Former UFC featherweight champion, Jose Aldo seems to be all in for a potential April showdown against former bantamweight titleholder, Cody Garbrandt — urging the Ohio puncher to sign the contract after a recent callout was issued to him.

Scoring his first victory since his move to 135-pounds back in December of 2019, Manaus favourite, Aldo snapped a three-fight skid — besting Ecuadorian finisher, Marlon Vera over three-rounds at UFC Vegas 17 in December.

Returning to winning ways, Aldo had dropped his final featherweight appearance to now-champion, Alexander Volkanovski in a hometown affair, prior to a close decision defeat to compatriot, Marlon Moraes at UFC 245.

Despite recent form, the veteran striker was inserted into a vacant bantamweight title fight at UFC 251 on ‘Fight Island’ last July, succumbing to fifth rounds strikes when paired with promotional-perfect standout, Petr Yan.

For former division kingpin, Garbrandt, a recent move to New Jersey to take his camp under the scrutiny of Mark Henry — brought with it a snapping of his own three-fight slide. Dropping the bantamweight crown to former teammate, T.J. Dillashaw at UFC 217 — Garbrandt would go on to suffer two consecutive knockout defeats to Dillashaw once again, before a first-round stoppage loss to Aldo’s compatriot, Pedro Munhoz.

Set to finally return after a debilitating case of COVID-19 as well as suffering a torn vein in his bicep which led to multiple blood clots, Garbrandt recently called for an April showcase against Aldo.

I am creating the life of my dreams,” Garbrandt wrote. “Excited to get back in that steel cage @josealdojunior (Jose Aldo) how’s April sound? #VisionQuest

In response to Garbrandt, Aldo posted a story on his official Instagram account, gauging the fan interest in a potential matchup against the former champion — before urging him to “sign the contract“.

Echoing Aldo’s calls for contracst to be issued, Garbrandt asked UFC president, Dana White to put the fight together.

We doing this @josealdojunior @danawhite?? We both say send the contract.

Following his highlight-reel, buzzer-beating knockout of Raphael Assuncao at UFC 250 in June, Garbrandt was expected to challenge Deiveson Figueiredo for the undisputed flyweight title at UFC 255 in November, until Alex Perez replaced him on short-notice amid his novel coronavirus and bicep injury issues — with his flyweight division bow put on the backburner as a resultAldo.

Cody Garbrandt is still targeting a fight with Jose Aldo.

The former UFC bantamweight champion previously called for a fight with Aldo earlier this month as his planned flyweight title shot will likely be on the back burner as current champion Deiveson Figueiredo is set to take on Brandon Moreno in a rematch later this year.

And having dealt with COVID-19 as well as injuries in recent months, “No Love” is now healthy and looking to fight Aldo in April in the meantime.

“I’m targeting a fight with Jose Aldo in April – that’s what I’m shooting for,” Garbrandt told MMA Fighting. “I had the title fight at 125, I’m the next in line, but obviously they have to do the rematch. I’m not going to sit and wait eight months. It’s not something I want to do. So I feel like staying at 135 and fighting Jose Aldo will be a great matchup. It’s a fight a lot of fans can get behind.

“I feel my best performances are in front of me, so why not challenge yourself with a Jose Aldo? He’s still dangerous. He’s still there. He’s down in [my] weight class now. He’s coming off a win, I’m coming off a win. We’re both in the top five, so I think it’s the perfect fight to make.”

Garbrandt snapped a three-fight losing skid following an emphatic second-round knockout of Raphael Assuncao last summer. Aldo did the same when he outpointed Marlon Vera at UFC Vegas 17 last month.

And while Garbrandt respects Aldo and his overall body of work, he still feels he is the superior fighter.

“Aldo’s game,” Garbrandt said. “You don’t get those accolades that he’s achieved, the accomplishments that he’s achieved without being one of the best. That’s what I’m here to prove, that I am the best. I just see him as an opponent. It’s business.

“I’ve got a lot of respect for him, but I know I’m the far superior fighter skill wise, speed, power, conditioning, and that’s what I want to test myself with. I know I’ll knock him out. I’m excited for that fight.”

Garbrandt even has his plan for 2021 mapped out following a potential win over Aldo.

“I’m not going to sit and wait,” Garbrandt added. “I’m not going to cut to 25 for a contender shot when I already have a title shot. So go fight a legend in Jose Aldo. Go get him in my cap.

“Knock him out – just stay sharp and get ready for the winner of Figgy and Moreno in August or September, and then fight whoever wins out of Petr [Yan] and [Aljamain] Sterling towards the end of the year, maybe a December card. That’s my plan.”

It’s certainly not a bad plan. Whether it pans out that way remains to be seen, though.

Marlon Vera is not one to make excuses following his defeats.

Vera is coming off a unanimous decision defeat to Jose Aldo in their bantamweight clash at UFC Vegas 17 last month. Despite having his moments, he was largely outclassed by the former featherweight champion.

And for that, Vera blames nobody but himself.

“I believe, when you lose, there are a million things you can make up. You can make up a million excuses,” Vera told MMA Junkie. “I tried just to see the realistic (reasons) why I (lost) or what I could’ve done better. I believe coming into the third round, I was too excited. I was so sure I was about to finish him in a really spectacular way that I came in too heavy.

“… It’s my fault. There is no coach to blame. There are no teammates to blame. … I don’t want to erase this memory because that’s what’s going to get me through the next things. I’m going to use that chip on my shoulder to not overcommit or get too excited. I went for the kill and got stuck in a weird position. (Expletive) happens.”

