UFC lightweight prospect Jordan Leavitt has detailed the context that led to his fighter nickname being “The Monkey King.”

Leavitt has certainly made an impact in his short stint in the Octagon to date, first by earning a contract on Dana White’s Contender Series, and then by recording a slam knockout on debut.

Having gone 2-1 since, the 27-year-old has been thrust into a big opportunity in a notable matchup with fellow rising 155lber Paddy Pimblett. The pair are set to collide at UFC London on July 23.

While the fight perhaps doesn’t present a big chance for Leavitt to climb the lightweight ladder given Pimblett’s own brief tenure in the UFC so far, it has placed the Las Vegas native in a featured position against a Liverpudlian who has taken the fanbase by storm since arriving on MMA’s biggest stage last September.

With Leavitt’s latest booking will come a host of eyeballs and an increased level attention, something the elite wrestler is already experiencing in the aftermath of the bout confirmation.

One question that newly intrigued fans may want answered about the man who’s become a hot topic in recent days is: why “The Monkey King” moniker? Well, Leavitt gave the answer during a recent appearance on The MMA Hour with Ariel Helwani.

While you’d perhaps expect the nickname to come down to an obvious link between monkeys and Leavitt’s ability to climb all over his opponents on the ground, the context actually derives from a Jackie Chan film and a post-match celebration (something Leavitt loves nothing more than).

“That (nickname) actually came up twice. So, in middle school, I went to see The Forbidden Kingdom with my friends and they were watching it like, ‘Oh my gosh, that’s you!’ Then that kind of fizzled out after a few years,” recalled Leavitt.

“But then I was wrestling and my mum was videotaping it. After I beat the kid, I kind of like, walked on my knuckles and put the wristband in the center of the circle, and I walked off on my knuckles as a joke, and then they’re like, ‘You’re like a monkey,’” added Leavitt. “And I’m like, ‘No, the king of monkeys,’ (and they said), ‘Yeah, you’re like the monkey king.’ Then it’s been there since high school.”

For Leavitt, the nickname suits both his personality and in-cage actions.

“I don’t mind it. I think the imagery for like, eastern philosophy and religious thought, and like, kung fu history, the monkey king is the archetype in that part of the world. And I think it fits, I’m playful, I take things seriously, and there’s a little bit of arrogance in my style, and flamboyance. If feel like it matches the whole ‘Monkey King’ moniker.”

Leavitt hinted that he’s got a unique celebration in mind for The O2 crowd should he defeat England’s own Pimblett on July 23. Perhaps he’ll be bringing back the move that cemented himself as “The Monkey King.”

Jordan Leavitt isn’t just targeting one win over Paddy Pimblett ahead of their clash later this July — but two.

Leavitt was recently interviewed by The Schmo to preview his upcoming bout with Pimblett and talked about his ultimate goal of beating the Englishman twice, now, while they’re both young.

“That’s really the goal (fighting Pimblett twice). I could finish him in the first round, he has the excuse for a bad weight cut, we rematch in the T-Mobile Arena, I get Paddy Pimblett twice; let’s get this thing out of the way right now, right this time, this year.

“I don’t have to worry about it in the future, because I want Paddy Pimblett now when we’re both young, both in the prime of our lives, and I’ll get to beat him twice hopefully.”

Leavitt currently finds himself on a two-fight win streak after suffering the first loss of his career in June of last year.

He’ll take on Pimblett, who has had an excellent start to his UFC campaign with back-to-back first-round finishes.

Both men are currently in their mid 20s and are some of the most promising prospects the division has to offer. They’ll meet inside the O2 Arena on July 23 in London, England.

The show will be headlined by a heavyweight tilt between Curtis Blaydes and Tom Aspinall.

Currently, the card is shaping up to be one of the UFC’s biggest of the summer thus far. Darren Till is also slated to compete on the card against Jack Hermansson.

UFC lightweight Jordan Leavitt, claims that he will ‘handily finish’ his next opponent, Paddy Pimblett, in their coming July 23 matchup in London.

Prior to the UFC’s official announcement of their newest rising star, Paddy Pimblett’s next fight, many of those outside of the MMA hardcore were unaware of his opponent, Jordan Leavitt, but the Liverpudlians spotlight has not deterred Leavitt’s confidence.

The 26-year-old believes that when the time comes, the UFC’s use of him as a stepping stone for Pimblett to continue his ascension to UFC stardom will come back to haunt them.

“I think they think I’m an easy fight,” Leavitt said when talking to Ariel Helwani on The MMA Hour. “It kind of offended me but it’s all good. I have a few tricks up my sleeve so I’m pretty excited for this matchup.

“But if I watch this kid get chinned by these two guys, who are not the best, almost lose and then take victory from the jaws of defeat- I want him to fight a guy that doesn’t like to power punch. If you watch my fights I seems like I don’t like to punch very hard to the head. It would give Paddy a lot of chances to make up for a lot of technical weaknesses.”

Leavitt feels like the Scouser doesn’t present anything that he hasn’t seen before and ultimately, ‘The Monkey King’, is confident that he can finish Pimblett.

“But I’m not too worried about it, I think I’ve fought better strikers, I’ve fought better grapplers, I just haven’t fought Paddy Pimblett and he hasn’t fought me and I think this is gonna be egg on peoples faces when the fight comes; I think I’m gonna handily beat him.”

Leavitt brings a 10-1 MMA record to the octagon and has produced some exciting moments in his 3-1 UFC career.

UFC lightweight Jordan Leavitt is relishing the opportunity to bust out some moves in front of Paddy Pimblett’s home crowd this summer.

