Until Jon Jones rose to prominence, Chuck Liddell was considered to be the best 205 pounder of all-time. At one point, the former light heavyweight champion was also considered to be the face of the UFC.

Jones then went on a historic title run, however, leading many to label him as the greatest fighter the sport has ever seen. Over the last few years though, “Bones” has had to deal with a plethora of issues outside of the cage, most recently being flagged by USADA (United States Anti-Doping Agency) for a potential anti-doping violation following his UFC 214 victory over Daniel Cormier.

As far as Jones’ issues outside of fighting go, Liddell feels as if “Bones” is ‘his own worst enemy’:

“He’s his own worst enemy,” Liddell said Monday on an edition of The MMA Hour. “And he was such a great fighter, I don’t know why he decided — it seemed like he decided in his offseason that one time to start using steroids. And obviously he’s got his time in court, I guess, still. I don’t know. But it seems real obvious with his increase in size and stuff. But I don’t know that he needed that, and it just seemed like he got maybe around the wrong people, got around the wrong ideas, and decided he wanted to (use PEDs), and now he’s gotten caught. It’s sad.”

Liddell also referenced Jones’ time away from the UFC between 2015-16 as a potential timeline for when he could’ve began using performance-enhancing-drugs (PEDs). During this time, Jones was dealing with legal issues, but he also became very involved with powerlifting, which added quite a bit of muscle mass to his frame:

“It looked like there was a huge change in a short period of time, that one break he took,” Liddell said. “It seemed like he grew a lot over that time. So, I don’t know. I seem to think that’s when it started, but I don’t know. He hasn’t come out and said anything. It’s another tainted supplement (for UFC 214), right? So I don’t know. He gets his time in court, we’ll see what happens with that too.”

Last month, it was revealed that UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones had failed a drug test prior to his rematch with Daniel Cormier at UFC 214, which ended in a third-round knockout victory for “Bones’.

Jones, who tested positive for a steroid, had passed previous tests, however, which is why the situation ‘doesn’t make any sense’ to Andy Foster, an executive with the California State Athletic Commission (CSAC):

“This entire situation doesn’t make any sense to me,” Foster told MMAJunkie, “It just doesn’t. We’ve got to figure this out because this is just crazy. We’re going to get to the bottom of it.”

“If you’re doing a steroid panel, then this drug is going to show up every time. The fact that it didn’t show up on (July 6 and 7) when he was tested before, that’s an indication that he was not on that drug at that time.”

Jones has had his fair share of issues in the past, but Foster feels as if this situation may be a bit different, which is why he’d like to take a deeper look into it before judging Jones:

“I know he’s already been extremely careless once in his career … but none of this makes any sense. That’s why I think it’s very important that we vet this and look at all the available evidence before we jump to conclusions and hang this guy out to dry.”

Prior to UFC 214, Jones served out a year-long suspension after he failed a drug test prior to UFC 200. Because of that, he could receive a much more serious punishment if he’s once again found guilty this time around.

Following Jon Jones’ positive test for steroids on Tuesday, fighters and fans alike were extremely quick to throw the book at “Bones”. As a two-time steroid offender and one-time cocaine metabolites offender, many fans and UFC colleagues of Jones are frankly fed up with his antics and he no longer has the benefit of our collective doubt.

While many were quick to pass judgment on Jones, the very organization that tested and notified him of the failure emphasized due process and the right for Jones to once again try and prove his innocence.

“We can’t comment on an on-going case, but importantly all athletes under the UFC anti-doping program are innocent unless and until the established process determines otherwise,” a USADA spokesperson on Jones’ most recent test. “As part of this process, Mr. Jones is given the opportunity to be heard, confront and cross examine the evidence and have the ultimate decision of whether he violated the rules or not be decided by independent judges. It’s only fair to let due process occur before drawing any conclusions about Mr. Jones.”

The news couldn’t come at a worse time for Jones and the UFC, as Jones was riding high on a spectacular but now possibly tainted third-round knockout win over rival and incumbent champ Daniel Cormier at UFC 214 last weekend. Meanwhile, the UFC is just days away from putting their biggest star in a boxing ring against a 49-0 Floyd Mayweather.

Certainly seems to be uncertain and stressful  times at the UFC headquarters.