Of course, one fighter who took pleasure in seeing Vera lose was Sean O’Malley.

O’Malley suffered his first professional defeat to Vera after a first-round TKO defeat in their UFC 252 co-headliner in August. However, “Sugar” — whose foot was injured during the bout — has since maintained that he’s still undefeated and has taken various shots at Vera who he believes won by a fluke.

O’Malley would also later claim he had no interest in a rematch with Vera either unless he went on a winning streak.

Vera, however, isn’t too bothered by O’Malley. And if he does end up facing him again, he believes it’ll just be a repeat of the first meeting.

“Everybody’s always got something to say,” Vera added. “What can we do about it? There’s nothing you can do about it. I won’t lose time arguing with a (expletive)(expletive). What I can do for sure is kick his ass – again. I’m not looking to fight nobody. I’m just looking to fight whoever the (expletive) UFC puts in front of me.”

Cody Garbrandt

Former UFC bantamweight champion Cody Garbrandt is willing to stick at 135lbs and fight Jose Aldo rather than wait for a shot at the flyweight title which Deiveson Figueiredo will look to defend for a third time against Brandon Moreno later this year.

Garbrandt snapped a three-fight losing streak last time out. ‘No Love’ scored a knockout of the year contender against Raphael Assuncao before announcing his move to 125lbs where he was granted an immediate title shot. Unfortunately, that title shot fell through when Garbrandt contracted COVID-19 and suffered long-term health issues linked to the virus.

Since then, Figueiredo has been busy. The Brazilian quickly beat Alex Perez at UFC 255 before going to war with Moreno over five rounds at UFC 256 a few weeks later. The fight was scored a draw and of course the promotion will now book a rematch between Figueiredo and Moreno.

A fully fit Garbradnt told TSN that rather than wait for the winner of Figueiredo vs. Moreno II, he will take another fight at bantamweight preferably against former featherweight king Aldo.

“I’m fully confident, I don’t cut weight to 35. I’ll have to diet to 25 but it still won’t be a drastic cut, it will be a healthy cut,” Garbradnt said. “Right now 143 pounds so I’m either gonna keep my weight low to go to the 25’s and wait and see or I’m gonna bulk up a little bit and fight Aldo so I feel good right here. I feel strong, feel fast.”

‘No Love’ is more confident than ever of beating Figueiredo when his flyweight title shot finally comes, especially after seeing Moreno cause the champ all kinds of trouble at UFC 256.

“Like you said, Figueiredo is a great match-up for me. He’s flat-footed, he throws single shots, he doesn’t like the wrestling,” Garbrandt said. “A lot of people don’t know my ground game in wrestling, I can put it on anybody in the world. There’s a lot of things which are variables in the fight that lean towards me. I have a supreme confidence, especially watching him get tagged up by Moreno’s jab.”

“I know my jab can snap people’s heads back and then obviously the other power shots put his lights out,” Garbrandt added. “He showed a lot of holes in his game, tough guy, went in there and had a good fight, back and forth but a lot of the guys have a lot of holes in the game and I felt like I’m just leveling up.” (Transcribed by Essentially Sports)

If Cody Garbrandt doesn’t get the next flyweight title shot, manager Ali Abdelaziz would like to see him fight Jose Aldo at bantamweight.

Garbrandt was initially expected to challenge current flyweight king Deiveson Figueiredo in the UFC 255 headliner last month. However, he had to pull out due to injury with Figueiredo instead defending his title against Alex Perez before going on to fight Brandon Moreno to a majority draw at UFC 256 earlier this month.

With the five-round contest being one of the greatest fights in UFC history in addition to the inconclusive result, a rematch is the natural next step to take.

Of course, that would leave Garbrandt out of the title picture. However, Abdelaziz has another idea for him back at bantamweight in Aldo.

“I’m interested in Cody Garbrandt vs. Jose Aldo at 135 pounds,” Abdelaziz told MMA Junkie. “If the flyweight champ is available, 100 percent Cody is the No. 1 contender. That’s what Dana White says. If he’s not available, everybody is booked or coming from losses.

“I think Cody needs a fight to get him up, and I think Jose Aldo is a fight to get him up. I think that’s a five-round fight, main event. Why not?”

It’s certainly a great fight and would make sense in the grand scheme of things.

Aldo earned his first win at bantamweight following an impressive unanimous decision victory over Marlon Vera at UFC Vegas 17 last weekend. As a result, he is now ranked No. 6 while Garbrandt is No. 3.

However, if a title shot was available in either division, it’s a different story for Abdelaziz.

“No disrespect to the champs at ’25 or ’35, Cody is the biggest name in these two divisions,” Abdelaziz said. “He’s one of the biggest stars in either division. For the divisions to grow, they need names like Cody. Cody brings in the superstar factor. Win or lose or draw, it’s good for everybody.

“A healthy, focused Cody Garbrandt is a very dangerous Cody Garbrandt. I think he can beat anybody on any given night, as long as he is healthy and focused, and I believe he matches up with the champ at 125 very well. I think he’ll knock him out. I think stylistically, Cody is a very bad matchup for Petr Yan, too. To be honest with you, I think Cody, he fights Aldo, he wins, he goes down and fights at ’25 and then comes back and try to be a double champ.

“Cody is still 27 years old. He’s young. We think of Cody Garbrandt as an old guy, but now he has Chris Holdsworth and Mark Henry working together. He has an amazing team, and Danny Castillo and all those guys, they are all cooperating. They brought somebody like Mark Henry in, and they put all their great minds together. I think great things can only come out of there.”

Do you agree with Abdelaziz?
