Jonathan Haggerty vs. Wei Rui Results 171

The ONE Bantamweight Kickboxing World Championship was on the line in this ONE 171 bout between Haggerty and Wei Rui. It was a closely matched round 1 as both men had moments, but the southpaw Wei Rui launched a solid uppercut that was making a difference. Combinations from Haggerty in round 2 began building momentum for the British striker who added knees as a counter-offensive. The Chinese-born challenger was looking to attack with kicks on the open side but was often eating a cross when he tried to engage.

An aggressive Jonathan Haggerty in round 3 was looking for a knockout and finding success with his straight from the rear side. Wei was finding moments to counter but began taking several blows throughout exchanges. Knees up close and teep kicks from distance, Wei seemed to be getting visibly frustrated as he struggled to land.

The southpaw Wei was looking to mix punches with open-side kicks as round 4 opened and managed to hit the target repeatedly. But the sharp cross from ‘The General’ proved to be a game-changer as it often found a home. With just seconds remaining, the two fighters began taunting and trash-talking one another while still throwing a battery of punches and kicks. Round 5 was a dominant round for the British striker looking to defend his kickboxing world title.

Jonathan Haggerty, after five rounds of action, earned a unanimous decision victory to defend his ONE Bantamweight Kickboxing World Championship.

ONE Championship was back in Qatar this week, where the Lusail Sports Arena played host to a number of intriguing battles across four different sports.

Asia’s premier martial arts organization brought with it to the Middle East a deep lineup, filled with champions and plenty of prominent names in MMA, Muay Thai, kickboxing and submission grappling.

And there were championship stakes in the first of those sports that headlined ONE 171, with Filipino strawweight kingpin Joshua Pacio and American standout Jarred Brooks completing their trilogy by unifying the title.

While “The Monkey God” dethroned “The Passion” back in 2022, the rematch saw the belt return to Pacio after Brooks was disqualified for an illegal slam. Having since captured the interim strap with a first-round submission of Gustavo Balart last August, Brooks had his sights on regaining undisputed status.

But the American failed in that regard, with Pacio overcoming a strong start from his challenger to find the TKO finish late in the second frame.

Gold from a different sport was also be on the line in Qatar. After losing his Muay Thai strap in Denver last year, Jonathan Haggerty ensured he kept hold of his remaining title by defending the bantamweight kickboxing championship against Chinese challenger Wei Rui.

Elsewhere, former two-division KSW champion Roberto Soldi? made his long-awaited return, Kill Cliff FC standout Aung La N Sang added a 46th fight to his illustrious record, ex-bantamweight kingpin Bibiano Fernandes closed out his career with one last bout and submission grappling star Kade Ruotolo competed in MMA for the third time.

Superlek Haggerty Joe Rogan

Talk show host and UFC commentator Joe Rogan was thrilled to see Superlek Kiatmoo9’s stunning 49-second knockout against Jonathan Haggerty, to capture Muay Thai gold in ONE Championship.

Jonathan Haggerty vs. Superlek

The Thai striking star was going up in weight to challenge for gold against the British-born athlete ‘The General’ Jonathan Haggerty. Haggerty had earned titles in Muay Thai and kickboxing all via knockout and was going to be a major challenge for ‘The Kicking Machine.

The UK-born Haggerty had collected KO wins against fighters such as Muay Thai king Nong-O Hama, the MMA champion Fabricio Andrade, and top contender Felipe Lobo. Superlek was a fighter he had a prior loss against and hoped to avenge the previous defeat.

Jonathan Haggerty VS Superlek 2

Superlek, going into the match, had impressive wins over fighters such as Muay Thai champion Rodtang Jitmuangnon and multi-division kickboxing champion Takeru Segawa. The Thai-born athlete has an incredible background in the sport with over 130 career victories professionally with multiple Stadium Titles, among several others.

