A battle of bantamweight title contenders is being talked about for an upcoming UFC pay-per-view card. Former featherweight champion José Aldo and rising title hopeful Merab Dvalishvili are said to be meeting at UFC 278.

The news was first reported by Ariel Helwani of MMA Fighting. Although the fight is not yet official, this is the direction the UFC is planning to head. The UFC 278 event is set to be held on August 20 in the Vivint Arena in Salt Lake City, Utah.

Aldo sat atop the UFC featherweight division for over five years. He was the perennial UFC featherweight champion after carrying the WEC belt for years before that.

When Aldo lost his belt to Conor McGregor in 2015, he entered a slump that included five losses. Now at bantamweight, Aldo has strung together three wins in a row and could be in line for a title shot soon.

Aldo has been calling for a shot at champion Aljamain Sterling recently, but now with talks of this fight with Dvalishvili, it seems that perhaps another man could be getting that title shot. However, a possibility is that the winner of this UFC 278 bout could be the next one in line for Sterling.

Dvalishvili is a good friend and training partner of the champ. He has mentioned not wanting to face Sterling, but with a win over Aldo, he could be directly in title contention.

Sterling has mentioned a move to featherweight in order to make room for his friend if that situation could arise. Dvalishvili is on a seven-fight winning streak, with his most recent win coming over Marlon Moraes back in September of last year.

UFC 278 will be headlined by a welterweight title matchup between Champion Kamaru Usman and challenger Leon Edwards.

Who do you think wins the fight between José Aldo and Merab Dvalishvili?

Jose Aldo x Merab Dvalishvili is currently in the works for UFC 278

As per an initial report from Ariel Helwani this Tuesday night, the promotion are currently in the process of booking a bantamweight matchup between former undisputed featherweight kingpin, Jose Aldo, and Tbilisi native, Merab Dvalishvili for their August pay-per-view showcase; UFC 278.

“UFC is working on Jose Aldo vs. Merab Dvalishvili for UFC 278 on Aug. 20.,” Helwani posted on his official Twitter account. “Not a done deal at the moment, but that’s the current direction.”

A one-time bantamweight title challenger, following a pair of losses to both Marlon Moraes, and Petr Yan – Aldo has since embarked on an impressive three-fight winning run, turning back the clock with a trio of impressive striking performances.

Headlining UFC Vegas 44 back in December most recently, Aldo, a favorite from Manaus, managed to score a series of knockdowns en route to a unanimous decision win over Rob Font.

The unanimous judging success followed prior one-sided outings against both compatriot, Pedro Munhoz, and fellow South American standout, Marlon Vera.

As for Dvalishvili, seven straight victories has managed to land him the #6 rank in the official bantamweight pile.

Following a pair of losses to kick start his UFC tenure, Dvalishvili, a trainee of Serra-Longo Fight Team, most recently handed common-foe, the now-retired, Marlon Moraes a second round ground strikes loss at UFC 266 in September of last year.

A former Ring of Combat bantamweight champion, Dvalishvili holds a 15-second spinning back fist knockout win over current interim Bellator bantamweight titleholder, Raufeon Stots.

UFC Bantamweight Champion Aljamain Sterling may be on a collision course with Henry Cejudo for his next title defense.

Sterling is pondering his options regarding his next bantamweight title defense. He most recently outlasted Petr Yan via a split decision at UFC 273 earlier this year.

Former bantamweight champion TJ Dillashaw had been assumed to be the next man up, but Sterling also expressed interest in fights with Dominick Cruz and José Aldo during a recent appearance on The Joe Rogan Experience.

One prominent name left out of Sterling’s brainstorming was Cejudo, who recently re-entered the USADA pool and appears set for a return to the Octagon later this year. After getting word of Sterling’s comments, Cejudo blasted the 135lb champion on social media.

“Since I told this man what I would do to him on the sit down with [Daniel Cormier] he stopped bringing my name up,” Cejudo said of Sterling. “You a smart little hoe [Aljamain Sterling] relish and cherish my belt. Two of those so-called legends lasted one round and the other two.”