On July 23, the UFC will cross the Atlantic for its second UK-held card of 2022. The first is widely regarded as one of the most memorable events of the year so far, in large part due to the exploits of rising star Pimblett.

Making his second appearance inside the Octagon, the former Cage Warriors Featherweight Champion thrilled fans inside The O2 through his walkout, performance, and post-fight celebration.

He’ll look to repeat all of the above when he makes his way to London for the second time this year to face Leavitt. But “The Monkey King,” who knows a thing or two about post-fight dancing himself, recently gave a pretty bleak assessment of Pimblett’s skills when it comes to throwing some shapes.

When asked who has the better moves, him or “The Baddy,” during an interview with The Schmo, Leavitt suggested that the Brit is no competition to him in that regard.

“It’s gonna be, man. I just have better rhythm, I’m a little bit more loose,” said Leavitt. “But he’s got the spirit. He’s a bit confused, but he’s got the spirit. I kinda dig it.”

While The O2 crowd was graced with some ‘father of the bride on the dance floor at a wedding reception’ moves from their compatriot earlier this year, it seems they could be in for some more eccentric moves on July 23 should Leavitt have his way.

“I’m kind of excited, ’cause they’re (The O2 crowd) gonna get quiet when I finish the fight. And they’re probably gonna riot when I throw a twerk on them. So I’m excited, I’m really excited to meet him (Pimblett). I think he’s hilarious, I think he fight’s gonna be a lot of fun, and I’m intrigued to see how it’s gonna go.”

With four finishes in their five combined wins inside the Octagon, it seems likely that Leavitt and Pimblett won’t go the distance at UFC London. What’s even more likely, though, is that the victor will be putting on a memorable show for the UK crowd, both in-fight and post-fight.

Who do you think will be bringing out some victory dance moves at UFC London, Jordan Leavitt or Paddy Pimblett?

Jordan Leavitt ‘Very Flattered’, But ‘Offended’ By The Paddy Pimblett Fight

Jordan Leavitt

Jordan Leavitt was offended by the booking of Paddy Pimblett since he doesn’t’ see himself as a “can”, but he also sees the good in it as Pimblett is a very popular fighter despite only being with the organization for a short time.

Leavitt has a record of 3-1 inside the UFC, and is coming off a split decision win over Trey Ogden where he was able to show off his dance moves after a win. This is the hardest fight to date for Paddy ‘The Baddy’ while ‘Monkey King’ will most likely be looking to test his grappling.

Leavitt didn’t believe that he looked “bad enough to get. fight against Pimblett in his last fight against Ogden.

“Honestly I was a bit offended because he’s been kind of picking fights that are easy,” Leavitt said in a recent interview with  The Schmo  (Transcribed by  MMA Junkie). “I’m like, I must have looked really bad in my last fight to get this fight, so very flattered, kind of offended, but also excited.

In his two finishes, Leavitt had slammed his opponent (Matt Wiman) to knock him out and submitted Matt Sayles by an inverted triangle choke.

Jordan Leavitt believes that the fight with Pimblett will go on to be an “awkward decision”

“I’m kind of excited because they’re gonna get quiet when I finish the fight. They’re probably gonna riot when I twerk on them, so I’m excited. I’m really excited to meet him, I think he’s hilarious, I think the fight’s gonna be a lot of fun, and I’m intrigued to see how it’s gonna go. Statistically speaking, I think it’s gonna be submission,” Leavitt explained. “But if I had to put my money on it, I think it’s gonna be a very awkward decision. I think this fight is gonna be very strange.”

Pimblett has stormed onto the scene in the UFC and quickly became a fan favorite. His mix of trash taking and talent that he shows gets people excited. He has come back and won after being knocked down in both of his fights to start his UFC career. The Two will face off at the O2 Arena on July 23rd.

UFC lightweight Jordan Leavitt has revealed how he reacted when the UFC placed Paddy Pimblett in front of him as a potential opponent.

Not many unranked prospects have made as much of a stir inside the Octagon as Pimblett. The Liverpudlian, who entered the UFC having held gold in the renowned Cage Warriors promotion, has had just two fights on MMA’s biggest stage, but his victories and outside-the-cage antics have moved him towards the top of the mainstream scene.

Now, having dispatched Luigi Vendramini and Rodrigo Vargas in one round via knockout and submission, respectively, “The Baddy” is set for his toughest test to date in the form of Leavitt. The pair will collide at UFC London on July 23.

Despite some impressive performances in the UFC since earning a contract on Dana White’s Contender Series, as well as a dose of memorable post-fight twerking, Leavitt has remained a largely low-lying name among the casual fanbase.

With that in mind, many would perhaps suggested that “The Monkey King” would have relished the chance to face a prominent name like Pimblett at the UFC’s second visit to the UK this year.

While he ultimately accepted the assignment, Leavitt perhaps wasn’t as excited as you’d expect. During a recent interview with The Schmo, Leavitt revealed that his initial reaction to the booking was one of offense, rather than joy.

“Honestly, I was a bit offended because he’s been kinda picking fights that are easy,” admitted Leavitt. “I’m like, ‘I must have looked really bad in my last fight to get this fight.’ So, very flattered, kind of offended, but also excited.”

Since graduating through DWCS in 2020 with a first-round arm-triangle choke against Jose Flores, Leavitt has gone 3-1 inside the Octagon. Aside from a defeat on the scorecards to the high-flying Claudio Puelles, the 26-year-old has had his hand raised following a memorable slam against Matt Wiman and second-round tap-out versus Matt Sayles.

Now, having set himself on a win streak last time out with a split decision triumph against Trey Ogden, Leavitt will be looking to upset the odds in London, add a third consecutive win to his record, and add the first blemish to Pimblett’s UFC slate.