At ONE 168, Superlek made easy work of ‘The General’ with an elbow knockout just 49 seconds into the fight. It was a perfectly placed counter to end the contest. It was meant to be a five-round championship war but instead, it was done in a matter of seconds. Superlek now adds ONE Muay Thai gold to his impressive collection of accolades.

Joe Rogan

On his popular podcast, Joe Rogan was pretty excited by this knockout. He said:

“Superlek is this bad*** Muay Thai fighter. Haggerty has a certain hop, and he goes in. And then Superlek timed it. He tried it earlier in the round and didn’t catch it. And in this one, look at it, perfect timing — he gets his head off the center line. Oh my God, perfect elbow.”

Jonathan Haggerty VS Superlek 5

Panpayak Jitmuangnon and Superlek have faced each other in seven bouts throughout the course of their careers, with Panpayak winning most of their fights but Superlek has taken wins in the more recent bouts. The Thai-born Panpayak seems to be the only competition for Superlek. Joe Rogan, a fan of Muay Thai, would be all over it.

Superlek scores 49-second KO of Jonathan Haggerty with savage elbow strike - ONE 168 Highlights

Superlek needed less than a minute to finish Jonathan Haggerty in the ONE 168 headliner on Friday night in The Mile High City.

Emanating from Ball Arena, fight fans were treated to a fast and furious main event as ‘The Kicking Machine’ scored a shocking first-round KO against former two-sport king Jonathan Haggerty to claim the ONE bantamweight Muay Thai world championship.

Haggerty came out aggressive from the get-go and caught Superlek early with a nice left hand. That early success appeared to encourage ‘The General’ to move forward — a decision that would prove to be a massive mistake as Superlek timed Haggerty’s entry perfectly and unleashed an absolutely brutal elbow that caught Haggerty clean and sent him crashing to the canvas.

Haggerty attempted to reach his feet before the 10-count but was unable to do so, giving us a brand new bantamweight Muay Thai titleholder.

Official Result: Superlek def. Jonathan Haggerty via KO (elbow) at 0:49 of Round 1.

Jonathan Haggerty

The General’ Jonathan Haggerty has the biggest fight of his career upcoming on September 6 as he looks to defend his Muay Thai world title against Superlek Kiatmoo9 in the main event at ONE 168. This fight will take place an elevation in Denver, Colorado.

Jonathan Haggerty Stateside

The English-born Jonathan Haggerty has cut his teeth in the stadium and ONE Championship scene in Muay Thai. He’s fought various champions including wars against Rodtang Jitmuangnon. But since going up in weight ‘The General’ has found tremendous success.

Jonathan haggerty

The 27-year-old Jonathan Haggerty knocked out Nong-O Hama to capture Muay Thai gold, then KO’d Fabricio Andrade for a kickboxing title, and defended his Muay Thai crown via knockout against Felipe Lobo. Now, he faces the top-ranked pound-for-pound Muay Thai striker Superlek Kiatmoo9 at ONE 168.

Fighting in Colorado, USA is no joke. The elevation makes it a massive challenge for even the world’s best athletes. To better prepare, Haggery has spent weeks training in Denver. Speaking in an interview, the English athlete explained:

“We’ve left no stone unturned. I know everybody says this, but really, this is the hardest camp I’ve ever done. This is 13 weeks of solid, hard work, dieting, head down. We’re out here in Denver acclimatizing. I think it was a great idea to come out four weeks before the fight.

“We just wanted to get a head start. We wanted to get our foot in the door as soon as possible. You know, we wanted to get a head start. So we came out to Denver four weeks before to acclimatize, get used to it, no excuses. So when fight night comes, we’re more than ready.

“We’re so high up, and I’m trying to catch a breath after a hectic round on the pads. It’s pretty hard. The first day we got here, it was hard. But we’ve done so well to acclimatize so early, and we’re up in the mountains now running, doing our fitness.

“I mean, it’s an advantage, but mainly, it’s great for the mind, you know? Just to know that you are ready and one step ahead.”