Following Cejudo’s attacks, Sterling hit back at the former champion in a recent tweet.

“Lol don’t get your speedos in a bunch cupcake,” Sterling replied. “Ask the media why they didn’t add the parts of me accepting a fight with you. But then again, you’re not even in the players bracket “Mr. Timeout, I need a break!”

Cejudo retired from the UFC following a win over Cruz at UFC 249. He has since hinted at a UFC comeback and a potential move to featherweight to challenge Alexander Volkanovski.

Dillashaw seems to be the most logical option for the next title shot against Sterling, but Cejudo seems open to a move back to his divisional stomping grounds for an opportunity to become a three-time UFC champion.

Jose Aldo’s Campaign To Title Shot Includes Messages For ‘Cheater’ TJ Dillashaw & ‘Clown’ Henry Cejudo

Ever since Aljamain Sterling’s most recent title defense against Petr Yan at UFC 273, the top contenders in the bantamweight division have all been clamoring for a shot at the champ.

Jose Aldo in particular has recently decided to stake his claim for a title shot, by making an official callout towards the current champion. Aldo is currently riding an impressive three-fight winning streak, having picked up clear and decisive victories over Rob Font, Marlon Vera, and Pedro Munhoz. He has now taken to social media to make his case.

“Aljamain, I am waiting for you to sign the contract for our fight,” Jose Aldo wrote on Twitter. “There is no doubt that the fans want to watch this fight. We are currently the 2 best bantamweights in the UFC.”

Jose Aldo blasts fellow bantamweight contenders

After respectfully challenging the champion Aljamain Sterling to a title fight, Aldo immediately went on to voice his distaste towards the other contenders. Aldo continued on Twitter to remind the UFC of the failed drug test of TJ Dillashaw which led to him relinquishing his 135 title, then immediately turned his attention towards Henry Cejudo who he claims “faked” retirement.

“Let the rest of the boys fighting each other and exchanging insults on the internet,” Aldo wrote. “In my opinion it does not make any sense to let a guy who got suspended for 2 years for cheating to come back and fight for the belt after winning a split decision in a fight I think he lost… The other one is a clown who faked his retirement just to try to raise his purse – as that did not work now he want to fight for the title after spending 2 years out of the game (and out of the USADA’s pool). … So let’s fight for the title while they sell popcorn in the arena. Whoever sells more popcorn fights with whoever wins our fight. Deal? Let’s do this, Champ!”

This is a first for Aldo, he is not one to make callouts in this manner, but it might be just what he needs to get a second chance at challenging for the bantamweight belt. But, Sterling went to Twitter to say “.@danawhite @seanshelby Hunter, when is our next War room meeting? Lots of money to be made! ???”.

Aldo’s current 3 fight win streak against contenders Rob Font, Marlon Vera, and Pedro Munhoz along with the noise Aldo’s has made on Twitter may have drawn the eyes of both the UFC matchmakers along with the fans to set himself up for an exciting title fight against Aljamain Sterling.

José Aldo has made a personal and passionate appeal to UFC Bantamweight Champion Aljamain Sterling to agree to a fight.

Now that Aljamain Sterling has cemented himself as the undisputed champion in the 135 lbs. division, title candidates have emerged to stake their claims to a world title shot.

Leading the pack is T.J. Dillashaw, who Sterling himself called out after he retained his title against Petr Yan at UFC 273. UFC President Dana White also said Dillashaw would likely be next for Sterling, and the trash talk between the bantamweights has already picked up.

Henry Cejudo
Henry Cejudo

Next is Henry Cejudo, who never lost the bantamweight title but rather retired from competition after retaining the belt against Dominick Cruz at UFC 249 two years ago. Cejudo has re-entered the USADA testing pool and met with the UFC brass, with Sterling’s name on the lips of “Triple C” on social media, if not the actual negotiating table.

Thursday evening, Aldo would be sure to inject himself into the center of the conversation by going straight to the heartbeat of the world title picture.