Jones hasn’t been officially stripped of the title as of Wednesday night, but the possibility is on the table, alongside up to a four year suspension due to his prior USADA offenses.

Late last night (Aug. 22, 2017) shocking news broke indicating that troubled UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones had once again failed a drug test.

After serving a year-long suspension for a drug test failure prior to UFC 200 last summer, Jones returned last month (July 29, 2017) at UFC 214, defeating Daniel Cormier with an incredible third-round knockout to reclaim the light heavyweight title he had never technically lost.

However, it now turns out that Jones failed an in-competition drug test and he has been notified by USADA (United States Anti-Doping Agency) of a potential violation.

Few details have emerged regarding the situation, but a teammate of Jones, Frank Lester, who also happens to be a former The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) contestant, took to his official Facebook page to give his thoughts on the situation:

“I was just at dinner sitting next to Jon Jones when he got the phone call about this failed drug test,” Lester wrote. “Supposedly the story is between weigh ins and fight night he took a oral steroid. Which makes zero sense since it wouldn’t do anything at all for Jon to do so. It takes weeks for steroids to build up in your system to be a performance enhancer. Jon was devastated to say the least.

“This is a set up, straight up, no athlete would test clean his entire fight camp, and then randomly take some cheap f—king oral steroid betweens weigh ins and fight night knowing he would be tested once he got done fighting. This is a straight set up. They are trying to ruin this kids life. It makes no sense and Jon wouldn’t do it. Let’s see what happens with all of this but I truly believe Jon is innocent & I hope that all of you will give him a fair chance before you send hateful judgements his way.”

Obviously, it’s unclear how accurate Lester’s comments are, but it’s about all we have right now.

What do you make of the situation?

The unthinkable happened Tuesday after reports revealed Jon Jones had failed yet another test for performance enhancing drugs following his third-round knockout over former champion Daniel Cormier at UFC 214.

Rumors and speculation has run rampant over whether or not Jones will be stripped again for failing as was the case in his interim title win over Ovince Saint Preux last year.

UFC 200 was all set to be one of the most exciting cards of the modern era, up until fight week that is. Main event star and former undisputed light-heavyweight don Jon Jones sent UFC 200 in to a tail spin just 72 hours before it went down. A failed drug test dating back to mid-June saw ‘Bones’ removed from the pay-per-view card. Daniel Cormier eventually faced Anderson Silva in a short notice three round bout on the main card. Miesha Tate and Amanda Nunes were promoted to the main event.

Jones was distraught during the press conference held the very next day after USADA broke the news. Eventually we learned Jones and Brock Lesnar had both fallen foul to the tainted supplements that seem to be plaguing athletes lately. UFC president Dana White would later state both men could face shortened suspensions. Jon Jones may not be out of the woods yet though.

Lawsuit

BloodyElbow.com reports that one irate fan who attended UFC 200 has taken his case to court. Sean Slattery filed a lawsuit against Jones and his management team, first round management, in the San Diego supreme court. As told by Paul Gift on BE:

According to the complaint, Slattery is an MMA fan who purchased tickets to UFC 200 “for the express purpose” of watching Jones. He alleges, “Just before the fight, however, Jones was dropped from the fight card after officials learned that he had tested positive for banned performance-enhancing and/or masking substances. Plaintiff was thus robbed and defrauded of the value of the tickets, wherein he suffered both economic and non-economic harm, as a result of Jones’s actions in violating anti-doping regulations, and First Round’s complicity therein. In the alternative, Jones failed to disclose other controlled substances, and in doing so was negligent, to the relevant testing officials which again deprived Plaintiff of the value of his tickets.”022_Jon_Jones_gallery_post.0.0.0[1]

Yep, it’s for real

“Slattery goes on to allege that Jones and First Round Management “created a duty” to the ticket-buying public to act reasonably in advance of his fight. Including but not limited to refraining from the administration of banned substances to Jones or failure to disclose prescription medication to testing officials. Taking measures to ensure that ostensibly non-banned supplement mixtures did not in fact did contain banned substances.”

Jon Jones does have an obligation to declare everything he ingests during in-competition periods. Does this requirement by USADA hold weight with ticket buying fans in a lawsuit? That’s yet to be seen. Manny Pacquiao was recently sued by two Las Vegas residents over failing to disclose an injured shoulder before the Floyd Mayweather fight. It’ll be interesting to see where this one ends up going.
