

“Colby Covington suggested that Jon Jones doesn’t want to be on the same card with Colby Covington, so perhaps that’s the hold up,” Anik told The Schmo during a recent interview ahead of UFC 292. “There have bene rumblings that they [the UFC] want to do Leon Edwards and Colby Covington in Madison Square Garden and now this actually makes some semblance of sense.”

“Will they pivot to Belal Muhammad and Leon Edwards at Madison Square Garden? I don’t necessarily think they would do that,” Anik continued. “I think it’s more likely that they would delay Leon and Colby until December, but we’ll see, man. I really do take Colby at his word that maybe Jon Jones just doesn’t want him anywhere near that press conference in November at Madison Square Garden. But I do believe before the year’s out, we need a welterweight championship fight.”