Aldo addressed “The FunkMaster” directly and with a detectable urgency found in his prose. He also shot down the credibility of both Cejudo and Dillashaw as viable title challengers in the process.

“Aljamain, I am waiting for you to sign the contract for our fight. There is no doubt that the fans want to watch this fight. We are currently the 2 best bantamweights in the UFC.

“So let’s fight for the title while they sell popcorn in the arena. Whoever sells more popcorn fights with whoever wins our fight. Deal? Let’s do this, Champ!”

“Let the rest of the boys fighting each other and exchanging insults on the internet. In my opinion it does not make any sense to let a guy who got suspended for 2 years for cheating to come back and fight for the belt after winning a split decision in a fight I think he lost.

“The other one is a clown who faked his retirement just to try to raise his purse – as that did not work now he wants to fight for the title after spending 2 years out of the game (and out of the USADA’s pool).”

Aldo’s final tweet made reference to T.J. Dillashaw’s 2020 USADA suspension for EPO. Dillashaw has “done his time,” if you will, and has since returned to the Octagon with a victory over Cory Sandhagen last July.

If you think Aldo’s callout is a long shot, you may be mistaken. Sterling himself said that Aldo was arguably the most deserving of a title shot, even though he admitted to being most intrigued by a fight against Dillashaw.

Furthermore, UFC President Dana White once gave Aldo a title shot at bantamweight before he even had a victory in the division. So now that Aldo has three straight wins, White could be persuaded to give the legendary competitor another go at the 135 lbs. strap.

What do you think? Did José Aldo sell you on the idea of a Sterling/Aldo title fight?

Marlon Vera Claims “Fat F*ck” José Aldo Declined Five-Round Fight

UFC bantamweight Marlon Vera has claimed that top-five contender José Aldo turned down the chance to go five rounds with him in 2020. UFC bantamweight Marlon Vera has claimed that top-five contender José Aldo turned down the chance to go five rounds with him in 2020.

After adding the first blemish to the record of rising star Sean O’Malley at UFC 252, Vera established himself as a contender, and had the chance to break through into the group of elite at 135 pounds when he shared the Octagon with legendary former featherweight champion Aldo.

The pair collided in the co-main event of UFC Vegas 17 in December 2020. Across three rounds, the Brazilian secured victory on the scorecards, marking a much-needed rebound from a three-fight losing skid, which saw him begin his bantamweight career at 0-2.

Since their bout, both men are unbeaten at 2-0. While Aldo has re-entered the title picture with wins against Pedo Munhoz and Rob Font, “Chito” has risen up the ranks with triumphs over Davey Grant and Frankie Edgar.

Now, with their paths threatening to cross again, Vera has looked back on his past date with “Junior” during an interview with TMZ Sports. The Ecuadorian revealed that Aldo turned down a five-round fight for two weeks prior, seemingly the main event slot ultimately taken by Jack Hermansson and Marvin Vettori.

“I would f***ing fight Aldo tomorrow,” Vera said. “Just because the way the fight went. Just because he declined to fight me five rounds. People don’t know that. December 19 we fought. They offered us a spot, December 5, in the beginning of the month, he declined it because he didn’t have enough time to cut weight. I guess he’s a fat f***, but it is what it is.”

The revelation perhaps explains Vera’s Twitter callout of Aldo following the Brazilian’s victory over Font last December. “Chito” encouraged the former champion to “be a man” and accept a five-rounder.

Vera Vows To Stop Aldo In Potential Rematch

Having climbed to #8 on the bantamweight ladder, it stands to reason Vera could be joining Aldo in the championship conversation soon enough, potentially paving the way for the pair to run their clash back.

If that happens, “Chito” says he won’t be allowing it to reach the judges’ scorecards second time around.

“I learned a lot from it, I took experience from it, but I just ran out of time. But, props on him. He was able to hold me down in that position. It is what it is. I don’t put excuses, never. So, if we met him again, I’m stopping him,” asserted Vera.

Before thinking about a potential second clash with Aldo, Vera will have to join the Brazilian inside the bantamweight top five by dispatching Rob Font in what will be his first main event on April 30.
